Why is this you may ask?
A) Because scientists do not want to scare anybody. So they tell our news stations "we are safe, asteroids won't hit us." That way they can correlate with today's happy trending news stories of the day. No pressure, safe, happy.
B) Because scientists want to keep their jobs. And the local University lead astronomers need that grant money, so to act like an apocalyptic freak, and tell the cameras that humans are absolutely no safer then the Dinosaurs, is a good reason for the bosses to let go of certain astronomer, because he/she just made a bunch of spoiled little kids at home watching TV get scared and start crying. Ratcheting up Soccer Mom concerns is a good way towards unemployment in this country.
