A 17-year-old girl has been arrested after allegedly abusing animals and posting pictures of her acts of cruelty on social networks, Russian media has reported.

A teenager in the city of Khabarovsk, in Russia's Far East, has been arrested for her shocking cruelty to animals, Russia's Life News reported on Thursday. A police source said that one teenager is a suspect and another is a witness in the case, which came to light when one 17-year-old and one 16-year-old girl posted photographs of animal cruelty online and published messages about the crimes. Users of social networks who saw the photographs and conversations reported that the girls claimed to have answered local adverts seeking homes for unwanted animals.

They allegedly told volunteers that they were picking up a dog in order to take it to an elderly woman. After that, they abused it and posted the photos online.

According to Life News, the 17-year-old suspect in the case was arrested at Tolmachevo Airport in Novosibirsk, and has been placed under guard in a children's care facility, having threatened to commit suicide. She has reportedly told investigators that she hears voices which allegedly commanded her to kill dogs.

Comment: Possible, but highly unlikely. Psychopaths tend to fake insanity when they get caught. Judging by this girl's behavior, she not only knew what she was doing - she used cunning and manipulation to get the animals, sadistically tortured the them, showed no remorse, and posted her exploits online. This creature is a menace, and the Russian authorities would do well to treat her accordingly.

The crimes have elicited a horrified reaction from Russian internet users, some of whom set up a Change.org petition urging prosecutors to take serious action against both girls, which has gathered more than 36,000 signatures in less than a week. According to Russian law, the abuse of animals may be punished by up to two years in prison.

Comment: The girls in question are Alina Orlova, 17, and Kristina Konoplya, 16. Loopfy adds more details (warning, links contain highly disturbing photos):
On VKontakte, a popular Russian social media site, the two have publicly denounced all animals, claiming they completely despise such creatures and have vowed to make them suffer. The students are looking for ads in the local media about puppies that are available to adoption. 'Free to good hands' is their favourite type of ad. Putting on their innocent looking appearance, the two have managed to gain the trust of numerous pet owners and rescuers / volunteers who, for various reasons, were unable to keep the pets. Promising to look after them carefully and be their best friend, the girls managed to get ahold of dozens of innocent animals. They all died later in their hands.

...They took the sweet, gentle puppy to an abandoned facility outside the city and hit him with a hammer repeatedly. They later hung the poor animal and shot him, before posting photos on social media, bragging about how much fun they had.

On other occasions, the girls, who study at the Khabarovsk College of Technology, would publicly post photos of their next victim and ask the social media users how they should be ending the animal's life. They made no secret of what they were doing and were actually extremely proud of their actions.
In one photo, a helpless cat is cut in half with a knife, as it has its internal organs removed. In another disturbing scene, a puppy is bashed over the head with a hammer and then hung and shot. ...

She stated that she was innocent and said that the photos on her social media account had been 'photoshopped'. She also closed her Vkontake profile, saying she 'felt loved'. ...

According to local media, Kristina's family has strong ties with the local police force in Khabarovsk and, without doubt, her relatives will be looking to use their influence to get both Kristina and her best friend out of trouble.
