'Network': The last brilliant film about the Media

Diana the Huntress, Queen of Television News

"You have meddled with the primal forces of nature, Mr. Beale, and I won't have it!! Is that clear?!... You are an old man who thinks in terms of nations and peoples. There are no nations. There are no peoples. There are no Russians. There are no Arabs. There are no third worlds. There is no West. There is only one holistic system of systems, one vast and immane, interwoven, interacting, multivariate, multinational dominion of dollars. Petro-dollars, electro-dollars, multi-dollars, reichmarks, rins, rubles, pounds, and shekels. It is the international system of currency which determines the totality of life on this planet. That is the natural order of things today. That is the atomic and subatomic and galactic structure of things today! And YOU have meddled with the primal forces of nature, and YOU WILL ATONE!" (Arthur Jensen, to Howard Beale, Network, 1976)

In the brilliant 1976 film, Network, written by Paddy Chayefsky, the programming head of a giant television network, Diana Christensen, shifts the whole news department over to the entertainment division.

Thus emerge new shows with galloping ratings: Howard Beale, Prophet of the Air Waves; The Mao Tse-Tung Hour, in which a guerrilla group films itself carrying out armed bank robberies; and Sybil the Soothsayer, a Tarot reader.

Diana becomes the network's new executive star.

There is no longer even a pretense of a need for news anchors to appear authoritative, objective, or rational.

Diana Christensen is unstoppable. She sees, with burning clarity, that audiences are bored to the point of exhaustion; they now require, as at the end of the Roman Empire, extreme entertainment. They want more crime, more violence, more insanity, out in the open. On television.

Tracking down Macedonia's gang of kidnappers

Hundreds of migrants at a time are being held by a kidnapping gang at a house in Macedonia. Reporter Ramita Navai tracked the house down.

The messages from Mohammed were desperate: please help us; we are so scared.

Mohammed then describes the conditions - about 300 migrants locked inside a few small rooms, crushed in so tightly at times it was hard to breath; at night bodies piled on top of each other to sleep. The house was patrolled by armed guards 24 hours a day, the windows were blacked out with bin bags. Beatings were frequent. Food was scarce. There was no escape.

He sent the messages from his phone when the kidnappers had turned on the internet. The hostages were told to contact their families to send ransom money. But Mohammed and his friend Ahmed, both university students from Syria, had no one to turn to.

Ahmed has not heard from his family since he fled the bombing and Mohammed's mother has lost everything in the war. When they left their home town Aleppo they could never imagine they would find themselves hostages in the heart of Europe, human commodities traded by Afghan people smugglers.

Comment: The war on terror has not only killed millions and left millions more living in destitution, but as we see in this article it has also opened up those who have suffered atrocities to further exploitation by elements of organized crime. How much more suffering must humanity endure at the hands of psychopaths before Mother Nature wipes the slate clean?

Japan flight makes emergency landing after cockpit 'haze'

A Japanese domestic flight was forced to make an emergency landing on the island of Okinawa today after white haze was seen in the Boeing's cockpit, carrier All Nippon Airways said.

The pilot on flight ANA 90, travelling from southern island of Ishigaki to Haneda airport in Tokyo, noticed the "haze-like thing" around 12:50 pm local time as the plane flew near Okinawa, less than an hour after departure, according to an ANA spokeswoman.

"The pilot decided to divert to Naha airport" on Okinawa, she said.

The haze disappeared quickly in the Boeing 767, but the pilot reported a burning smell, she said.

None of the plane's 101 passengers and eight crew members was hurt, and passengers were switched to another flight to Tokyo.

ANA stressed that the case was not regarded as a serious incident, but added that they are investigating the cause.

Comment: On Tuesday an "unusual smell" in the cabin forced an Australian charter plane to make an emergency landing. In the US, a plane heading from Newark to Bradley Airport on Friday, made an emergency landing after a small fire broke out in the cockpit.

Plane related incidents like these seem to be increasing world-wide, see:

People over profits: New Boston grocery store helping to reduce both food waste and unaffordability

Daily Table Dorchester

In an attempt to kill two birds with one stone fruit, a former grocery store chain president has opened a new, nonprofit store in Boston, Massachusetts that hopes to tackle both food waste and the unaffordability of healthy food among the working poor.

Daily Table, a not-for-profit grocery store, opened Thursday in Dorchester, a working-class neighborhood in Boston, featuring cheap, yet healthy foods that traditional grocers are unwilling to sell because of arbitrary 'use by' dates.

The store is the brainchild of Doug Rauch, the former president of Trader Joe's, after seeing tons of perfectly good food tossed out because the items were close to or had surpassed their listed sell-by dates.

Comment: What a fine example of how one person with a self-less idea can bring about a drastic and positive change in the lives of others. Good on him!

"In any civilized nation ... this is the act of paramilitary thugs," Leo Lech told the chief of the Greenwood Village Police Department.
Leo Lech purchased this Greenwood Village, CO home for his son, only for it to be left completely destroyed and uninhabitable by local police who used chemical agents, flash-bang grenades, and a breaching ram to catch a man suspected of shoplifting who ran inside the home.

This all started when suspect Robert Jonathan Seacat shoplifted from a nearby Walmart and fled, then he allegedly barged into a random home and barricaded himself inside.

When the suspected shoplifter wouldn't come out of the home, the Greenwood Village SWAT team decided to turn the scene into what neighbors say looks like that of a war zone.

