Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.~ from 'The Second Coming', 1919

Smoking is a personal habit, even though you may also smoke with others. The relationship itself does not depend on smoking together, though it may encourage spending time together. Facebook has become a centralized location where people share their whole lives with one another, without having to make the effort to speak to a specific person that you know. This type of service's success depends on sheer numbers of social contacts that use it. Until a critical mass of people find a different venue that provides the same services, or Facebook alienates its userbase entirely, this will not change. You literally have to give up a significant amount of sharing and communication from the people you love by leaving Facebook, unless you can convince them ALL to move their online sharing somewhere else.
