The fifth winter storm of the season has hit northwestern Mexico, causing heavy snow in Baja California that has shut down highways and forced local schools to close.

The Centinela-La Rumorosa highway, the main route along the U.S. border, was temporarily closed in both directions on Tuesday morning, after heavy snowfall that started on Monday night in the town of La Rumorosa in the municipality of Tecate. Local authorities have set up a temporary shelter and are coordinating with the Red Cross to provide assistance to those who need it.

As of shortly before 11 a.m. local time, the state transportation ministry announced that the Centinela-La Rumorosa highway was open in both directions. The La Rumorosa-Tecate free highway was also open in both directions while the La Rumorosa-Tecate tollway remained closed, the ministry said.

This is the terrifying moment an avalanche swept through a Himalayan ski resort in Indian-controlled Kashmir, killing two Polish skiers and burying 21 others under piles of snow.

Horrifying footage shows a wall of snow roaring down from the 14,400ft peak of Mount Apharwat and towards the group of skiers, sending them running for safety.

But a total of 21 foreign tourists and their two Kashmiri guides were caught in the massive avalanche and buried under the snow as they were skiing high in the mountains near the tourist resort town of Gulmarg, local police said.

High-altitude rescue teams rushed to the site on snow scooters and retrieved the bodies of the two Polish skiers, police officer Amod Nagpuri said.

A 6.0-magnitude earthquake rocked the southern Philippines on Wednesday, the US Geological Service said, with local authorities warning of aftershocks and possible damage.

The quake struck at 6:44 pm (1044 GMT), near Monkayo municipality in Davao de Oro province on Mindanao island.

There were no immediate reports of major damage.

"It was quick and lasted for 15 to 20 seconds," said police Corporal Lucita Ambrocio, who is based in the nearby municipality of New Bataan

Girl killed in dog attack in Milton Keynes, UK

A four-year-old girl has died in a dog attack in Milton Keynes, police said.

Officers attended a house on Broadlands in Netherfield on Tuesday evening after it was reported a dog had attacked a child in the back garden.

Thames Valley Police confirmed the girl died at the scene and the animal had been "humanely destroyed".

A spokesman for the force described the attack, which happened at about 17:00 GMT, as a "tragic incident". No arrests have been made.

Mexico's Popocatepetl volcano erupted twice on Tuesday, January 31, with authorities cautioning residents to stay alert for expected ash fall in surrounding municipalities.

Footage captured by a fixed camera in San Nicolas de los Ranchos, Mexico, shows the moment the eruption occurred at 12:29 am Tuesday morning, followed by a second eruption at 6:59 am.

The National Civil and Protection Service said the "moderate explosion" shot "incandescent fragments" almost 2 kilometers (1.25 miles) from the crater rim.

A massive boulder crashed into a Hawaii home over the weekend, narrowly missing a woman inside, dramatic footage shows.

The video captures the unsuspecting woman walking down a hallway inside her hillside Honolulu house when the boulder breaks through a wall mere feet away from her, creating a trail of destruction.

Officials said the boulder, which is five feet high and wide, broke through the home's cinderblock wall, living room and then another wall before it settled in a bedroom near midnight Saturday, Hawaii News Now reported.

The dark skies in the Arctic Circle recently shone with ethereal multi-colored light. But this jaw-dropping spectacle was not caused by auroras. Instead, the iridescent rainbows were caused by clouds of tiny ice crystals floating higher in the atmosphere than is normally possible.

The clouds, known as polar stratospheric clouds (PSC), only form when the lower stratosphere reaches temperatures below minus 114 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 81 degrees Celsius). Normally, clouds do not form in the stratosphere because it is too dry, but at these extremely low temperatures "widely-spaced water molecules begin to coalesce into tiny ice crystals" that form into clouds, Spaceweather.com reported. This means PSCs can form much higher up than normal clouds, between 9.3 and 15.5 miles (15 to 25 kilometers) above the ground.

As sunlight shines through these crystal clouds, it gets scattered, creating multiple different wavelengths of light, which has inspired the PSCs nickname, "rainbow clouds." Due to the extreme altitude of the clouds sunlight can hit the crystals and scatter above an observer even if the sun is beyond the horizon, which is when these clouds appear brightest.

Fresh snowfall affected road and air traffic, snapping Kashmir valley's connection with the rest of the country on Monday, and disrupted normal life in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, too, with a number of highways and states roads shut and power supply to several areas interrupted. Avalanche warnings were issued in 10 districts of J&K and in some areas of Himachal.

As many as 68 flights to and from Srinagar were cancelled and the Srinagar-Jammu national highway was closed following heavy snowfall in Kashmir and the upper reaches of Jammu on Monday morning. The NH was shut due to shooting stones and mudslides at several places between Chanderkot and Banihal.

In Himachal, 496 roads were closed due to heavy snow, with the Manali-Keylong road completely blocked. Daily life was thrown out of gear in Shimla, Lahaul and Spiti and Kinnur districts where 180, 158 and 73 roads, respectively, were blocked, while 908 power transformers and water supply were also affected.

Hawaii is famous for its sunny and warm beaches, but Mother Nature still has something else in mind Monday as the islands continue to get hit with heavy rain and high winds to kick off the week.

Flood Watches remain in effect for most of the islands into Monday evening as a strong area of low pressure soaks the state from east to west, dropping several inches of rain on some of the islands, or in a few cases, more than 2 feet of rain.

Rainfall totals widely vary depending on terrain and whether it faces the wind, but on Maui and Molokai, some storm totals have reached 17 to 25 inches on the windward side of the mountains. Kahului and Wailuku reported 3 to 6 inches over the past 72 hours.

Fresh powder is a coveted commodity in the snowmobiling business, and riders in the Snowy Range are over their heads in the bounty of recent storms.

"We're hearing reports of up to 7 feet of powder up near the top of the range," Hunter Wright, director of operations at Albany Lodge, told Cowboy State Daily on Monday.

"It's gotten so deep in places, people are even getting stuck out on the flats," he said, adding that 4-5 feet of powder has been reported across most of the Snowy Range's extensive snowmobiling network.
