Costa Rican Officials: A Strong Earthquake Could Still Occur in Guanacaste

Experts confirmed the Sept. 5 magnitude-7.6 earthquake was the 'Big One' they've been expecting, but the fault rupture was only of 50 percent.

After a series of analyses conducted in the northwestern province of Guanacaste, experts from the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (Ovsicori) reported Tuesday that another quake of equal or greater magnitude could occur in Nicoya Peninsula, but predicting when it would happen is "impossible ."

Marino Protti, Ovsicori's lead scientist, explained that the magintude-7.6 earthquake on Sept. 5 caused a 40 percent slip and an inclination of 1.8 meters on the fault located in Nicoya.

He also said that although the quake was the "big one" experts had been expecting for Guanacaste, the fault ruptured by only 50 percent, meaning that the possibility that another earthquake of equal or greater magnitude in the area still remains.

Ovsicori's report, released Tuesday, also stated that the earthquake triggered the activation of three faults in Aguas Zarcas (in the northern region), the Guanacaste Volcanic Area and Irazú Volcano (north of Cartago). Seismologists will continue monitoring the areas.

By Tuesday morning, the total count of aftershocks from the recent earthquake was 1,650. On Sept. 5 at 8:42 a.m., the 7.6-magnitude earthquake shook the country and was felt as far away as Nicaraguan and Panama. Its epicenter was located 20 kilometers northwest of Sámara in the Nicoya Península.

More tremors at Song Tranh hydro-power plant

VietNamNet Bridge - In the morning of September 6, thousands of residents of Bac Tra My district, Quang Nam province, panicked because of four consecutive quakes up to 3.4 on the Richter scale. In the last four days, this region suffered from 12 quakes.

While attending a ceremony to see recruits off, many officials of Bac Tra My district heard big explosions in the earth and fell tremors. "After the explosion, the ground shook and my car was also shaken," said Ms. Dung, a district official. Mr. Tran Van Anh in Phuoc Hiep commune, Phuoc Son district, where is very close to Song Tranh 2 hydro-power plant, said: "At 7.20am, when I was drinking tea with my neighbors, an underground blast exploded. After that the ground shook strongly. We had to run out of the house immediately."

In Hiep Duc and Nam Tra My districts, hundreds of people fled from their houses because of underground blasts and tremors in the early morning. The Geo-physic Institute verified that four quakes occurred near the Song Tranh 2 plant in the morning of September 6. The strongest tremor is 3.4 Richter and its epicenter was in Phuoc Hiep commune, which is very close to Song Tranh 2.

According to the institute's statistics, up to 58 tremors were recorded around Song Tranh 2 plant over the last year. From September 3-6, up to 12 quakes occurred. The strongest tremor was 4.2 Richter. Tremors may come from the Tra Bong or Hung Nhuong-Ta Vi faults, around 3km from Song Tranh 2 dam.

Rescuers Told to Keep at It after China Earthquake Kills 80

Guohui, China - Rescuers in southwestern China tried on Saturday to reach remote communities rocked by earthquakes that killed at least 80 people and damaged thousands of buildings, state media reported.

Shallow 5.6 magnitude quakes struck an impoverished, mountainous part of the country with poor infrastructure and communications on Friday and the death toll could rise as news trickles in from cut-off areas, the Xinhua news agency said.

The quakes cut off electricity and triggered landslides that blocked roads, hampering rescue efforts. Adding to rescuers' difficulties was rain which forecasters said was expected for the next three days.

"I was extremely scared when it started to shake. After it shook the first, second and third times, it was moving and I was extremely scared," said 56-year-old Zhou Weiping, a resident of the township of Guohui in Yiliang county, near the epicenter.

"We panicked and quickly ran out," she said

State television showed crumbled walls and roads strewn with rubble and rocks. The broadcaster put the death toll at 89 earlier in the day, but later revised it to "at least 80", in line with the official Xinhua news agency's tally.

More than 800 people were injured, Xinhua said.

Earthquake shakes Beverly Hills for second time in a week

The second Beverly Hills earthquake in a week caused no reported damage, but it did prompt worried calls to the front desk from guests at the deluxe Montage Beverly Hills hotel. "Do we need to evacuate?" they asked. "We do get guest calls as soon as they happen," said Andrew Tredici, overnight supervisor. Tredici said hotel staff could easily distinguish locals or others accustomed to tremors from East Coast and foreign guests for whom the earth movements were a more startling experience.

Two earthquakes centered near Beverly Hills have struck this week. A magnitude 3.5 earthquake was reported at 12:03 a.m. Friday. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the epicenter was one mile from Century City, two miles from West Hollywood, nine miles from Inglewood and nine miles from the Los Angeles Civic Center.

A magnitude 3.2 temblor hit Beverly Hills on Monday. That quake set off some security alarms but caused no damage.

Tredici said the smaller earthquakes are manageable. On Monday, he said, "A couple of things fell down in the gift shop." Even though Friday morning's quake was stronger, the hotel found no evidence of damage or spills. Still, said Tredici, who recently relocated to the Los Angeles area from Arizona: "We don't want a 5.5 or, God forbid, an 8."

Back-to-back earthquakes shake central California

Two earthquakes struck in Huron, Calif., Friday, registering magnitudes of 4.2 and 4.0, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The first earthquake hit at 6:22 a.m. PT. One minute later, the 4.2 earthquake was reported.

According to the USGS, the epicenter was eight miles from Avenal, Calif., nine miles from Kettleman City, Calif., 17 miles from Coalinga, Calif., and 132 miles from San Jose. Huron, Calif., is about 50 miles south of Fresno.

About six hours earlier, a magnitude 3.5 earthquake struck Beverly Hills. Thousands of people reported feeling it, the Associated Press reported.

A spokesman from the USGS told NBC News the earthquakes caused no reported damage.

Seismologists say the quakes are not on the San Andreas Fault and weren't triggered by a magnitude-7.6 earthquake in Costa Rica, according to the Associated Press.

More than 500 aftershocks rattle Costa Rica

More than 500 aftershocks, including one as strong as 5.1 on the Richter scale, continued to rattle Costa Rica one day after a 7.6-magnitude quake jolted northwest Guanacaste province early Wednesday. According to the latest report from Costa Rica's Volcano and Earthquake Watch (Ovsicori), issued at 7:30 am local time (1330 GMT) Thursday, some 530 aftershocks stronger than 2 on the Richter scale have been registered, with the strongest occurring before dawn on Thursday, at 3:07 am (0907 GMT).

The epicenter of the 5.1 quake was also located in Guanacaste, 151 kilometers west of the capital San Jose, and 14 kilometers beneath the earth's surface, seismic experts said. Aftershocks as strong as 6 on the Richter scale are normal as shifting tectonic plates release energy following an earthquake of major magnitude, like the quake on Wednesday, said the experts.

Costa Rica's Earthquake and Volcano Observatory counted 530 aftershocks by 13:30 GMT Thursday, including one with a magnitude of 5.1 and three others above 4, after the 7.6-magnitude quake that affected the country on Wednesday.
