Large hailstones pound areas of Uruguay

hail
Strong hailstorms hit Uruguay this Thursday. According to the Uruguayan Institute of Meteorology (Inumet), the storms hit points in the departments of Florida and Rivera.

The ice blocks in some localities were large, as in the case of Vichadero, in Rivera, very close to the Aceguá municipality, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, on the border of the two countries. The warm air that advances from the north favored the formation of clouds of great vertical development over the Uruguayan territory this Thursday.

An erupting volcano in the Canary Islands has blown open a third fissure - sending a fresh river of lava down the mountainside.

It came as authorities recorded eight new earthquakes up to magnitude 3.5 on the island of La Palma on Friday.

They are now waiting to see whether lava from the new fissure - which burst open around 400m to the north of original eruption site - will join the main flow from the Cumbre Vieja volcano range, which has reached the Atlantic Ocean.

DEAD
Seven horses were killed by a lighting strike in Maarheze on Wednesday afternoon. According to vet Carolien van der Ploeg, the lightning likely struck an electric fence near which the horses were at the time, BN De Stem reports.

The owner of Paardenrusthuis Ogier, a kind of retirement home where old horses spend their last years, happened to be in the pasture when it happened. The weather suddenly turned bad at around 2:00 p.m., he said to the newspaper. The horses, some 26 in total, gathered together and walked into the meadow. "Horses usually stand with their behinds against the wind so that their heads don't get wet," the owner explained.

Investigators say a possible intruder at home in Coweta County was mauled to death by the homeowner's dogs. They say the resident returned home Friday morning and discovered a dead man on his front porch.

An autopsy confirmed the cause of death as a dog attack. Investigators say the evidence indicates the man was inside where the dogs were located at some point but died outside the home.

Investigators say the homeowner doesn't know the man or why he would be in his home.
