This has been clear from the start. Cameron only allowed the vote because he was certain it would fail and May's plan seems to have been purposefully made unpalatable in order to ensure its non-acceptance. The fundamental question regarding Ireland must be answered one way or another: Is N Ireland part of the UK or is it part of Ireland? Having it both ways, as they are seeking to do, is not a tenable position. The Irish issue is a normal consequence of attempting to retain a significant part of an occupied colonial territory well beyond its time. The descendants of the Brits who migrated to N Ireland during the active colonial period still consider themselves to be Brits and not Irish - this is not likely to change for many generations to come, no matter if (or how) the current national and/or economic borders are redrawn.
