The Department of Veterans Affairs is spending almost three times as much it did in 2006 on erectile dysfunction drugs, reported Bloomberg News.

That's apparently due to soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan with mental health issues, according to a senior program manager at the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America.

And veterans who have post-traumatic stress disorder are more likely to report erectile dysfunction, as it was a risk factor for both younger and older veterans, according to a study in the Journal of Sexual Medicine.

Monthly prescriptions for such drugs almost doubled in the same time period, from 2.7 million prescriptions in fiscal 2006 to 4.5 million in fiscal 2012.
