EU becomes the Economic Government for Europe in all but name

© EPA President of the European Council, Belgian Herman Van Rompuy: I am your leader. You have no choice in the matter. This is fascism by stealth.
The European Union has backtracked on plans to create an "economic government of the European Union" following protests from Britain.

Backed by Ireland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Poland, and the European Commission, Gordon Brown told an EU summit dinner in Brussels late last night that the term, contained in a Franco-German bail-out plan for Greece, was contentious and had to be changed.

Today the revised wording - with "government" altered to "governance" - will be endorsed in summit conclusions designed to signal to global financial markets that the euro is stable and will recover from its current slump.

Letters place Pope at centre of child abuse scandal

Secret documents today placed Pope Benedict XVI at the centre of allegations of cover-up by the Catholic church of a priest sex abuse scandal in the United States.

Letters from the Vatican show that the enforcement department headed by the pontiff, then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, took control of the efforts to bring paedophile priest Father Lawrence Murphy to justice, first ordering in 1997 that a church trial could only go ahead in conditions of total secrecy and then changing tack in 1998 and quashing it.

The change of heart came after Fr Murphy, who had sexually abused 200 vulnerable youths at a school for the deaf in Milwaukee between 1950 and 1974, wrote directly to the future Pope begging for mercy.

Monsignor Tarcisio Bertone, then Cardinal Ratzinger's deputy at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, responded by writing to the US church suggesting they take only lesser, pastoral measures against Fr Murphy.

SOTT Focus: Behold a Palin Horse: The Pathocrats' New Agenda

With the frequent and ongoing Climategate revelations covered in the past months' Connecting the Dots, we've noticed some interesting new developments coming from some even more interesting places. On March 15 The Weekly Standard published an article called 'In Denial: The Meltdown of the Climate Campaign' by Steven F. Hayward. For those who do not know, The Weekly Standard is the Neocon journal par excellence. Its founder and editor is William Kristol, PNAC member and son of CIA asset Irving Kristol. Kirstol and Richard "Prince of Darkness" Perle were two of the major shapers of Bush's war policy. Perle, of course, is a long-time spy for Israel. As an aid for Senator Henry Jackson in 1970, Perle was caught passing classified information to the Israeli embassy. Jackson refused to fire him, and since then Perle's influence has only grown.

One of the first to cry for a Global War on Terror, Kristol has stacked his editorial staff with an array of Israeli lobbyists and fellow Perle cronies: peddler of the false Iraq-Al-Qaeda connection, Stephen Hayes; George Bush speech-writer, co-author of An End to Evil (with his pal, Richard Perle) and all-round slime-ball David Frum; ex-psychiatrist turned Fox news regular and "Israel-can-do-no-wrong" cheerleader Charles Krauthammer; among others. In other words, The Weekly Standard editorial staff is staffed with a concentrated dose of Neocon psychopaths, schizoids, and Israel-first sycophants.

The recent editorial by Hayward, which provides a decent summary of the "unethical behavior, errors, and serial exaggeration in climate science" first exposed by the leak of the Climate Research Unit emails in November, ends with the following prediction:

Paramoralisms, twists and lies are the psychopath's trade: Spiegel interviews Avigdor Lieberman

© Unknown
In a Spiegel interview, Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, 51, discusses his country's controversial settlement policies, the threat posed by Iran's nuclear program and the seeming hopelessness of the conflict with the Palestinians.

Even before he became Israel's foreign minister just under a year ago, Avigdor Lieberman had already established a reputation for his abrasive approach. For example, the former club bouncer, who was born in Moldova and emigrated to Israel in 1978, threatened to bomb the Aswan High Dam in Egypt and publicly stated that he wished President Hosni Mubarek would "go to Hell."

The popularity of Lieberman, with his thick Russian accent, is fueled by two sources: the more than 1 million Israeli immigrants from the former Soviet Union, who support a largely hardline course against the Palestinians; and the Jewish settlers in the West Bank, where Lieberman himself lives.

Defense attorneys say an alleged plot to bomb New York synagogues was hatched and directed by a federal informant.

Lawyers for four men from Newburgh have filed a motion to dismiss the terror indictment against them.

They said the informant badgered the defendants until they got involved in the plot.

They said the informant chose the targets, supplied fake bombs for the synagogues and a fake missile to shoot down planes. The motion said he also offered to pay the defendants, who attorneys alleged weren't inclined toward any crime until the informant began recruiting them.

The government well knew that their case had been a government-inspired creation from day one and that the defendants had not been independently seeking weapons or targets," the motion said.

Display of antagonism: UK to 'expel Mossad operative' over Dubai murder

© UnknownDon't be fooled by this show of 'recrimination' against Israel's murderous practices. British politicians know which side their bread is buttered on
The United Kingdom will expel a senior Israeli diplomat, a Mossad operative, over the use of fake British passports in the terrorist operation against a Hamas commander in Dubai.

