California judge blocks retail warning about cell phone radiation's harm to children

A federal judge upheld Berkeley's authority Monday to require cell phone retailers to tell customers that carrying switched-on phones too close to their bodies might exceed federal radiation-exposure standards, but barred a warning that "this potential risk is greater for children."

The language on children is not based on federal safety guidelines or any scientific consensus on the effects of cell phone radiation, said U.S. District Judge Edward Chen of San Francisco. Whether children are at greater risk than adults is "a matter of scientific debate," he said, and Berkeley's requirement of such a warning would probably conflict with federal regulation of cell phones.

By contrast, Chen said, Berkeley relied on the Federal Communications Commission's research and guidelines for the rest of its ordinance. It requires sellers to tell customers that the federal government sets radiation exposure guidelines for cell phones, but that a user may be exposed to higher levels by carrying the device in a pocket or tucked into a bra when it's connected to a wireless network.

Chen noted that the commission requires cell phone manufacturers to advise customers in product manuals to keep the devices a certain distance from their bodies. "There is a reasonable scientific basis to believe that (radio-frequency radiation emissions) at some levels can and do present health risks," the judge said.

Pure evil: Psychopathic IDF soldier shoots Palestinian youth with sniper rifle (graphic video)

Image

The video shows an Israeli soldier aiming a .22 sniper rifle at a Palestinian after the youth has thrown two stones. The moment the shot is fired, the Palestinian is standing still, leaning against a wall and clearly no conceivable threat to anyone. He is hit by the snipers round and falls to the ground.

The post has been shared more than 3,000 times on israeli media and hundreds of comments express sadistic joy at the sight of soldiers shooting a Palestinian who has no rights because he lives under military rule. A common complaint expressed by Israeli commenters is that the youth was not shot in the head or heart and killed outright.

Need more carnage: U.S. military proposes beefing up anti-ISIS Syrian rebels

Image
U.S. Gen. Lloyd Austin
U.S. military commanders have proposed a program to provide arms and ammunition to a coalition of up to 5,000 anti-ISIS Syrian rebels now operating in northern Syria.

The group, which is loosely referred to as the Syrian Arab Coalition, has had battlefield successes in recent weeks against ISIS at the very time the U.S. has been struggling to figure out what to do with its own program to train other moderate Syrian rebels and to put them on the battlefield.

U.S. commanders now feel that supporting this coalition will be crucial to success in northern Syria, according to a U.S. official who is not authorized to speak publicly about ongoing military operations.

Best of the Web: As Assad pounds ISIS targets, US must rethink Syria strategy

Image
Earlier this week, Bashar al-Assad served notice to ISIS that the tide may have just turned in the battle for Syria. The Kremlin's move to increase its "logistical" and "technical" support for government forces at Latakia appears to have breathed new life into the regime which carried out a series of air raids in the de facto ISIS capital Raqqa on Thursday.

This came amid reports that Assad's forces were using new "highly effective and very accurate" weaponry. "There are modern weapons that the regime didn't previously have, be they rocket launchers or air to ground to missiles," The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights told Reuters.

Needless to say, Russia's move to bolster Assad and the suggestion by Syrian foreign minister Walid al-Moualem that Damascus may soon formally request Russian ground troops for the fight has alarmed Washington which, until now, was content to bide its time until Assad finally fell before swooping in to "liberate" the country from whatever militia managed to prevail. As we outlined on Friday, that option is now officially off the table, as toppling Assad will now mean ISIS, al-Nusra, YPG, and the various and sundry other groups operating throughout the country will need to first defeat Russia, an exceptionally unlikely outcome and one that the Pentagon certainly cannot afford to wait out. With its back against the wall in terms of explaining to the public why it seems more and more like the US would rather allow ISIS to continue to operate rather than ally with Russia and Assad to defeat them, Obama and Kerry folded on Friday, instructing Defense Secretary Ashton Carter to phone his Russian counterpart to begin coordinating anti-terror activities in Syria. Media pile-on: Everyone's kicking AIPAC now that it's down

Image
Here's a media trend just about everyone can applaud. Mainstream outlets are publishing stories about the defeat of AIPAC, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, on the Iran Deal. The pieces are likely to cut AIPAC's power even more.

National Public Radio did the story last week. So did Bloomberg News. You've rarely seen such frank descriptions of AIPAC's power as offered in the Bloomberg piece. The very first paragraph cites Illinois Senator Dick Durbin's dis to AIPAC in order to support the Iran deal:
Richard Durbin... owes his political career to Aipac. In 1982, Aipac members supported Durbin, then an obscure college professor, against Paul Findley's campaign for reelection to the House as retribution for Findley's outspoken advocacy on behalf of the Palestine Liberation Organization
Paul Findley has many times told this story; I've rarely seen it picked up by the mainstream media.

Drug charges dropped against prostitute lovin' coke-head Lord Sewel

Scandal-hit Lord Sewel will not face charges over drug-related offences due to a lack of evidence, despite being caught on film committing the alleged felonies in a press sting.

London's Metropolitan Police said in a statement on Tuesday they had closed their criminal investigation into the Labour peer.

Sewel resigned from his ยฃ84,500 per year post in the House of Lords in July after the Sun published undercover photographs and video footage allegedly showing the peer snorting cocaine in the company of prostitutes.

