A mudslide caused the side of a hill to drop 25 feet Wednesday morning. Homeowner Bettie Keith said she heard the sounds of the trees and telephone poles falling. For months, Keith said the ground has been slowly cracking and she has been talking with Cabell Huntington Hospital representatives.

Engineers surveyed her property two months ago on the hospital's behalf, according to Keith.

Media Relations Manager for Cabell Huntington Hospital, Charles Shumaker, said they have been in contact with homeowners on Holderby Road and have brought engineers to the scene many times. "Obviously, all this changed last night...a bad situation has been made worse," said Shumaker.

While the hospital and homeowners deal with the mudslide on their properties, the City of Huntington is dealing with 14 mudslides.

On Thursday, May 19, 2011, the 1200 block of Enslow Blvd. will be shut down starting at 8:00 a.m. Huntington city workers will clear landslide debris from Four Pole Creek.

According to David Hagley, Director of Public Works, three roads are closed and one road is reduced to one lane because of mudslides in Huntington.

"The mayor has been in contact with the governor's office, trying to see if they can help provide funding," said Hagley. He added the cost of cleaning up mudslides is "a few hundred thousand dollars."

Along with funding, officials said the ground needs to dry and the rains need to slow before proper clean-up can begin.
