German media censors poll result showing 89% of Germans support Russian leader's stance regarding Ukraine

Image
A phone opinion poll conducted by the German TV channel N-TV has yielded a surprise finding that 89 percent of its viewers sympathize with Russian President Vladimir Putin's policy on Ukraine.

A poll on Russia's handling of the Ukraine crisis by the Berlin-based N-TV went spectacularly wrong in the channel's opinion, when the majority of its audience said "yes" to the question "Do you have understanding for Putin's policy?"

The response was indeed so baffling that the poll was wiped off the N-TV home page the same day, but not before some people managed to make screenshots of it, which they posted online.

A screenshot posted on the Facebook page of Christoph Hoerstel from Potsdam shows that 89 percent answered with a resounding "yes," with the remaining 11 percent responding with a "no." Respondents could choose only those two options.

Glorification of torture in US politics and culture making it 'acceptable' says Amnesty International (duh!)

Image
US soldiers torturing innocent Iraqis.
More than one-third of people around the globe - increasingly fortified by a fear of terrorism and glamorized by American TV shows - see justification for the use of torture, Amnesty International said on Tuesday.

Since 1984, 155 countries have signed up to the UN Convention against Torture. However, at least 79 of these countries still engage in torture, according to human rights group.

And since 'enhanced interrogation techniques', as the US military euphemistically calls the practice, generally occurs behind closed doors, the actual number of countries that engage in torture techniques is probably "higher still."

Comment: Torturing other human beings is how psychopaths get their "kicks". There is no better indication of just how pschopathologized the human race has become than when a large number of them support the torture of others in order to "protect their freedoms". It's pure psychopathic paramoralistic thinking: 'I support the brutalization of other human beings and the denial of their basic freedoms so that I can have my 'freedoms'.

The world seemed surprised to learn of the US practice of torture in Iraq.

But in fact, the US has been actively engaged in torture since at least the 1940s.

After the Second World War, the US not only imported hordes of military scientists - beginning with Werner von Braun who designed the US missile and space programs.

The US also imported and protected many condemned German and Japanese war criminals, especially those skilled in torture methods.

When the US overthrew the government in Iran in 1953 and installed the Shah, they also designed and installed his dreaded Savak Secret Police - which was especially famous for torture.
According to researchers, not only did the US design this secret police and torture regime, they actually managed it on a daily basis, down to the selection and running of agents.

The CIA in the Philippines and Indonesia developed a massive 1000-page torture manual based on direct experimentation that was subsequently distributed for decades to all their dictator-puppets in Central and South America.

It was until at least well into the 1980s that the US CIA was distributing its euphemistically-titled "Human Resource Exploitation Training Manual - 1983", teaching its dictators all the fine points of how to torture their own people.

And it was in Central and South America that the CIA participated so actively in the training of torture methods, even bringing many "students" to the US to study and practice, so the US could export the savage brutality to its colonies.

The US actively taught, and supported, torture as a means of civilian control, including the numerous CIA-sponsored "death squads" in Central America. None of this is a secret any longer.

Turkey refuses to pay Cyprus invasion damages despite court ruling

Turkey has announced that it has no plans to pay 90 million euros ($124 million) to Cyprus as ordered by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in compensation for its invasion of the island 40 years ago.

On Tuesday, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said his country sees no obligation to pay the compensation to a country that it does not formally recognize.
"In terms of the grounds of this ruling, its method and the fact that it is considering a country that Turkey does not recognize as a counterpart, we see no necessity to make this payment," Davutoglu commented.
"Yesterday's ECHR ruling consists of some legal contradictions and therefore we don't see it as at all binding, in terms of payment," he said.

The youngest son of U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, Hunter Biden, has been appointed head of legal affairs at Ukraine's largest private gas producer - a move he said would benefit Ukrainians and the country's economy.

In a statement published on its website, Burisma Holdings announced Hunter Biden would join its board of directors and head the company's legal unit.

"As a new member of the board, I believe that my assistance in consulting the company on matters of transparency, corporate governance and responsibility, international expansion and other priorities will contribute to the economy and benefit the people of Ukraine," Hunter Biden said in the statement.

Burisma owns several Ukrainian oil and gas companies, including Esko Pivnich and Pari, Lenta.ru reported Tuesday. The company also has assets in Ukraine's Dnepr-Donetsk, the Carpathian and the Azov-Kuvan basins.

Boko Haram: U.S AFRICOM'S latest False Flag franchise

Who are 'Boko Haram', and what are they up to in Nigeria?

Nigeria's premier terror circus conveniently grabbed the headlines away from an embattled White House this week (simmering scandals, Behghazi, and IRS), just in the nick of time, pulling off the terror caper of the year. Without booking any coaches, a relatively small group of Boko Harem operatives managed to kidnap up to 300 young girls from a secondary school in Chibok in remote northeastern Nigeria... on April 14th.

If this was indeed a real kidnapping even, the response time is pretty pathetic - nearly one month? Barack and Michelle Obama were a bit slow on the uptake of this story, not least of all because Washington has been very busy indeed - ginning-up war with Russia, shipping weapons to Islamic extremists in Syria, various and sundry coups and destablisation plans around the globe, and last but not least, pretending to care about the missing airliner Flight MH370. Not worry, the FBI have been sent to Nigeria to take control of the crime scene - which may, or may not be good news for Nigerians. If the FBI were really there to figure out what happened, then they should dig into this: for some unknown reason up until a few months ago, the White House was trying to keep Boko Haram off the State Dept's Official Designated Terror List, and there's probably a very good reason for that...

