Buenos Aires flooding update: 3 dead and over 5,000 evacuated, 5 inches of rain in 24 hours

In a Government House press conference earlier today, Argentina Cabinet Chief, Jorge Capitanich, said that the heavy rainfall and flooding that struck in the Province of Buenos Aires last Saturday has now affected 19 municipalities and forced 5,203 people to evacuate from their homes.

He said that the districts affected were Luján, Marcos Paz, La Matanza, Bragado, Arrecifes, Pilar, Mercedes, San Miguel, Esteban Echeverría, Ensenada, Carmen de Areco, San Martín, Lomas de Zamora, Moreno, San Fernando, Tigre, Quilmes, Salto and Baradero. Currently there is no available information for flood damage in Berisso, Malvinas Argentinas, Campana and Exaltación de la Cruz. The floods first began on 30 October 2014, forcing over 1,000 from their homes.

Some fifteen departments in south eastern France were on alert on Tuesday as storms swept through the region. Residents in the Ardeche were some of the hardest hit as rivers burst their banks.

Gale force winds and heavy rain lashed south eastern France on Tuesday leaving weather alerts in place for 15 departments.

On Monday night the severe weather caused havoc in the Ardeche department and left over 6,000 homes without power. Firefighters were called out nearly 100 times to deal with incidents.

"We have an enormous amount of damage, with walls collapsing onto roads," said deputy mayor of an Ardeche village Michel Aymard, who said it was the third time in two months the region had been hit by devastating floods.

Flooding in Democratic Republic of Congo leaves at least 30 dead

At least 30 people have been killed by recent flooding and landslides in the Democratic Republic of Congo with many more thought to be still missing.

The disaster struck in Kalehe Territory in South Kivu province after 3 days of heavy rain. The village of Bushushu is said to be the worst hit. Local media say that other villages in the area, including Rambira, Nyambasha and Nyamukubi have also been badly affected.

With so many still missing, there are fears that the floods and landslides may have killed over 100 people. Bodies are buried under landslide rubble or have been swept away on flood torrents, possibly as far as Lake Kivu, where local fishermen are assisting with the search. Hundreds of homes and other buildings, as well as bridges and roads in and around the village have been damaged or destroyed by flood or landslides.

1,500 evacuated due to flooding in Buenos Aires

A cold front moving northward across Argentina, Uruguay and southern Brazil has triggered thunderstorms, strong winds and heavy rain over the last few days. Flooding in Buenos Aires province in Argentina has forced over 1,500 people to evacuate their homes. Storms have also caused power outages and damage to property.

In Buenos Aires Province, areas worst affected by the flooding so far include La Matanza (part of Greater Buenos Aires city) where over 1,000 have been evacuated, and the city of Pilar, where 200 have evacuated. For a full list of affected areas, see the list here.

Hundreds evacuated after major floods hit western Norway

After 2 days of heavy rainfall, parts of western Norway suffered major flooding after rivers overflowed in the counties of Sogn og Fjordane and Hordaland late on Tuesday 28 October 2014. Heavy rain has also continued to affect parts of Rogaland county.

Initial reports suggest that Odda and Voss in Hordaland and Flåm, Laerdal, Årdal and Stryn in Sogn og Fjordane have been the worst affected.

The heavy rainfall has also led to avalanches in some areas of western Norway.

Miners trapped by flooding in coal mine, Turkey

Nineteen workers stuck and 25 saved after water builds up and courses into areas occupied by staff

Nineteen miners have become trapped in a coal mine in southern Turkey which collapsed following a flood, local media reported.

Rescue teams and medics were sent to the mine in the town of Ermenek, in Karaman province - about 70 miles (110km) north of Turkey's Mediterranean coastline.

Media reports said the collapse on Tuesday occurred after water that had built up inside the mine coursed into areas where the workers had been located.

"The water accumulated underground [and] has flooded into the gallery. According to initial reports, 25 workers have been saved while 19 workers remain trapped," Karaman governor Murat Koca was quoted as saying by Turkey's Dogan news agency.

Athens and Antalya inundated as floods hit Southern Europe

After the storm surge in northern Europe, then flooding and storms in Slovenia, Czech Republic and parts of the Balkans, the severe weather thought to be caused by the remnants of Hurricane Gonzalez, moved to parts of southern Europe on Friday 24 October 2014.

Athens, Greece

Athens in Greece was left knee-deep in water after torrential rain caused flooding in central and western parts of the city. Local media say as much as 14 cm of rain fell in just 90 minutes on Friday. Emergency services received over 600 calls as hundreds of homes and businesses were inundated. The worst affected areas were Peristeri, Ilion, Perama, Menidi, Aegaleo, Aghioi Anargoiroi, Nikaia, Piraeus and Kamatero.

UK and Germany experience storm surge flooding after Hurricane Gonzalo

Hurricane Gonzalo, or at least what is left of it, has caused storm surges and coastal flooding in parts of northern Europe over the last few days.

Gonzalo has left a trail of destruction behind from Bermuda to Canada and on to UK and other parts of northern Europe, including Ireland, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany and Denmark.

On Monday 20 October, Gonzalo hit Ireland and the United Kingdom with winds of 159 kph (99 mph) was reported on the Isle of Wight, according to the BBC. Around 600,000 homes were left without power at one point. Three people have been killed in the storm (1 in UK and 2 in France), and several others left injured.

5 hours of record rainfall as Palm Beach County floods again in Florida

Record levels of rain have once again inundated areas of south east Florida. Parts of Palm Beach county were badly affected, in particular the city of West Palm Beach where roads were blocked and several cars stranded in the flood water.

National Weather Service recorded the following rainfall levels:

Port of Palm Beach - 9.13 inches (230 mm)

Palm Beach - 8.21 inches (208 mm)

Riviera Beach - 5.49 (140 mm)

Lake Worth - 3.32 (84 mm)

Palm Beach Airport - 2.64 (67 mm)

Deadly flash floods hit Tenerife - 5 and a half inches of rain in just 24 hours

At least one person has died in flash flooding that struck on the tourist island of Tenerife. Some local media reports claim that at as many as 5 people have died in flooding in the Canary Islands between 19 and 20 October 2014.

Streets were turned to rivers as the eye of a storm passed over Tenerife and La Gomera islands, dumping 140 mm of rain on the Santa Cruz area of Tenerife in just 24 hours. Cars were submerged and tarmac ripped up from roads as raging flood water swept through the streets. Over 4,000 homes were left without power during the peak of the storm.
