People in one part of eastern Kentucky woke up to a strange feeling Tuesday morning.

Believe it or not, officials say there was a minor earthquake centered near Williamsburg.

It was enough to make for some scary moments for those who experienced it.

People across the mountains were expecting wintry weather this morning, but at six-twenty, people across Whitley County got something else.

One bus driver had just shut down his bus after hearing that school was called off.

"I turned the bus off and went back to bed, it hadn't been but a few minutes, and I felt a pretty violent shaking. It took a while, but I finally realized we had an earthquake," Jimmy Perkins said.

The U.S. Geological Survey confirms it was an earthquake, measuring three point one.

Officials say the earthquake was centered just four miles from Williamsburg, which explains why so many people around here felt it.

Whitley County 911 dispatchers say they got several calls from people across the county who were trying to figure out what had happened.

But it is not unheard of to feel the ground shake, parts of Whitley and Knox County experienced a slightly larger earthquake, a three point seven, back in September 2004, that rattled homes, cracked walls and shattered lights.

You might also remember an earthquake back in April that occurred in Illinois that was felt across the eastern United States.
