Look at the projects on your plate, and ask which make you feel the least comfortable. You'll usually find these projects are extraordinarily valuable, and that your aversion is caused by the fact that they're difficult, frustrating, and ambiguous. While these feelings are uncomfortable, they are precisely what make certain experiences valuable.
Similarly, think of the conversations you've been meaning to have at work and at home. The ones you're most averse to are probably the most important. The same goes for DIY projects you're avoiding; emails left unanswered in your inbox; and books you've been meaning to read, but have been too intimidated to start.
Anyone can do easy tasks, but few want to do ones that make them uncomfortable. By running towards discomfort, instead of away from it, you do what others don't want to-and as a result, deliver unique value. This gives you a leg up on others who don't want to do the work.
The other day, I finished The Defiant Ones, a four-part documentary series about the rise of Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine. They're the two renowned record producers who co-founded Beats by Dre and now run Apple Music. In the documentary, Jimmy tells the fascinating story of how he started out. I love this story.
After dropping out of college, Iovine got a job cleaning in a record studio. One Easter, he was called into work on his day off (the other cleaner was apparently sick). When he arrived at the studio, he realized the story of his co-worker calling in sick was a fabrication. He didn't get the call so he could clean-instead, sitting in the studio was John Lennon. Iovine's boss called him just to see if he'd come in on a holiday weekend. Iovine helped produce that album-and later went on to produce albums by Bruce Springsteen, Lady Gaga, U2, Gwen Stefani, and countless others.
Something Iovine said in the documentary stood out to me: when you get beyond your discomforts and fears, your fear eventually becomes a tailwind, instead of a headwind. It propels you forward in your chase, until you eventually get in front of that discomfort. You do the hard things, produce more value, and, at the end of the day, accomplish more because you do what everyone else is avoiding.
Ray Dalio echoes this same idea in his book, Principles (which I wrote about last week). Instead of getting frustrated and overwhelmed by pain and discomfort, he began to see these feelings as "nature's reminder that there is something important to learn." He goes on to call reflecting on pain and discomfort the most valuable habit he's acquired.
Chasing discomfort, pain, and fear may end up being the most important habit you acquire. It's a sign you're onto something important.

When I graduated University a while back, I received a few full-time job offers, but decided to decline them to dedicate a full year of my life to exploring my weird passion: productivity. For a full year I did anything and everything to become more productive. That included conducting dozens of productivity experiments on myself, like living in total isolation for 10 days, only using my smartphone for an hour a day, waking up at 5:30am every morning, and working 90-hour weeks. Today, I'm on a mission to share my more human approach to productivity on this blog, in my talks, and in my book The Productivity Project.
- Signed up for a long run and training towards it when I can. Never really 'ran' before. Main challenging things about it are running in the cold/wet, overcoming fatigue, encountering psychological blocks to pushing on.
- Changed jobs... new job a step up in a different company that involves some travel here and there. Challenging indeed and a definite step away from previous comforts of what I knew.
- Decided to go head on against my addiction. Interesting but making massive strides.
- Out of all things and don't laugh , decided to learn to drive cars with manual transmission.
All these since the turn of the year, 4 weeks into the new regime.
Cheat codes I'm using:
- First and foremost, on top of my list, sound therapy. Don't know what it does exactly but rewires your brain at least temporary so that it's not so hard to do things.
- Running with others as opposed to oneself.
- Jobwise, well you just gotta do it out of necessity.
- Addiction wise, mostly just being busy but adopting a stalking strategy - accepting you have a problem or to be more precise, the problem has you. So you gotta inch back control and self determination strategically which at the beginning means strategically feeding the wolf, not so much that it's a feast but just enough that it's the bare minimum and spacing out the time, consolidating on that to shatter the previous foundation i.e. to build a newer but weaker foundation which you can employ the same strategy on progressively until hopefully there's nothing left. In addition you have to be pushing yourself on other fronts, taking on new challenges and/or responsibilities.
Now focusing on general consolidation and maintaining gains before pushing on further.
A while back, Atreides when he went through the flurry of writing said something about... whenever you are depressed and wallow, finish off your wallowing by saying 'and I like it that way' or something to that effect. Well... tell you what. NO I DON'T LIKE IT THAT WAY.
