Somehow they manage to make the idea of a selfless cooperative society somehow wrong, distasteful or perhaps even evil.

Not selflessly cooperative in a "service to others" sort of context, but instead more along the line of a crushing extermination of individuality.
Maybe its just me, but in my mind, individuality and selfless cooperation in a group is not mutually exclusive.
