Oahu car crash

Heavy rain not only put a damper on some outdoor activities this weekend in Hawaii, on Oahu it also caused problems on the roads Saturday morning.

When the heavy rain came down on the windward side -- problems popped up. Kamehameha Highway near Waikane became waterlogged under several inches of runoff.

When the driver of an SUV came across it, he said he slid out of control and slammed into a guardrail before flipping over.

The crash shut down one lane of the highway -- which was closed for hours, until the SUV was taken away.

At the nearby Waikane Store, customers came in and talked about the crash -- after the road was cleared.

But while cars were creeping along past the accident business was also very slow. "Some people think that a lot of people are going to come in -- because of the slow moving traffic. But usually the opposite happens, our business doesn't do as well under such circumstances," said Alden Tokuzato, with the Waikane Store.

Tokuzato added his business was used to storm related slowdowns.

"When it rains we expect flooding to occur, and that flooding to block traffic -- we usually have a pile up right out here," said Tokuzato.

Other neighbors said nearly every time the heavy rains hit, runoff from overflowing streams ends up pouring onto Kamehameha Highway.

Traffic cleared up on Kamehameha Highway before noon, but at the same time the Pali Lookout was closed while crews cleared a huge tree which had fallen over the entry road because of the heavy rains.
