Geomagnetic Storm: Electrical Ground Currents Detected in Norway

A polar geomagnetic storm (Kp=5) is in progress following the impact of a CME around 1100 UT on Sept. 9th. This could be the first of several hits from a series of CMEs expected to reach Earth during the weekend. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras after nightfall.

Electrical ground currents caused by the storm have been detected in Norway. Rob Stammes writes:

Today, September 09, 2011 at 12.45 UTC the first CME arrived as a magnetic shockwave on my instruments. There is also an effect in signal strength from my vlf receivers, coming through electrons in the solarwind cloud. The magnetic field is unstable at the moment, it means a big change for auroras coming night.

Power outage in California

Is it too far fetched to think that something like this event might have something to do with our HUGE power outage last night..here in California?? Do we believe that, that was really caused by some one at the power company??

It's a long story, but here's an overview that will give you some hints if you want to research it.

In the mid-90s the power utilities, backed by Wall Street of course, got the bright idea to push for deregulation. In California, the legislature let it go ahead - their palms having been sufficiently greased by the utility lobbyists - but established an electrical power management operation called the Independent System Operator that was supposed to ensure regulation to prevent individual utilities from gaming the power system.

Phil and Wendy Gramm of Texas, he of the US Senate and she of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, had a lot to do with relaxing federal power utility and financial regulations to enable this. Not coincidentally, a Texas company called Enron got into the new energy trading business that it invented to take advantage of all this.

A few years later, the Independant System Operator was up and in charge of trading and controlling electrical power all over California. Enron gamed the system mercilessly leading to skyrocketing power rates punctuated by rolling blackouts during times of peak demand. The two largest power utilities in the state went bankrupt and others were badly hurt financially. California electric ratepayers were raped for about $10 billion, give or take, and the federal government didn't lift a finger. Enron's CEO Ken Lay was a big Dubya Bush supporter.

Former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger was in on this.

Enron was a house of cards and blew up in spectacular fashion not long after, throwing all its employees out of work and impoverishing many of them and defaulting on their pensions, along with wiping out its stockholders. The Big Five accounting firm Arthur Andersen lost its license to practice for colluding with Enron and imploded, putting all of its employees on the street too. Bush II stopped taking phone calls from 'Kenny boy' Lay, and Lay was convicted of fraud, along with his CFO, and died in prison. "Enron" is synonymous with fraud.

The electric power distribution network in California is still run, very inefficiently, by the Independant System Operator. You ought to be thankful that the county wide blackout in San Diego didn't spread to the rest of California.

the power outage in CA is being blamed on 1 man. funny one man can kill the power to millions of people by one misake it does not sound right at all.... im following my gut on this one im feeling lied to.

sorta funny how much it knocked out with one unit out an Orange County in California has already had power returned. San Diego has over one million people without power until Friday. Mexico has two million without power.

Well, any terrorists worth their salt will have already thought of taking out nuclear power plants. Except there aren't any terrorists in the US, so the FBI has go out and entrap a few mentally challenged muslims every once in a while to justify their salaries in the War on (of) Terror.

Blowing up nuclear plants wouldn't be very effective, however. There are enough hydroelectric dams and conventional fossil fueled power plants to keep the US electrical grid operating at reduced levels. And a nuclear plant disaster doesn't kill lots of people right away, although it can kill a few people within days to months, and many more decades later. Japanese life expectancy is declining.

So no, if some group wanted to take down the US electrical grid, the best way to do that would be to knock down many of the very high voltage transmission lines that interconnect regional utilities with the major cities and densely populated suburban areas.

Terrorist attacks won't be needed, however. The nuclear power plant builders have practically guaranteed that disasters will happen in the future due to dangerous reactor designs, monumentally stupid plant siting decisions, cutting corners and costs during plant construction and a dozen other ways. The next major earthquake(s) in California are very likely to cause nuclear accidents approaching the scale of the Fukushima catastrophe in Japan. It is almost statistical certainty, and if the nuclear plant at San Onofre experiences a major disaster, Southern California from San Diego all the way up to the Bay Area might become uninhabitable, like the 'dead zone' around Chernobyl.

Look for the big picture
