Sun halo appears during beatification mass in El Salvador

As the relics of Blessed Oscar Romero were brought out for veneration during his beatification Mass in San Salvador, the cloudy skies parted and a ring of light - known as a "solar halo" - appeared around the sun.

"Honestly, I think this one of the most supernatural things I have ever experienced in my life," Father Manuel Dorantes told CNA May 29.

A priest of the diocese of Chicago and Spanish assistant to the director of the Holy See press office, Fr. Dorantes was present in San Salvador for the May 23 beatification of Archbishop Oscar Romero.

Romero oversaw the diocese of San Salvador from 1977 until March 24, 1980, when he was shot and killed while saying Mass. In February Pope Francis officially recognized him as a martyr, and his beatification took place in his former diocese just over a week ago.

The ring around the sun appeared once Cardinal Angelo Amato, prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, had finished reading the official decree proclaiming Oscar Arnulfo Romero as a martyr and a blessed, Fr. Dorantes recalled.

Comment: Sun halos have been much more frequent this year. So far, they have been reported in the UK, Mexico, China, Japan, the U.S., the Virgin Islands, and elsewhere.

A "huge lightning show" took place above northern New Zealand tonight as the sky lit up in a dazzling display of mother nature's power.

Lightning strikes every 15 seconds were reported in Auckland as the city's residents experienced a huge storm.

Jimmy Boswell, in Raglan, said a "huge lightning show" in Raglan lasted for at least 15 minutes as the night sky was shattered by a lighting strike 2-3 times every 10 seconds.

Police have also confirmed a man has been killed by a falling tree in Tinopai, north of Auckland.

A bolt of lightning has also reportedly struck Dargaville Hospital, shattering windows and setting off alarms. No injuries were reported from the lightning strike.

MetService forecasted heavy downpours with damaging wind gusts of up to 130km/h were forecasted predicted to hit Auckland at about 4pm.

People have been warned to stay inside, but if they must drive somewhere then they are advised to take extra care on the roads.

Hundreds of dead fish found on the shore at Big Bear Lake, California

Officials in Big Bear are responding to concerns over hundreds of dead fish that are washing up on shore near the lake.

The photos were sent to Eyewitness News by Big Bear resident Colleen LeBeau. She said she has never seen anything like that in her 30 years of living in the area.

The dead fish are popping up at Stansfield Marsh, east of the lake, and it is apparently due to the drought. Water in the area has been receding over the years and the carps do not move toward the deeper parts of the lake. When the water recedes enough, the fish end up dying.

Crews have been working for the last two weeks to save as many of the fish as they can by catching them in nets and moving them into the deeper parts of the marsh. The dead schools of fish are not floating at Big Bear Lake, according to Dan McKernan, director of public relations and marketing for Big Bear.

A 13-foot female short-finned pilot whale became stranded on the beach Wednesday at Fort Clinch State Park, in Nassau County, according to officials with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Onlookers rushed in to try to keep the whale alive, but wildlife officials said the whale was apparently sick and had to be taken to the Jacksonville Zoo to be euthanized.

Officials said dozens of people tried to keep water on the whale and had wet towels draped over it, trying to keep it cool. But officials said the whale's health was too compromised.

Volunteers helped move the whale onto a stretcher so it could be transported to the zoo. The whale, which weighed over 1,000 pounds, will have a necropsy and other tests done on it to determine what illness caused it to strand itself.

A year after release 'Putin's tigers' are reported as thriving

The Tiger with large striped cat
One year after five orphaned Siberian tigers were released in the Russian Far East the signs are four out of the five are doing well and have adapted successfully to life in the wild.

Thanks to four camera traps IFAW had donated to the Khingan Nature Reserve, there is now have footage of Ilona the tigress looking healthy and marking her territory.

Satellite tracking and camera trap videos show that the rehabilitated orphan tigress continues to thrive in the Russian forests near the Chinese border. By tracking her movements, scientists have learned that she is hunting wolves, deer and wild boar.

"Success stories like Ilona are helping to change the opinion and policy of officials in the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources," said Maria Vorontsova, International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) Russia director. "There was a general belief that it was impossible to rehabilitate and return orphan tiger cubs back to the wild. IFAW and our partner groups have now proven that it is indeed possible."