"They drove their tank right through all of our fences here." a neighbor told 7 News.

Teachers in Texas mock special education students with 'ghetto awards'

Image

A Texas school district has launched an investigation into two middle school teachers' years-long practice of distributing "Ghetto Awards" to children receiving special education services, a CBS affiliate reports.

A 14-year-old Sulphur Springs Middle School student came home from school this week with a certificate that read "8th Annual Ghetto Classroom Awards" on top. The document stated the boy had specifically earned a "huh?" award this year for expressing so much confusion in class. Teachers had handed the certificates out to a classroom of students receiving supportive services for learning disabilities.

The child's mother, Jerrika Wilkins, tells Fox 4 she "felt angry and a bit confused as to what was meant by 'ghetto'," when her son showed her the certificate his teachers had given him. "He feels pretty inferior," Wilkins says of her son's emotional reaction. "You know, he wants to succeed. You know, [the "ghetto" award] just kind of hurt his feelings." Wilkins posted a picture of the document to Facebook.

Wilkins' social media post caused a stir in the community, and quickly caught the attention of Michael Lamb, superintendent of Sulphur Springs Independent School District. Lamb describes his reaction to learning about the "Ghetto Awards" middle school teachers were mockingly bestowing on students.

"Shocked. Shocked. Truly, it goes in layers," Lamb says. "You kind of ask yourself, had anything else been used, the 'teacher's name' award, would it start to seem more acceptable. The 'huh?' award just begs questions. And then the 8th annual brings questions too." The superintendent adds, "It's my understanding the same award was given last year to up to 60 kids."

Comment: As supposed teachers, they should have known. The lack of empathy and insight into how these 'awards' would effect the children is just another sign of the degrading, ponerized education system.

U.S.-supported radicals in Ukraine are anti-gay: LGBT parade ends in violence

lgbt parade ukraine
LGBT themed events in Kiev this week were supposed to demonstrate to the world that "Ukraine is Europe," a showcase of democracy, equality and freedom, as opposed to its backward totalitarian Eastern neighbor. Western mainstream media reporters were on standby to showcase the triumph of Euro-values in Kiev.

Instead, 5 Kiev policemen are now hospitalized, and participants of the parade were advised to disburse in small groups and avoid crowded areas on their way to safety.

The parade lasted less then 30 minutes. It was halted for the sake of safety of the participants, reports TASS.

About 300 people from Ukraine, Sweden and Georgia gathered for the parade.

The organizers advised the participants to break up into small groups, not use public transportation and kept the location of the parade in secret until today, fearing attacks of the radicals. However, all precautions were in vain.

Before the start of the parade about 40 radicals pelted the procession with firecrackers, wounding a policeman in the neck.

Comment: Remember, these 'radicals' are the same people who 'jumped' on Maidan to effect a coup d'etat. These 'radicals' are the same monsters who tortured and murdered protesters in the Odessa massacre. These 'radicals' are the same as those led by Dmitry Yarosh, head of Right Sector and military aide to Viktor Muzhenko. These same 'radicals' have been fighting against Novorossiya, alongside the Ukrainian military. These same 'radicals' are now being integrated into Ukraine's Armed Forces. In sum, these 'radicals' ARE official Ukraine. They're the ones the U.S. has been supporting, and without them, there would be no Maidan, no ATO, no Odessa massacre.

So it's rich that Poroshenko and his fellow clowns are trying to 'Westernize' their image by appearing to be LGBT-friendly. The reality is, they're not. And yet the West has a collective conniption fit about Russia's stances and legislation (more on that here). As usual, the hypocrisy and double standards are amazing.

Indiana's First Church of Cannabis awarded non-profit status

first church of cannabis
Indiana's controversial law, Religious Freedom Restoration Act, has indirectly paved the way for the First Church of Cannabis.

Yes, you read that correctly.

Last, month the aforementioned church based in Indianapolis, won the right to light up and spread their gospel, because they were awarded non-profit status from the Internal Revenue Service.

One may ask themselves, how was this possible?

Well, that would be a very legitimate question.

The First Church of Cannabis, is deemed a charity because, "donors can deduct gifts made to the church on federal tax returns and when the cannabis congregation finds a location, it will be eligible for a property tax exemption - even though neither medical nor recreational marijuana is legal in the state of Indiana."

Comment: While the Deity Dozen of the First Church of Cannabis are certainly noble, reliance on any drug to attain advancement will likely lead nowhere.

Manhunt in NY after inmates perform 'elaborate escape' from prison with power tools

Two prisoners serving life sentences for murder used power tools to drill through the steel walls of a maximum-security prison in northern New York State, close to the Canadian border. A massive manhunt is underway with over 200 police involved.

The prisoners, identified as Richard Matt, 48, and David Sweat, 34, used "an elaborate plot" to escape from the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York governor Andrew Cuomo said.

"A search revealed that there was a hole cut out of the back of the cell through which these inmates escaped," acting state corrections commissioner Anthony Annuci said during a Saturday news conference.

"They went onto a catwalk which is about six stories high. We estimate they climbed down and had power tools and were able to get out of this facility through tunnels, cutting away at several spots," he added.

The two convicts, who had adjoining cells, were discovered missing on Saturday morning during a bed check.

A major security concern is that the Canadian border is only 32 kilometers (20 miles) from the prison. Police have set up road blocks and are using bloodhounds and aerial surveillance in their search.

Officials have described the two convicts as "dangerous individuals" and instructed people not to approach them.