Gazprom sends Ukraine $1.66bn bill

Gazprom has sent Ukraine's Naftogaz a $1.66 billion bill for June, which Kiev must pay by June 2, or risk a halt in natural gas supplies on June 3.

Russia's largest state-owned natural gas producer sent the bill on Tuesday, Gazprom spokesman Sergey Kupriyanov said, as reported by ITAR-TASS. Kupriyanov said the switch to prepayment was in line with a 2009 contract.

President Dmitry Medvedev will hold a press conference on June 3.

Naftogaz, Ukraine's state oil and gas company "must pay this bill by June 2, and starting June 3, the company will only receive gas supplies that have been paid for," Kupriyanov said.

A supply rupture will not only hurt Ukraine, but also the rest of Europe, which receives up to 50 percent of its gas via Ukraine. Much of Europe is dependent on Russian gas, which supplies about 30 percent of energy needs. Bulgaria and the Czech Republic both import 100 percent of their natural gas from Russia, which passes through Ukraine.

Ukrainian government officials signed a memorandum in Brussels today, which will make โ‚ฌ1.6 billion in macroeconomic loans available in Ukraine. The loans will be provided to Ukraine's National Bank over the next 15 years.

"Our meeting was a very successful one. It was unprecedented. I think we can say there was a great convergence," Jose Barroso, the European Commission President said.

The EU will soon disburse the first tranche of a combined โ‚ฌ1.61 billion ($ 2.2 billion) Macro Financial Assistance (MFA) loan program, but specific dates were not given.

Ukraine and the European Commission also signed a Financing Agreement for a State Building Contract that is worth โ‚ฌ355 million and is intended to help the country's economic transition. Another โ‚ฌ10 million will be available for civil society, according to the European Comissions's statement on its website.

US starts countrywide nuclear drill

The US Strategic Command, the agency responsible for country's nuclear arsenal, will hold large-scale war games this week that will include 10 B-52 Stratofortresses and up to six B-2 Spirit bombers, along with other military and government agencies.

The Boeing B-52 Stratofortress is a long-range, subsonic, jet-powered strategic bomber built to carry nuclear weapons.

The Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit, also known as the Stealth Bomber, is an American strategic bomber, designed for penetrating dense anti-aircraft defenses that can drop up to sixteen 1,100 kg B83 nuclear bombs.

Comment: Interestingly synchronous timing for these provocative "flexings of muscle," reminders that there are deadly serious consequences to pushing the tipping point. One bomber, 16 nuclear warheads...could be that simple.

People's governor of Ukraine's Luhansk region Valery Bolotov has been attacked. Bolotov has a gunshot wound, representative of the press center of Luhansk People's Republic Vasily Nikitin told ITAR-TASS on Tuesday.

Valery Bolotov has survived an assassination attempt, Vasily Nikitin added. "He has a gunshot wound," Nikitin said, "Bolotov is in hospital now; his life is not in danger."

The governor was attacked around 11:00, local time (4 pm GMT). It was a light injury, the press center representative added.

Gennady Kernes, 54, was badly wounded in the back in an assassination attempt on April 28. The attempt occurred when he was jogging along a highway in Kharkov. Overnight to April 29, he was taken to a private hospital in Israel's Haifa. Later, he was taken to the Haifa-based Rambam medical centre, where he was operated. Ukrainian presidency candidate Mikhail Dobkin said the person who made an attempt on the life of Kharkiv Mayor Gennady Kernes, shot to kill him. The attacker was shooting in the heart, said Dobkin, who is a close friend of Kernes, the mayor of a large Russian-speaking eastern Ukrainian city.

Western news blackout: The U.S. media ignores Putin's peace plan

War media

"Let me repeat again, that in Russia's view, the blame for the crisis in Ukraine lies with those who organized the coup d'etat in Kiev on February 22-23... But whatever the case, we must look for a way to solve the situation as it is today....And, as I said, what is needed is direct, full-fledged and equal dialogue between the Kiev authorities and the representatives of people in southeast Ukraine....I don't know whether a Geneva-2 round of talks.. is realistic. (But) I believe that if we want to find a long-term solution to the crisis, there must be an open, honest and equal dialogue . That is our only option."

-Russian President Vladimir Putin, press statement, OCSE meeting, Moscow, May 7, 2014

So many lie beneath the eternal granite
But of those honored by this stone
Let no one be forgotten
Let nothing be forgotten.

-Olga Berggolts, "Leningrad"
On Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin made a proposal for ending the violence in Ukraine at an OCSE (Organization for the Cooperation and Security in Europe) in Moscow. Unfortunately, most Americans never heard what he had to say because the media failed to publish his statement. The reason for the omission is fairly obvious, the media doesn't want people to know that Putin is not the ghoulish, authoritarian caricature he's portrayed to be, but a levelheaded pragmatist who wants a swift and peaceful resolution to the crisis. Here is what he said:
"We think the most important thing now is to launch direct dialogue, genuine, full-fledged dialogue between the Kiev authorities and representatives of southeast Ukraine. This dialogue could give people from southeast Ukraine the chance to see that their lawful rights in Ukraine really will be guaranteed."
