Strange cloud formation scares residents in Santiago del Estero, Argentina

A strange cloud formation has left residents in Argentina terrified after it rolled over a city - then suddenly disappeared minutes later.

The video has been uploaded to YouTube by Diario El Liberal and has had more than 3,000 views since December Sunday.

One journalist, who witnessed the bizarre weather phenomenon , told local media: "It was a matter of two or three minutes from when it formed in the sky to when it disappeared.

"We believe that this may have occurred when there was a sudden drop in temperature over Santiago del Estero.

Colorful 'mother of pearl' cloud appears in Swedish skies

Nacreou cloud
This fantastic colorful nacreous cloud appeared in the sky of Abisco, Sweden on December 14, 2015.

Mother of pearl clouds are a kind of polar stratospheric clouds that float through the stratosphere (25 km above Earth surface) and they are fantastically colorful.

Mother of Pearl cloud
These rare colorful clouds form in the lower stratosphere when temperatures drop to around minus 85ºC. The iridescent colors appearing in the clouds are the result of diffraction and interference of sunlight shining through tiny ice particles ~10µm across.

Earth's day is getting longer - Rotation is slowing down

Scientists reveal that the rotation of Earth's core holds a clue to understanding global sea-level rise.

Scientists are studying past changes in sea level to make accurate future predictions of this consequence of climate change, and they're looking down to Earth's core to do so.

"In order to fully understand the sea-level change that has occurred in the past century, we need to understand the dynamics of the flow in Earth's core," says Mathieu Dumberry, a professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Alberta.

The connection is through the change in the speed of Earth's rotation. Meltwater from glaciers not only causes sea levels to rise, but also shifts mass from the pole to the equator, which slows down the rotation. (Picture the Earth as a spinning figure skater. The skater moves his or her arms in to spin more quickly or out to slow down.) The gravity pull from the Moon also contributes to the slowdown, acting a little like a lever brake. However, says Dumberry, the combination of these effects is not enough to explain the observations of the slowing down of Earth's rotation: a contribution from Earth's core must be added.

Details:

This photo was taken by William Nguyen Phuoc in Darwin, Australia on Dec. 8 2015. This looks more like a Gigantic Jet than a Blue Jet but either way it is an amazing event.

A timelapse video of this event shows all the lightning activity before and after the event. You can view it here:

Two suns photographed in Zimbabwe during sunset

Two suns
© Peter LowensteinPeople living in Mutare, Zimbabwe experienced a double sunset on December 11 2015.
These two suns appeared in the clear sunset sky of Mutare, Zimbabwe on December 11, 2015.

Yes these lucky guys had a double sunset last Thursday...

This strange and baffling Two suns phenomenon is not only happening in Indonesia.

On December 11, 2015, Peter Lowenstein witnessed another double sunset event in drought-sicken Zimbabwe.

The second sun formed as our star was setting behind a cumulus cloud in an almost clear and dry sky.

The diffuse duplicate appeared above the cumulus in a thin veil of more distant high cloud.

Kelvin-Helmholtz wave clouds appear over Snowbasin, Utah

It looks like a tsunami in the sky over Snowbasin, Utah.

Also known as Kelvin-Helmholtz wave clouds, these ocean waves in the sky formed on December 10, 2015, and look like Van Gogh´s Starry Night.

Look at these clouds, they look like breaking ocean waves in the sky.

These amazing pictures were captured by at Snowbasin.

It takes a thin layer of shear for a Kelvin-Helmholtz instability to form - two different layers of air moving at different speeds in our atmosphere.

Incredible sun halo captured over Jackson Hole, Wyoming

It looks like a giant eye had suddenly appeared in the sky of Wyoming on December 3, 2015.

These eerie ice halos were captured by Stephen Lyons while skiing on 3rd December 2015 and comprise ultra-rare Parry infralaterals and Lowitz arcs.

The Jackson Hole ice halos came from them ski-slope snow blowers.

The Lowitz arcs are unusual in ski-slope diamond dust. Also, the helic, 46° Parry arcs are rarities that were only seen in exceptional displays at the South Pole before snow blowers.

It looks like something on Earth is changing even at the ice crystal and halo scale.

Have you ever seen two suns setting in the night sky?

A double sun was photographed in the sky of Indonesia last Friday between 17:49:28 and 17:50:46.

This strange, otherworldly sight could just be a hoax, but similar optical illusions have been seen before. Lately in Canada on November 2, 2015.

This is not a common optical phenomenon that we're seeing here. The appearance of a second sun is caused by optical refraction, as atmospheric particles bend light in unusual ways, creating mirages.

I'm asking myself if this is an artifact of the lens. Or a fake? But I don't think so.

I assume this incredible atmospheric phenomenon is created by particles of ice or something in the atmosphere aligned in such a way that they would refract the sunlight at that very small angle, but only in one direction, like a mirror. It would require some fairly peculiar characteristics.

Could this be a giant sundog appearing just on one side of the 'real' sun? A king of collection of the glow creating this haunting orb that makes us think there is an additional sun.

Another Kreutz comet vaporized by the sun

By the time you finish reading this news item, the solar system could have one less comet. Yesterday, Dec. 7th, the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) spotted a comet diving toward the sun. Today, Dec. 8th, it is vaporizing furiously in the solar corona:
Kreutz Comet

The comet is a member of the Kreutz family--fragments from the breakup of a single giant comet many centuries ago. They get their name from 19th century German astronomer Heinrich Kreutz, who studied them in detail. Several Kreutz fragments pass by the sun and disintegrate every day. Most, measuring less than a few meters across, are too small to see, but occasionally a bigger fragment like this one (~10 m to 50 m) attracts attention.

The comet was first noticed in SOHO images by Polish amateur astronomer Szymon Liwo. Judging from the latest SOHO images, his discovery won't last much longer. In fact, the comet's nucleus may have already disintegrated, leaving only a disembodied tail.

Because of their common parentage, sungrazers often come in clusters. For this reason, it wouldn't be surprising to find yet another one in the offing. Monitor Karl Battam's Sungrazing Comet twitter feed for more sightings.
