The fatal shootings of three police officers in Baton Rouge, Louisiana has pushed the number of cops killed by firearms so far this year to 31 ‒ a whopping 72 percent higher than the same period last year.

The surge in police fatalities, recorded by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, follows a particularly deadly month for law enforcement after the high profile killings of police officers in Dallas, Texas and Baton Rouge. Cops were also shot in Michigan, Georgia, Tennessee and Missouri in incidents that garnered less media attention.

A total 31 police officers have been killed by guns in the line of duty up thus far in 2016, compared to 18 during the same period in 2015, according to the statistics.

#BlackLivesMatter protests, which have reared up again following the recent high profile deaths of black men at the hands of US police, have found an echo in the UK following the death of Mzee Mohammed in Liverpool. Mohammed died earlier this month following his arrest by Merseyside Police, who booked him for "aggressive and erratic"behavior. Video footage released after his death revealed how Mohammed was held face down by several police officers while paramedics attended to the 18-year-old.

Mohammed's mother, Karla, said at a Liverpool protest in his honor: "I will not rest; I will walk in my son's shoes until I get answers, and anyone who had a hand in my boy's death will be brought to justice. "My son will not be a number or a statistic. His death will not be in vain."

Demonstrations have also taken place in London, where Black Lives Matter campaigners called for "Justice for Mzee" as they staged sit-ins, roadblocks and confrontations with police. In his memory, the new national executive council of the National Union of Students started its very first meeting with a minute of silence. According to the charity Inquest, Mzee Mohammed is the twenty-first black person to die in UK custody in the last six years. More than 140 black and other minority ethnic (BAME) people have died under police protection since 1990.

Rio's olympic airport: Havoc, congestion as security tightens

Rio airport
© www.zawya.comNew rules.
Airport staff in Rio de Janeiro's Santos Dumont had never seen anything like it. Just 18 days before the start of the Olympics, security lines were so long they snaked around the entire second floor of the terminal. The reason for the chaos at the city's picturesque domestic airport centered on new security guidelines starting Monday that require passengers to go through checks as though they were flying international. Travelers in Brazil are not usually required to remove coins, belts or separate laptops for domestic flights.

"I've never seen a line like this," said Claudia Regina, a staffer who's worked at the same airport jewelry store for 12 years. "People were complaining and were stressed about missing their flights."

While aviation agency Anac said the measures weren't connected to the Olympics, they were announced on Friday after a terror attack in Nice prompted Brazilian authorities to promise stricter security procedures during the games, which begin on Aug. 5. Andre Luis, a security official for airport operator Infraero at Santos Dumont, said he expected further delays on Monday evening when the number of flights out of the airport reaches its peak.

In an effort to ease congestion, passengers were handed clear plastic bags to separate their metallic objects while they waited in the lines. Luis said the security measures would be heaviest in Rio but would also affect passengers flying into the city from other parts of the country. He said airlines should have informed passengers to arrive at the airport earlier than usual. Peak hours are between 6 and 7 a.m. and 7 and 9 p.m.

Securing the airport is vital to the success of the games, with several delegations, including the British team, training outside of Rio. The early morning chaos follows a security scare last week when a pilot had to abort a landing when a group of pedestrians wandered onto the runway.

Comment: Rio: Welcome to the rest of the repressed world, changed for the worse by massive propaganda manipulations and fear mongering. Refreshing to hear you have managed to keep the security wolves from your door for so long.

Court documents reveal former head of Church of England covered-up sex assaults by pedophile bishop

Police should investigate former Archbishop of Canterbury Lord Carey of Clifton for misconduct, a lawyer for bishop Peter Ball's victims has urged, following the release of documents that suggest the head of the Church of England knew about the abuse allegations but failed to act.

Ball, now 84, was jailed last year for sexual assaults on eighteen teenagers between 1977 and 1992. The disgraced bishop was first cautioned for gross indecency with a teenage boy in 1993, but avoided trial and was allowed to continue working in schools and churches.

Sussex police documents, released under the Freedom of Information (FoI) Act last week, reveal that Lambeth Palace, the residence of the head of the Church, received six letters and a number of verbal reports detailing allegations of abuse shortly after the initial investigation into Ball in 1992.

In the letters, Ball is accused of encouraged victims to pray naked, perform sex acts in front of him and share his bed.

The files indicate the Church failed to pass this evidence on to police. In February 1993, Lord Carey wrote to the director of public prosecutions and a chief constable in support of Ball.

