Science of the Spirit
Basically, most of them touch on how there are many different worlds, universes, dimensions, or whatever you would like to call them. Each one the same as our own but also different in some way. For instance, in another world, you might be living the same life as you are now but perhaps politics had gone in a different direction. Maybe all of the presidents that were elected here in the US were opposite from how they are in our world. Maybe everything is the same except for you have different colored hair? The differences between worlds could be minuscule or extreme, it all varies.
While throughout the years' many physicists and researchers, in general, have been trying hard to prove the existence of this kind of thing, it has proven to be quite the task. That being said, the concept itself has not been disproven. Now, what this article is about is a concept many do not realize is quite prevalent in these theories. We are all connected to these other worlds or universes. Each one might be separate from our own but it has been suggested time and time again that when we experience things like deja vu or peculiar dreams we are getting a glimpse into one of these other worlds.
This means that when someone in another world is dreaming they could be catching a glimpse into your world as well. Really think about it, if you have some kind of counterpart in another world and he or she is dreaming they would be seeing perceptions of the lives you and all of the others are living. Isn't that mind-blowing and slightly terrifying? I guess in this sense dreams are more or less portals.
While it is a bit much to take in hopefully in the future we will be able to prove things through. How do you feel about all of this?

Are our dreams glimpses of other dimensions? No. There is much more going on in the subconscious then most people realise. The catch phrase "We use only 10% of our brain" (attributed to the imposter Einstein) is crap. The "missing" 90% is the subconscious. Which isn't as easily cheated as our conscious mind.

However what this article is talking about is I think not precisely dreams but more of the potential for human consciousness to perceive that which lies beyond our physical senses.
I have briefly experienced this a few times but nowhere near enough to understand it. One time was recently when I awoke from sleep to find that the light coming in from my window was green. I looked at it briefly and though to myself "hmmm that is weird, why is it green?" although I didnt seem to care and promptly went back to sleep. A short time later however I heard my alarm go off, so I went to turn it off and saw that the light was still green, didn't care, and went back to sleep again. Then a while later my alarm goes off again.. which is even more strange as I knew I already turned it off (and it doesn't have a snooze alarm), this time when I opened my eyes the light was no longer green but the normal color of yellowish/whitish.
This experience gave me the impression that I was awaking in a different reality. The light color alone wasn't enough to convince me but the alarm going off twice (once in each reality) with a significant time delay between them was very convincing that something weird and novel happened to my consciousness.
A few years earlier I had experienced something similar where I 'awoke' from sleep but not fully awake and I had this vibrating sensation (along with some paralysis), the light coming from my window looked weird (although the color was normal), I looked to my right and saw a person with blue skin who was doing a silly dance. This was fairly creepy and I couldn't seem to look at the person completely directly. This experience was quite transient though and I shortly awakened again to 'reality' to find that there was no evidence of anybody else in my room.
I would like to learn more about this stuff but the experiences are so few and far between and so fleeting it seems impossible to explore it further.
I view lucid dreams as more of a connection with other worlds rather than just the nonsensical. Everything is similar yet, slightly different. Yes, we are "awake" during these bouts but as you said, it is our subconscious interacting not our physical self.
"I 'awoke' from sleep but not fully awake and I had this vibrating sensation (along with some paralysis),"
I have that often, however, without the silly dancing blue being. I tend to go straight into a lucid dream.
Personally I believe that even if there is external consciousness, the brain is still needed for us as a kind of filter/interface (just see any person with dementia or Alzheimer's you know before the illness happened, or if (un)lucky a person with brain damaged in accident or through pharmaceuticals), and since the brain can work in automatic mode without external consciousness, and can create the same illusion either way, it's impossible to say using only scientific methods.
The frequency shift as your awareness comes back reveals that the birdsong changes pitch, try it.
