Pennsylvania sightings summary for the first three months, ending March 31st - 4/13/2009

During the first quarter of 2009, the Mutual UFO Network (Mufon) had received a total of 58 sightings reports from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Of the 58 total sightings reported to the center, 50 have been completed by state Mufon field investigators, with eight still under investigation. After completing a thorough investigation, the field investigator reaches a conclusion as to the appropriate classification of the reported sighting. The respective classifications include: Unknown - meaning that the sighting did not fall into the explanation of being either man-made in origin, a weather/atmospheric anomaly, or an observation of a natural celestial object; Identified flying object - meaning that the object is a conventional type of aircraft (i.e. airplane, helicopter, blimp, balloon, etc.); Insufficient data - meaning that there wasn't enough information available from the report to be able to reach a reasonable conclusion; and finally, a hoax.

The following is the breakdown, by case classification, of the final dispositions as determined by the assigned field investigators: Unknown - 19; Identified flying object - 8; Insufficient data -21; Hoax - 2. Of the 19 cases classified as unknown, the following are descriptions of the objects observed: Disk, oval-shaped - 3; Slow moving objects - 2; Circle - 2; Star-like - 4; Square/rectangular - 1; Diamond-shaped - 1; Triangle - 1; Fireball, sphere, star-like - 1.

Luzerne County, Pennsylvania - 4/12/2009

Witness was standing in his yard when he noticed a strange object approaching him. He claimed that the object moved very slowly, and appeared to be floating. The witness did not detect any sound as the object passed over where he was standing. He ran to the other side of the house and saw the object climb rapidly then circle around his house before disappearing totally. The witness described that he felt as though he was being watched throughout the entire incident.

Austin, Texas - 4/12/2009

Two witnesses were driving south on highway 45 when they noticed what they described as a circular donut-shaped light (with fluorescent-like quality of color) that was observed rising from lower than the horizon, to about rooftop level with nearby houses. The object would twist and turn almost like a kite, then disappear, only to immediately re-appear low on the horizon again. One witness described the object emitting a "tesla coil-like sound" that varied with the brightness of the object. As the object would rise and get brighter, the sound would intensify. Then, approximately five minutes into the sighting, the witness noticed what appeared to be a second trailing ruby-red light flashing intermittently about every 30 seconds, always a uniform distance below, and to the left of the donut-circle of light. The light appeared to the east-southeast from their position and seemed to rise and mix into the clouds which would then partially obscure the object. It maintained the same distance from the witness' position as it rose in altitude. After about ten minutes, the object disappeared low on the horizon and did not re-appear.
