U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley celebrated a milestone of her tenure at the helm under President Donald Trump, but her accomplishment led to a lot of consternation from the other side of the aisle.

"Just 5 months into our time here, we've cut over half a billion $$$ from the UN peacekeeping budget & we're only getting started," she tweeted with a picture of herself smiling.

Seymour Hersh: Trump ignored own intel before bombing Syria airfield

In an exclusive interview, veteran investigative reporter Seymour Hersh discusses his new report that President Trump bombed a Syrian military airfield in April despite warnings that U.S. intelligence had found no evidence that the Assad regime used a chemical weapon.

Full Transcript:

AARON MATÉ: It's the Real News. I'm Aaron Maté. When the US bombed a Syrian military airfield in April, the White House said US intelligence had confirmed the Assad regime used chemical weapons in the town of Khan Shaykhun. Well a new report says the opposite is true. Veteran journalist Seymour Hersh reports US intelligence actually warned president Trump it had no evidence that the Syrian military had used sarin gas. Hersh writes that Russia had warned the U.S. about a Syrian military strike before Khan Shaykhun was bombed, and he says that bombing set off secondary explosions that released poisonous gases on the ground. Seymour Hersh's article, "Trump's Red Line," was published by the German newspaper [Die Welt]. Earlier he joined me to discuss it. Welcome Sy.

SEYMOUR HERSH: Hello.

AM: Thank you for joining us. You're reporting that Trump ordered the attack on the Syrian military airfield, despite US intelligence doubts that it was in fact Assad who had used chemical weapons in Idlib. Can you explain what that intelligence was?

US slams Damascus as OPCW says sarin used in April Syria attack, silent on blame

The US State Department is scolding the Syrian government, as the OPCW has reportedly determined that sarin, a banned nerve gas, was what killed dozens of Syrians in northern Idlib province on April 4.

Members of the UN's chemical weapons watchdog, the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), reviewed the fact-finding mission (FFM) report at The Hague, Netherlands, on Thursday, but it was not released to the public, Reuters reported.

The news outlet obtained a copy of the report that relied on eyewitness interviews and samples previously collected from the site of the alleged chemical attack in the town of Khan Sheikhoun. The FFM was reportedly unable to make it to the location in question because of security issues.
"A large number of people, some of whom died, were exposed to sarin or a sarin-like substance," the summary of the report said.

House may stall Senate's Russia sanctions bill even after technical issue resolved

New sanctions drawn up against Russia in the US Senate are no longer snagged by a technical matter, but the bill may still be in limbo, as it faces opposition in the House of Representatives.

On Thursday, the Senate fixed what's known as a "blue slip" violation in its bill to lay further sanctions on Russia. At issue was the constitutional requirement that revenue bills must originate in the House.

Democrats are accusing Republicans of stalling the sanctions in an attempt to please President Donald Trump after his administration officials raised concerns with the bill, according to Reuters.

Republicans in the House say that their reluctance to push the bill forward is purely procedural, Reuters reported.

German FM blasts US sanctions bill: 'Forcing us to give up Russian gas to sell own is unacceptable'

A US bill threatening to sanction European companies taking part in construction of a Russian pipeline is seen as unacceptable in Berlin, Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel said, especially if it actually aims to push America's own gas exports.
"We deem it absolutely unacceptable when a bill demands that Europeans give up on Russian gas so that they could sell American instead, at a much higher price," Gabriel said in Krasnodar, Russia, on Thursday as cited by Handelsblatt daily.
Gabriel was referring to new sanctions passed by the US Senate in mid-June. Initially outlined as an amendment to a bill imposing sanctions against Iran, the Russian part of the document threatens penalties for companies doing business with Russian oil and gas firms, possibly affecting the participation of BASF, Shell, Engie, OMV, Wintershall and Uniper in the Nord Stream 2 project.

Germany's biggest bank has rejected a request by US House Democrats to provide details of President Donald Trump's finances. Deutsche Bank is citing privacy laws.

The bank provided multimillion dollar loans to Trump's real-estate business before his political career.

"We respectfully disagree with the suggestion that Deutsche Bank freely may reveal confidential financial information in response to requests from individual members of Congress," Deutsche's counsel said in a letter seen by Reuters.

Why has Washington been at war for 16 years?

For sixteen years the US has been at war in the Middle East and North Africa, running up trillions of dollars in expenses, committing untold war crimes, and sending millions of war refugees to burden Europe, while simultaneously claiming that Washington cannot afford its Social Security and Medicare obligations or to fund a national health service like every civilized country has.

Considering the enormous social needs that cannot be met because of the massive cost of these orchestrated wars, one would think that the American people would be asking questions about the purpose of these wars. What is being achieved at such enormous costs? Domestic needs are neglected so that the military/security complex can grow fat on war profits.

The lack of curiosity on the part of the American people, the media, and Congress about the purpose of these wars, which have been proven to be based entirely on lies, is extraordinary. What explains this conspiracy of silence, this amazing disinterest in the squandering of money and lives?

WikiLeaks has published leaked documents purportedly from 'OutlawCountry', an alleged CIA program designed to overcome and alter firewalls on a Linux operating device.

An apparent user guide bearing the symbol of the US Central Intelligence Agency was published on the WikiLeaks website Thursday.

"OutlawCountry allows for the redirection of all outbound network traffic on the target computer to CIA-controlled machines for ex- and infiltration purposes," WikiLeaks said in a statement.

A type of malware, the virus targets a very specific version of the Linux operating system. "The target must be running a compatible 64-bit version of CentOS/RHEL 6.x (kernel version 2.6.32)," the program's user guide says.

Ukraine is to pay a hefty fine because of severe delays in the organization of the Eurovision Song Contest, as well as Kiev's decision to bar the Russian entrant from the competition.

The Ukrainian National Broadcasting Company has been notified of the fine, AFP reported, citing a representative of the EBU (European Broadcasting Union).

The Eurovision Song Contest in Kiev was marred by a row between Russia and Ukraine. Moscow boycotted the event after singer Yulia Samoylova, who was set to represent Russia, was denied entry due to a previous performance in Crimea. Russia's Channel One refused to broadcast Eurovision.

Qatar's Central Bank (QCB) said on Friday it would guarantee all exchange transactions for customers inside and outside the country without delay, dismissing media reports that some exchange companies have stopped buying the riyal.

"Qatari riyal's exchange rate is absolutely stable against the US dollar, and its exchangeability inside and outside Qatar is guaranteed at any time at the official price," QCB said as cited by Reuters.

According to the regulator, all banks and foreign exchange companies are committed to trading the riyal as usual, and the reports circulating across different media about the trading and exchange rate of the Qatari currency "are baseless."
