Tropical Storm Helene threatens Mexico

Image
After forming close to shore, Tropical Storm Helene headed north along Mexico's Gulf coast early Saturday posing a threat to areas where thousands of people were still recovering from flooding spawned last week by Hurricane Ernesto. The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Helene sprang up Friday then weakened to barely tropical storm strength by nighttime, but its forecast said the storm could strengthen again before making an expected landfall Saturday. Meanwhile, Portugal posted warnings for the central and eastern Azores islands as Tropical Storm Gordon moved eastward across the Atlantic and later turned into a hurricane.

The National Hurricane Center said Gordon had maximum sustained winds of 75 mph and was headed east at 18 mph. Helene had maximum sustained winds of 40 mph and was moving northwest at 7 mph late Friday. It was centered about 65 miles east of Tuxpan. Landfall was predicted for the northern part of Veracruz, a lush coastal state with hundreds of towns and villages sitting along streams and rivers that can swell dangerously in heavy rain. Many were evacuated as Ernesto approached last week, and flood damage made some 10,000 people homeless. Mexico's government declared a state of emergency in more than 100 population centers in Veracruz and was providing them with emergency aid. The country's national weather service warned of intense rains and winds along the Veracruz and Tamaulipas coasts, with heavy rain, hail and lightning possible. Helene was predicted to bring 5 inches to 10 inches of rain, with as many as 15 inches across northeastern portions of Mexico.

Closed circuit cameras in Taiwan captured a man being swallowed by a sinkhole

Closed circuit cameras in Taiwan captured a man being swallowed by a sinkhole. He was walking when the ground disappeared. Rescuers were not able to save the man. Officials believe the heavy rains washed away the soil under the walkway. At least 23 people, including this man, have died from the typhoon's rains. Typhoon Saola was hovering near the Philippines last week and is expected to move on to China.

Stantonsburg took a hard strike from an apparent tornado late Saturday afternoon.

About seven houses along R.B. Avenue and Moyton Drive received major damage and some are beyond repair.

The Stantonsburg Police Department, Wilson County Emergency Management, firefighters, the Wilson County Sheriff's Office and the American Red Cross all responded to the emergency scene.

Judy Watson helped guide customers to the back of the Piggly Wiggly store in town as the storm approached. Her husband, Robert, who owns the store with her, was at their home on Saratoga Street when the storm hit.

"I saw the funnel cloud as it was leaving the area," Robert said. "It was an intense moment."

Their carport has been ripped away from their home. The whole end of their home's roof was lifted up by winds. You can spot cracks of daylight from inside the house where the ceiling became unhinged from the wall. Housing insulation litters the area where the carport used to stand. The carport itself has been reduced to dozens of shredded boards.

Wrecked Airplanes and Power Outages after Texas Storm

Thousands of people were without power, buildings were ripped apart and airplanes were damaged at an area airport after storms raged through north Texas.

Aerial footage showed damage to at least 15 small planes and several buildings at Fort Worth's Meacham International Airport after winds reached more than 70 mph.

As the storm tore through the airport, many of the airplanes were tossed around the tarmac and walls and roofs of the nearby buildings were pulled off.

In nearby Denton County, northwest of Fort Worth, The Dallas Morning News reported several structures, including a home and barns, were also damaged.

More than 22,000 people were still without power on Monday, a figure down from the around 50,000 people that had lost power due to the bad weather, the newspaper reported.

No injuries were reported.

China reservoir collapse kills at least 10

Image
At least 10 people were killed and dozens injured after the earthen wall of a reservoir collapsed in eastern China, flooding a rural area, state media said Sunday. The 29-metre (96-foot) wall, part of a reservoir in Zhejiang province, collapsed early Friday, following heavy rainfall after Typhoon Haikui passed through the area, the China Daily newspaper said.

The paper put the death toll at 10 while the official Xinhua news agency said Saturday that 11 people died and 27 were injured. Local officials in Shenjiakeng village, where the accident took place, could not be immediately reached for comment. The collapse flooded a 'large area' of the village with water and silt, affecting 80 families and damaging at least a third of homes, China Daily said.

Hajja landslides in Yemen leave six dead

Tens of residents in Kahlan district in Hajja have been displaced from the area after six people died in landslides Friday morning, according to Hadi Wardan, a member of the Hajja Local Council.

"People are afraid that landslides may happen again, particularly because of heavy rain in the area," Wardan said.

He said charity associations have provided camps and food for the displaced people in response to the landslides. He also condemned the absence of the government and of concerned authorities in helping those residents affected by the disaster.

Hajja is located northwest of Sana'a.

Majed Al-A'war, a Hajja resident, said four women died in the landslides, and others were taken to hospital. The women were buried immediately, on Friday afternoon.

Al-A'war said the landslide happened while the women were performing the Fajr (Down) prayer. When their bodies were found, they were wearing prayer clothing.

New storm threatens flood-hit Philippines as half a million people evacuate homes in Manila

Philippine authorities have warned of an intensifying storm could bring more misery to the nation's flood-battered capital and surrounding areas, where nearly half a million people are in evacuation centres.

While flooding that covered 80 per cent of Manila last week has largely subsided, vast areas of mainly rice-growing provinces to the north are still under water.

Most of the 411,000 people who are crammed into gymnasiums, schools and other government evacuation centres were in the flooded farming provinces, with many others struggling by living in partly submerged homes.

"These are the people we are most worried about," civil defence chief Benito Ramos said.

"We have not yet fully recovered and here comes another storm."
