"Every meter" Kiev's forces seize from Russian troops is "paving" Ukraine's way into the bloc, Germany's foreign minister has said

Ukraine's future "lies in" the European Union, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said on Monday, adding that the bloc would soon incorporate regions that had joined Russia in 2022 but are still claimed by Kiev.

"[The EU] will soon stretch from Lisbon to Lugansk," Baerbock told journalists on the sidelines of the EU foreign ministers' meeting in the Ukrainian capital.

Lugansk is the capital of the Lugansk People's Republic - one of the two former eastern Ukrainian regions that declared independence from Kiev in 2014 in the wake of the Western-backed Maidan coup in Kiev. Russia recognized its independence in February 2022, just days before the start of its military campaign in Ukraine. In autumn 2022, the Lugansk People's Republic joined Russia, together with three other former Ukrainian territories following a series of referendums.

Kiev has never recognized the results of the vote and called the referendums a "sham." It still considers the four territories - as well as Crimea, which rejoined Russia in 2014 after a referendum- to be part of Ukraine.

Moscow has repeatedly stated that it was ready for peace talks with Kiev but only if the "reality on the ground" is recognized, which includes the four regions' decision to be part of Russia.

On Monday, Baerbock said that "every village... every meter" the Ukrainian troops seize from Russian forces brings Kiev closer to EU membership. She did not name any specific timeline linked to Ukraine's potential accession to the bloc.

Comment: Oh, does she mean the 144 square miles of fields and wrecked villages Ukraine has won back in months of heavy fighting? Not much result for depleting all their crack reserves.

What matters: Russia has gained more territory this year than Ukraine

The leaders of the EU member states are supposed to discuss the start of accession talks with Kiev at a meeting on Friday in Granada, Spain. The EU Commission is allegedly expected to provide a recommendation on the issue in November, with the final decision being taken in mid-December, Germany's news outlet Stern reported.

Earlier, Bloomberg reported that some member states have concerns about potential overextension of the bloc by accepting Ukraine and channeling resources toward it. Also, Politico reported in September that the EU believed Ukraine was a "very corrupt country," adding that the prevalence of graft could affect its membership prospects.

Comment: Ms. Baerbock must be imbibing some top-grade kool-aid. All four regions who have voted to join Russia are already considered to be part of Russia. By virtue of their constitution, Russia will never give them up.

Wait a minute, this isn't just about the Russian constitution.

If I remember correctly, currently there are 4 ways to legally change borders in INTERNATIONAL law.

One of them is a referendum of the citizens of a given area.

You can claim that referendums were a sham if you have evidence to prove it.But you cannot accuse Russia of acting against international law!

Like it or not, Russia is in law!

...and that's the madness of the current situation

The above thought is quite obvious to me. However, in my opinion, this author makes the same mistake as many other authors.

In war, both sides waste countless young lives which have been nurtured, educated, fed and clothed for 18-30 years, and the material production of other lives, those who build the armaments, plus the destruction of critical infrastructure - houses, bridges, roads, factories. All of it is simply destroyed, and the side who has greater stores of lives, money and infrastructure to waste and throw away "wins," while the other side, having had all its assets wasted, "loses."

In reality, both sides have lost the war. Both sides have destroyed each others' populations and treasure, and had their own destroyed as well. War is nothing but waste and destruction on both sides. Instead of building happy and fulfilled lives for their populations, both sides destroy and are destroyed in turn.

In centuries past, victorious armies could cart away treasure, loot, and slaves of the defeated enemy, and turn his depopulated lands and pastures into productive assets to grow crops and raise livestock. Today, that does not happen. Each side destroys the assets of the other until one submits. Nothing is gained by the victor, who in fact simply loses all that he has spent in fighting the vanquished. War in these modern times is the most pointless exercise human beings can engage in.
