So many teachers arrived for the class that the gun range was forced to turn many of them away, according to local news station WSOCTV. The Rowan County Wildlife Association hosted the event because of the tragic mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut last year. They said teachers should be armed to protect their students from mass shootings.
"I would be very comfortable having additional opportunities to protect the students, and if it meant carrying a weapon on me I'd do that," said Susan Smith, a teacher's assistant.
The North Carolina legislature is considering legislation that would allow trained volunteers and teachers to carry guns on school campuses.
Following the shooting at Sandy Hook, which left 20 children and 6 adults dead, lawmakers in about two dozen states proposed allowing teachers to carry guns in class. South Dakota became the first state to approve such a law on Friday.
