Jeffrey Epstein, the billionaire pedophile who could bring down Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton

Editor's note: This article has been updated to reflect the withdrawal of Virginia Roberts Guiffre's allegations against Alan Dershowitz and the striking of the allegations from the court record by a federal judge.

For Jeffrey Epstein and his famous friends, the Aughts were a simpler time, when the businessmen, academics, and celebrities who counted themselves among the playboy philanthropist's inner circle could freely enjoy the fruits of his extreme wealth and connections.

Epstein's little black book and flight logs read like a virtual Who's Who: Bill Clinton, Donald Trump, Larry Summers, Kevin Spacey, Prince Andrew, and Naomi Campbell all hitched rides on Epstein's private planes. Socialites and distinguished scientists went to visit Epstein's island in St. Thomas, and cavorted at epic dinner parties at his palatial townhouse—then the largest privately owned residence in New York, as he liked to brag. There, they picked at elaborate meals catered by celebrity chefs like Rocco DiSpirito, marvelled at Epstein's opulent decor, and noted the pack of very, very young model-types with whom Epstein always seemed to surround himself.

But a darker story was going on underneath the glamour. In 2008, Epstein was convicted of soliciting sex from an underage girl and quietly paid settlements to scores of alleged victims who said he serially molested them. But the girls kept coming out of the woodwork—in 2014, another young woman filed a lawsuit claiming that Epstein used her as a sex slave for his powerful friends—and that she'd been at parties on his private island with former President Clinton.

And just last week, yet another "Jane Doe" filed a suit in New York accusing Epstein and Donald Trump of raping her at a series of sex parties when she was only 13.

Trump has denied Jane Doe's claims and his reps have said he barely knew Epstein—even though New York media in the '90s regularly chronicled his comings-and-goings at Epstein's Upper East Side palace, and even though Epstein had 14 private numbers for Trump and his family in his little black book. Meanwhile, Bill and Hillary Clinton have remained mum about their ties to the Palm Beach pedophile—despite evidence that shows Bill was one of the most famous and frequent passengers on Epstein's "Lolita Express" and that Epstein donated money to the Clinton Foundation even after his conviction.

For months, talking heads have wondered whether Trump would use Epstein and his girls as a weapon against Bill and Hillary Clinton.

Now, with the latest federal lawsuit against Trump himself, it seems the notorious financier has become a serious liability for both campaigns.

A fresh batch of emails from Hillary Clinton's campaign chairman and former counselor to President Obama, John Podesta, has been released by Wikileaks.

As many as 1190 new emails comprise part of the latest release, adding to the more than 4,000 emails from Podesta already released by the whistleblowing website. Wikileaks founder Julian Assange claims they are sitting on a trove of 50,000 messages.

Included in the release is an email chain from February 15, 2016 titled 'Pushback on immigration,' which shows a request for Ken Salazar, who was the US secretary of the interior from 2009 to 2013, to write an op-ed to smear Bernie Sanders' "professed support for immigration."

No surprise: Putin cancels visit to France amid Syria tensions

Russian President Vladimir Putin has canceled a planned visit to France after Paris shortened the program for the trip. The development comes amid increased tensions between Russia and France over Moscow's veto of a French UN Security Council draft resolution on Syria.

Putin was expected to arrive in Paris next week, but the visit has now been postponed, the Kremlin confirmed.

"There were some events scheduled, including the opening of a Russian cultural and religious center, [and] exhibitions. Unfortunately, those events were struck off the program, so the president decided to cancel his visit to France for now," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

Jeffrey Epstein: A 'sex slave' scandal that exposed elite pedophile rings

Comment: Warning: This article contains graphic content.

In 2005, the world was introduced to reclusive billionaire Jeffrey Epstein, friend to princes and an American president, a power broker with the darkest of secrets: He was also a pedophile, accused of recruiting dozens of underage girls into a sex-slave network, buying their silence and moving along, although he has been convicted of only one count of soliciting prostitution from a minor. Visitors to his private Caribbean island, known as "Orgy Island," have included Bill Clinton, Prince Andrew and Stephen Hawking.

According to a 2011 court filing by alleged Epstein victim Virginia Roberts Giuffre, she saw Clinton and Prince Andrew on the island but never saw the former president do anything improper. Giuffre has accused Prince Andrew of having sex with her when she was a minor, a charge Buckingham Palace denies.

"Epstein lives less than one mile away from me in Palm Beach," author James Patterson tells The Post. In the 11 years since Epstein was investigated and charged by the Palm Beach police department, ultimately copping a plea and serving 13 months on one charge of soliciting prostitution from a 14-year-old girl, Patterson has remained obsessed with the case.

"He's a fascinating character to read about," Patterson says. "What is he thinking? Who is he?"

It would be great if these sub-humans were held accountable, but given the way they protect each other, we aren't holding our breath. The best protection we have for ourselves and our children is knowledge; a better understanding of how these predators operate and learning how to spot them. US missile defense shield in Europe is aimed against Russia - Chinese military

US soldier

US antimissile shield in Europe directly threats Russia, a senior-ranking Chinese general said as cited by RIA Novosti. He added that US actions across the globe disrupt the balance of regional power and provoke regional instability.

