Tornadoes touched down in Texas and Louisiana as a powerful storm system that dumped heavy snow in California moved eastward Thursday, knocking out power to more than 150,000 customers and forcing the cancellation of hundreds of flights into and out of Dallas.

Tornado warnings issued for Dallas, Fort Worth and surrounding areas of Texas expired by late afternoon but strong winds and hail continued, according to the National Weather Service.

About 100 miles east of Dallas, a twister that hit the ground near the small town of Fouke moved northeast toward Texarkana at 55 mph, the weather service said.

The NWS Storm Prediction Center reported that a severe thunderstorm watch was in effect through midnight Thursday for parts of southeast Texas, including Houston and College Station.

Rare heavy snow falls on Maunakea, Hawaii - 10 feet snowdrifts

nnnn
Dennis Patterson's job at the W.M. Keck Observatory atop 13,803-foot Maunakea primarily focuses on caring for and maintaining the observatory's cameras and spectrometers. But the recent winter weather has given him another purpose during his four days a week at the summit: shoveling snow.

The Big Island was drenched with rain by two Kona Lows in the middle of February. But at the high elevations, the storms also produced more than a foot of snow, including 10-foot drifts in some places on Maunakea.

"I was still shoveling up there Saturday," said Patterson, who is used to the white stuff having lived in Colorado and Utah. "This last storm was pretty epic. We still haven't been able to open the domes for the last 12 or 13 nights due to ice and snow buildup."

A dead humpback whale spotted off the Garden State coast was the second to be seen in the tri-state area on Wednesday.

The Marine Mammal Stranding Center is continuing to monitor the latest whale spotted off the coast of Seaside Park.

A necropsy is expected to be performed.

The initial discovery occurred on the same day that another whale washed onto a jetty in Breezy Point, New York.

While scientists continue to say there are no connections to the surveying taking place on the planned offshore wind farms and these deaths, there have been continued calls for a pause by mayors, activists and even state congressional representatives.