Comment: These latest revelations are par for the course, pedophiles in high places are always protected:

Footage has been posted online of a truck suicide bomb destroyed before it could do any damage by Iraqi fighters with a rocket propelled grenade.

The video was shot during the battle for Ramadi in Iraq, which is some 110km west of the capital, Baghdad. A truck belonging to Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) carrying explosives, was heading towards a government compound, presumably with the driver intending to blow it up to inflict maximum damage.

Iraqi forces had their men positioned to intercept the truck and just as it was getting a bit too close for comfort, a soldier armed with a rocket propelled grenade (RPG) took the vehicle out.

This footage captured the moment a man ran naked through a town square shouting 'praise to Allah'.

Three policemen tried to stop the streaker as he ran at full speed through a public space.

Bemused onlookers recorded the bizarre scene as others out for a stroll were stopped in their tracks as the man, then the cops, raced past them.

The 22-year-old man from Tunisia, who has not been named, was seen running in the nude around the Pratto della Valle Square in the city of Padua in northern Italy.

He was spotted by a passing police patrol and amused onlookers watched as a game of cat and mouse unfolded.

A teenage Afghan refugee armed with an axe and knife injured four people on a train in southern Germany before being shot dead by police, officials say.

Three people in a group from Hong Kong were seriously hurt and one slightly injured in the attack in Wurzburg. Another 14 were treated for shock.

Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann said the attacker was killed as he tried to flee the scene.

The motive for the attack is not yet clear.

The South China Morning Post said it was believed the four injured were a 62-year-old man, his 58-year-old wife, their daughter, 27, and her boyfriend, 31. The 17-year-old son travelling with them was not hurt, it said.

The millennial generation will be financially worse off than parents - first time in history

Millennials will be the first generation to earn less than their parents over their lifetime, according to new research, which projects a downward trend that could be compounded further by Brexit.

The study found millennials have been hit hardest by the recent pay squeeze, which actually began before the financial crash, but has been made worse by the economic downturn. Researchers at the Resolution Foundation, which studies inequality between generations, concluded that a "redistributive welfare state" is key and called on the government to renew the "intergenerational contract."

The report, titled 'Stagnation Generation: the case for renewing the intergenerational contract,' found evidence of a growing divide between a prosperous older generation and a struggling younger generation.

Police car in Daytona firebombed outside Islamic Center: Police Chief says small percentage "is trying to drive a wedge between all of us"

police car firebombed
The Daytona Beach Police Department may have been the target of anti-police backlash early Sunday morning when someone firebombed an unoccupied squad car parked in front of a mosque and left a note near the destroyed vehicle attributing the act to Black Lives Matter.

According to Police Chief Mike Chitwood, the incident took place about 2 a.m. That's when someone set fire to the cruiser parked outside the Islamic Center at 347 S. Keech St. The vehicle was engulfed in flames and destroyed.

Chitwood said police found a note at the scene that read "Black Lives Matter A. Sterling P. Castile (Expletive removed) the police."

It was not yet clear exactly what was used to burn the vehicle, but Chitwood said he assumes the culprits used a Molotov cocktail. He said the firebombing caused more than $20,000 in damage to the vehicle.

Comment: Good on Police Chief Mike Chitwood for actually questioning the source of the note and who's responsible for the firebombing. Whoever did this hoped to rile up the police and cause them, and others, to non-thinkingly react - which doesn't appear to be happening here. Chitwood also shows enough insight to say that there are radical elements that are trying to keep groups separated though he doesn't say what groups. If only we had a few thousand more Chitwoods in charge of police departments in the U.S. - instead of what we have now...

Cop body-slams, chokes child voicing concern over another child's violent arrest

police brutality

A video uploaded to Facebook this week shows multiple Hyattsville police officers involved in a violent arrest of what appears to be middle school children.

While it is unclear what started the altercation, the video does not lie.

As the video begins, an officer appears to be arresting a young white school child. The child seems compliant. However, the officer is seen dangerously twisting his arm.

When the adolescent bystanders see this unnecessary violence, they begin to voice their concern.

One young person becomes particularly concerned with the way the officer is treating the other child, so he quickly becomes the most outspoken. This outspokenness apparently enrages the responding officers.

As the officer, who appears to be a sergeant, walks up to the scene, he shoves the Hispanic student who was standing up for the white student. This assault seems to be entirely unprovoked.

Comment: The attack first mentality of police is in large part, a result of their training. "Serve and protect" is not part of the mandate any more.
