Philippines Gold Rush: 7 Dead in Mining Landslide

At least seven people are believed to have been killed after a landslide struck a gold-rush mountain community in the southern Philippines.

Three days of heavy rains spawned the landslide on Thursday, which covered makeshift mining tunnels in a mountain area in Mindanao, said Mati City Mayor Michelle Rabat.

She said a village chief in the isolated area told her by telephone that seven bodies had been recovered from the tunnels and the miners were digging to find more people believed buried.

Other miners who descended from the mountains gave similar accounts, Rabat told AFP.

Hurricane Isaac spawns Illinois tornadoes

Image
Heavy rainfall in Springfield, Illinois
Much of New Orleans was still without power Saturday, the handiwork of Hurricane Isaac, the remnants of which triggered tornadoes in Illinois, officials said.

New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu said cleanup of trees and debris was under way in the storm-stricken city, but the lack of power was frustrating.

"Like everyone else, my patience is wearing thin," he said. "This is more than an inconvenience; it continues to be dangerous for everybody."

The (New Orleans) Times-Picayune reported the electric utility Entergy Corp. said only about 40 percent of New Orleanians had power, while the lights were on for about 46 percent of the people in Jefferson Parish about four days after Isaac hit.

The U.S. Department of Energy said more than 15,000 electricity workers from more than 24 states were assessing the damage and working to restore power.

Hurricane Isaac kills seven, cities still underwater after storm hits US

The degree of damage handed out by Isaac has thankfully been but a sliver of what Katrina caused seven years earlier, but the latest storm has managed to be impressively ravaging still. Isaac has so far taken at least seven lives.

Now with the worst of the storm behind the state of Louisiana, residents are returning to their homes - or what's left - and taking inventory of the destruction caused by the Isaac and assessing the devastation.

Hurricane Isaac uncovers 'mystery' Civil War ship

In the latest installment of a spooky pattern of events, Hurricane Isaac uncovered a boat believed to be a Civil War blockade runner on the beaches of Gulf Shores, Ala. Photos of the ship were posted to Facebook by Meyer Vacation Rentals. Gulf Shores is about an hour's drive from Mobile, Ala., to the west and Pensacola, Fla., to the east. The ship was partially uncovered during Hurricane Ivan in 2004, and in 2008 Hurricane Ike uncovered more of the boat.

When Hurricane Isaac swept through the Gulf Coast, making landfall to the west in Louisiana, the 9-12 foot storm surge pushed away more of the sand around the boat. When the water receded, it revealed most of the boat's hull. On its Facebook page, Meyer Vacation Rentals noted the uncanny pattern of events.

"Hmmm ... 2004, 2008, 2012. All hurricanes with names beginning with I. All within a couple of weeks on the calendar," the note read. "While we hope it's the end of the pattern, we must admit it sure is interesting to see it appear!" "That's kind of spooky," Meyer Vacation Rentals spokeswoman Sarah Kuzma told The Daily Caller with a laugh.

Apple harvests across Europe ravaged by extreme weather

Huge hail storms pounded the UK this summer
This year's extreme weather conditions, which have devastated US cereal crops and Guatemalan maize, have claimed a fresh victim: the Cox's Orange Pippin.

Production of the quintessentially English apple, which has been around since the 19th century, is believed to be down by about a quarter this year after unseasonal weather battered blossom and stopped insects ferrying pollen around England's orchards.

Weakening Isaac hovers over water-logged Louisiana

Isaac staggered toward central Louisiana early Thursday, its weakening winds still potent enough to drive storm surge into portions of the coast and the River Parishes between New Orleans and Baton Rouge.
New Orleans - Isaac hovered over Louisiana for a third day Thursday, shedding more than a foot of additional rain that forced authorities to hurriedly evacuate areas ahead of the storm and rescue hundreds of people who could not escape as the rapidly rising waters swallowed entire neighborhoods.

The huge spiral weather system weakened to a tropical depression as it crawled inland, but it caught many places off guard by following a meandering, unpredictable path. The storm's excruciatingly slow movement meant that Isaac practically parked over low-lying towns and threw off great sheets of water for hours.

"I was blindsided. Nobody expected this," said Richard Musatchia, who fled his water-filled home in LaPlace, northwest of New Orleans.

Inside the fortified levees that protected New Orleans, bursts of sunshine streamed through the thick clouds, and life began to return to normal. But beyond the city, people got their first good look at Isaac's damage: Hundreds of homes were underwater. Half the state was without power at the one point. Thousands were staying at shelters.

Hurricane Isaac: Dam collapse feared due to storm; thousands evacuating

Authorities are considering a controlled breach of a dam along the Mississippi-Louisiana border due to rising water levels after Hurricane Isaac made land fall. NBC's Thanh Truong reports.

Up to 50,000 people in Louisiana's Tangipahoa Parish were ordered to evacuate Thursday morning when water from Tropical Storm Isaac threatened to overwhelm a dam across the state line in Mississippi.
