Group of small, uninhabited, volcanic islands in the Pacific Ocean, 1,000 km/621 mi off the west coast of Mexico, and part of the Mexican state of Colima. The islands are Clarión, Roca Partida, San Benedicto, and Socorro, which is the largest at 39 km/24mi long, 15 km/9 mi wide, and reaching a height of 1,130 m/3,700 ft. The islands cover an area of 557 sq km/215 sq mi.
In the 1880s Socorro was the site of an Australian-founded sheep station which lasted only a few years, although some sheep still remain on the island. In 1957 an expedition planted timber and fruit on Socorro, but the experiment was unsuccessful.