Citing Foreign Office sources, Times Online reported Tuesday that Foreign Secretary David Miliband is due to announce the expulsion of the diplomat in a statement to Parliament later today.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman however refused to comment on the reports.

Miliband had earlier called on Israel to provide "full cooperation" to an international investigation into the use of fake passports by the killers of Hamas commander Mahmud al-Mabhuh, who was drugged and suffocated in his hotel room in Dubai on January 19.

Another Irish Bishop admits swearing oath of secrecy to cover up sexual abuse

Another Irish bishop has admitted being involved in an investigation into clerical abuse claims in which victims were made to sign oaths of secrecy.

The Bishop of Clogher, Joseph Duffy, said in a statement that he had been been party to at least one civil settlement involving a claim made against the diocese in which a non-disclosure agreement was signed between the diocese and the claimant.

He told a Sunday newspaper that it was to his "regret" he did not pass on the abuse claims to police when he first became aware of the allegations in 1989.

Bishop Duffy, who was unavailable for comment last night, told the Sunday Business Post he was bound to secrecy by the victim's parents at the time of the offence, but that he would not now be restricted by such a condition.

Arrogant, corrupt, secretive - the Catholic church failed to tackle evil

The cover-up of child sexual abuse by the Catholic church is not about sex and it is not about Catholicism. It is not, as Pope Benedict rightly argued in yesterday's distressingly bland pastoral letter, about priestly celibacy. It is about power.

The urge to prey on children is not confined to the supposedly celibate clergy and exists in all walks of life. We know that it can become systemic in state and voluntary, as well as in religious, institutions. We know that all kinds of organisations - from banks to political movements - can generate a culture of perverted loyalty in which otherwise decent people will collude in crimes "for the greater good".

In none of these respects is the Catholic church unique. What makes it different - and what gives this crisis its depth - is the church's power. It had the authority, indeed the majesty, to compel victims and their families to collude in their own abuse and to keep hideous crimes secret for decades. It is that system of authority that is at the heart of the corruption. And that is why Benedict's pastoral letter, for all its expressions of "shame and remorse", is unable to deal with the central issue. The only adequate response to the crisis is a fundamental questioning of the closed, hierarchical power system of which the pope himself is the apex and the embodiment. It was never remotely likely that Benedict would be able to understand those questions, let alone answer them.

Flashback CIA: What really happened in the quiet French village of Pont-Saint-Esprit in 1951?

A U.S. journalist, who was investigating the Cold War mind-control experiments conducted by the CIA, came across some documents relating to an obscure episode in France that was never elucidated. He alleges that in 1951 the CIA was testing for a secret weapon: the aerosol spraying of LSD. The experiment was reportedly carried out in a French village, whose inhabitants and authorities were kept completely in the dark. But it went wrong and caused the death of 7 people.

We asked Hank Albarelli to provide a summary of his investigation for the readers of Voltaire Network.
On 13 February 2010, French channel 3 broadcast "The Devil’s Bread", a television film by Bertrand Arthuys which meticulously reconstructs the Pont-Saint-Esprit episode. It describes the madness that seized the village, the suspicions surrounding the bread baker and the interest of certain French officials to cover up certain aspects. But it ends with a question mark: sixty years later, the causes of the intoxication still remain a mystery!
For decades now, the seemingly unrelated mysteries of Dr. Frank Olson's strange and alleged "suicide" in New York City in 1953 and the bizarre hallucinogenic outbreak of madness in a small French village in 1951 have independently provoked and perplexed serious investigators. As related in countless accounts on the Internet and in televised news features for the past 35 years, Olson's death has long been suspected to be a government-sponsored murder, but no plausible murderers or motives have ever been positively identified. The outbreak of madness in the village of Pont St. Esprit in southern France has baffled scientists for decades, with many discounting strong suspicions of some sort of covert LSD attack simply because the means and motives were not believed to exist.

In 1995, I began to seriously investigate the death of Dr. Frank Olson, an American bacteriologist at the U.S. Army's top-secret biological warfare center at Fort Detrick, Maryland. Little did I suspect that my discovery that Olson was murdered would collide head on with the horrible events at Pont St. Esprit in August 1951. My 900-page book, A TERRIBLE MISTAKE: The Murder of Frank Olson and the CIA's Secret Cold War Experiments, explains in painstaking detail how the two events collided. Recent reports that "a major diplomatic and political scandal is erupting that could have significant import for French-American relations" over my book's explanation about and documentation of the Pont St. Esprit outbreak causes me to provide an explanation here for those that are curious about the two events.

Catholic Church sex abuse scandals around the world

The Pope's decision to issue a letter to Roman Catholics in Ireland to try to prevent further cases of child abuse by priests follows a wave of sex abuse scandals which have rocked the Church around the world. Here is a round-up of some of those events:

Two major reports into allegations of paedophilia among Irish clergy last year revealed the shocking extent of abuse, cover-ups and hierarchical failings involving thousands of victims, and stretching back decades.

In one, four Dublin archbishops were found to have effectively turned a blind eye to cases of abuse from 1975 to 2004.