"The US did not provide legally-binding guarantees that the missile defense system they are deploying in Europe would not be aimed against Russia. But at the same time it poses a real and direct threat to the Russian security," the general reportedly said in a speech at the Xiangshan international security forum in Beijing.

The assessment is similar to that of the Russian military, which insists that the American antimissile shield in Europe compromises Russia's security and needs to be countered with better ballistic missiles and capabilities to destroy antimissile sites, should the need arise.

"China and Russia have similar positions about strategic antiballistic missile systems and oppose attempts by any nation or group of nations to create such systems unilaterally at the expense of strategic international security," the general said.

Norway says talks have begun with Washington over a "long-standing US wish" to deploy marines on the Nordic country's soil.

"Assessments have taken place within the military to look at the options for additional training, storage and this kind of thing," said Norwegian Defense Ministry spokeswoman Ann Kristin Salbuvik on Monday.

She stressed that the troops will probably be deployed on a rotational basis and that permanent deployment is not a question.

'US lackey': French politicians blast Hollande for reluctance to meet with Putin

French politicians sharply criticized French President Francois Hollande for remarks, in which he said he was uncertain whether he should meet with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in light of the situation in the Syrian city of Aleppo.

On Sunday, Hollande told France's TMC Channel that was uncertain whether he should receive his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin during his forthcoming visit to Paris.

"I asked myself the question ... Is it useful? Is it necessary? Can it be a way of exerting pressure? Can we get him to stop what he is doing with the Syrian regime?" Hollande told TMC on Sunday, adding that he "asks himself if he has to receive Vladimir Putin."

"If I receive him, I will tell him that [what Russia does in Aleppo] is unacceptable," he said, describing Russia' campaign in Aleppo as a "war crime."

"Those who commit these acts will have to pay for their involvement, including at the International Criminal Court," he added.

NATO bets on 'strong defense, deterrence & dialogue' with Russia - Stoltenberg

NATO meeting

NATO General Secretary Jens Stoltenberg sees no contradiction between the biggest increase in the alliance's military presence near Russia's borders since the end of the Cold War and its alleged intention to continue political dialogue with Moscow.

"We have to combine the idea of strength, deterrence, defense and dialogue. For me, there is no contradiction between strong defense and a political dialogue," Stoltenberg said during a roundtable in Passau, Bavaria, where he was joined by European Council President Donald Tusk and European Parliament President Martin Schulz. "It is very important at the same time to avoid a new Cold War. We do not want a new arms race."

Stoltenberg said he was not unduly alarmed by Russia's recent re-deployment of potentially nuclear-tipped Iskander missiles to its westernmost exclave, Kaliningrad.

Unbelievable! British UN Envoy accuses Russia of 'killing moderate, peaceful' rebels in Syria

Sputnik/Mikhail Alayeddin

The statement made by the British Envoy to the United Nations on Saturday came less than 48 hours after the "moderate" and "peaceful" rebels signed an agreement to start fighting alongside a Daesh (ISIS) offshoot Jund al-Aqsa in addition to al-Qaeda affiliate al-Nusra Front.

The British Ambassador to the United Nations delivered a blistering speech during Saturday's Security Council meeting condemning Russian airstrikes in Aleppo saying that Moscow's claims to wanting a lasting peace in Syria were a sham before walking out of the meeting.

Matthew Rycroft's grandstanding act, modeled after US Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power's orchestrated walk-out one week earlier, shows the growing divide between Russia and Western powers on the appropriate manner and method to deal with the crisis in Syria that has left over 400,000 dead since the war began.

Comment: Another British lawmaker, Conservative Andrew Mitchell, one-upped Rycroft's delusions:
"When it comes to incendiary weapons and munitions such as bunker-buster bombs and cluster bombs, the U.N. makes it clear that the systematic use of such indiscriminate weapons in densely populated areas amounts to a war crime," Mitchell told parliament late on Monday.

"We are witnessing events that match the behavior of the Nazi regime in Guernica in Spain," he said referring to the destruction of the Spanish town in 1937 by German aircraft from Adolf Hitler's Luftwaffe. The bombing of the historic city became the subject of a famous painting by artist Pablo Picasso.
What's the point even responding to this nonsense? Not much. Thus Peskov's response:
"Who's this politician?" Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov asked reporters when told about Mitchell's comment. "Unfortunately I don't know him, who is he? I would not comment in any way. To my shame, I don't know him."

Scandal management: Pentagon spends most of US gov't PR budget

David B. Gleason/Wikipedia

By far the greatest share of the US government's public relations budget - more than all the other agencies combined - is spent by the military, an audit has revealed. While that has helped the Pentagon pitch fancy weapons, it hasn't managed to make them work.

The Department of Defense employs 40 percent of the government's public relations workforce and accounts for almost 63 percent of all public relations spending between 2006 and 2015, according to the Government Accountability Office.

The GAO report on government PR spending, released last week, showed a $1 billion annual outlay on various forms of public relations, with 5,000 government employees working in PR for a combined annual salary of $475 million in 2015. By comparison, the entire Department of Education has 4,500 employees.