Police raided Sewel's home in central London during their investigation, but did not find any evidence to support the allegations.

"The Met launched a criminal inquiry into allegations of drug-related offences involving a member of the House of Lords on Monday, 27 July," Scotland Yard said in a statement.

"The investigation, led by officers from the Special Enquiry Team of the Homicide and Major Crime Command, has now concluded.

"Following a review of all the material, including a forensic examination of an address in central London, there is insufficient evidence to proceed with this investigation and the matter is now closed," the Met added.

Lord Ashcroft could be dismissed over Cameron's pig & drug allegations - bio written as revenge?

Lord Ashcroft, author of the unauthorized David Cameron biography, could be dismissed as a government aide after criticizing the Prime Minister's "ineptitude" in failing to carry out a coherent foreign policy on Libya and Syria.

The peer has been accused of using the book as "revenge" against Cameron after he failed to secure a top job in government following the 2010 general election.

Call me Dave, Ashcroft's biography which is being serialized by the Daily Mail, further exposed allegations of the PM's decadent behavior during his undergraduate studies at Oxford University.

Sources suggested on Monday that Ashcroft's position as Cameron's "special representative for veterans' transition" would not be reviewed.

The second installment of the book, released on Tuesday, included damning reports of Cameron's military knowledge and leadership.

General Sir David Richards said he was forced to tell Cameron that "being in the Combined Cadet Force at Eton" did not mean he was able to rule on military tactics, the book reveals.

Monday's extract alleged Cameron had "put a private part of his anatomy" into a dead pig's mouth. It further alleged that friends of David and his wife Samantha had taken cocaine around their dinner table, and that the Prime Minister had been partial to smoking cannabis.

However, the peer and his co-author Isabel Oakeshott have come under scrutiny after it emerged they had not been able to verify the pig's head allegation. "We couldn't get to the bottom of that source's allegation, so we merely reported the account that the source gave us," Oakeshott told Channel 4 News.

She added the pig story was only a few paragraphs long and that the authors "don't say whether we think it's true."

SOTT Focus: The Atlantic Council, Western media, and the 'Big Lie' about Putin's Russia

Image
Jeezus guys, could your resentments, biases and deep-seated hatred for this man be any more obvious?!
Russia invaded Ukraine and annexed Crimea. Russia shot down MH17. Russia is planning to invade the Baltics. Russia is behind the Syrian refugee crisis. Day after day, the media churns out lie after lie from the bizarro realm of unreality in which so-called 'think tanks' exist. Their utterly schizoidal insistence that everyone adopt their paranoid anti-Russian stance means that as soon as you've countered one set of lies, a new set is already making the rounds.

One such screed in Newsweek recently, 'Putin's Big Lie Turns Reality on Its Head', written by Adrian Karatnycky, was reproduced from the Atlantic Council, an institution that is up there with the Brookings Institute in terms of a blood-soaked legacy from making the world safe for democracy American hegemony.

Karatnycky, a Ukrainian, is a 'Senior Fellow' following a decade as President of Freedom House, a CIA front, and another 'think tank' that has been instrumental in 'exporting democracy' - to American standards, of course.

Karatnycky's article begins:
Each summer, as part of ongoing efforts to influence their young, Russia's government leaders and propagandists head to a conference center on the Klyazma River about 130 miles northeast of Moscow to address the "Terra Scientia" Russian Youth Education Conference.

Despite its lofty name, the conference bears little trace of free inquiry. Over the course of six weeklong shifts - each with around 1,000 participants representing a different sphere of endeavor - Russia's most politically reliable youth leaders are introduced to a steady stream of ideas, messages and talking points to be used over the course of the year in civic and educational work.

Deluded: Poroshenko thinks Crimea blockade will convince Crimeans to come back to Ukraine

Image
Petro Poroshenko commented on the actions of the activists who blocked the roads near the Ukrainian border crossings and are not letting the trucks into Crimea. He believes that the blockade will change the attitude of the inhabitants of the peninsula towards Ukraine and they will come back "under the wing" of Kiev.

"The blockade is the action of the activists of the Crimean Tatar people, and public services - Ukrainian border guards and Interior Ministry - were ordered to ensure law and order and the absence of provocations during the protest", - he said at a joint briefing with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at the Yavorovsky polygon in the Lvov region.

According to the Ukrainian leader, the purpose of this action is what he said in an interview with Ukrainian TV channels on Sunday, September 20: Ukraine will do everything for the quick resumption of state sovereignty over Crimea.

Putin and Netanyahu agree to 'more honest' exchange of information on Syria

Russia's president and Israeli's PM have agreed to "establish a channel for information exchange" with regard to the current situation in war-torn Syria, a Kremlin spokesman said on Tuesday, commenting on the Netanyahu's visit to Moscow.

The two leaders discussed the need for a "more honest information exchange and coordination between Russia and Israel" in their actions in Syria, Vladimir Putin's press secretary Dmitry Peskov said, adding that the agreement had been prompted by the worsening situation there.

"Based on the partnership relations between Russia and Israel it has been considered appropriate to establish channels of informational exchange on such a sensitive issue," Peskov told journalists, adding that this coordination has become necessary because of the difficult situation in the region, and has nothing to do with Russian military advisers in Syria.
