Perhaps only people who are capable of real togetherness have that look of being alone in the universe. The others have a certain stickiness, they stick to the mass.

It's rather simple really, same as was the man. He had charisma, sort of a Northern or Plains type of Southern good ole boy. All the rest is PR which any well trained marketing dept can achieve with a controlled press. Think of him as a reasonable John Wayne, a boy-next-door type from that era suitable for politics, otherwise he'd be more like Marilyn Monroe... yes, because the male lead can't be 'pretty', but given the times, has to be 'respectable', seen as 'a hard worker', blah, blah, blah.... he had
the personality for the job even if he didn't have the brains, experience (which can be marketed with a frameup tour-of-duty as governor of California... sound familar? compare to BUsh Jr. in Texas) and people skills.... ie, an easy smile and 'ah-shucks-maam' 'down home humor'. He had charisma like Marilyn, who, whether you cared for her work or not, had undeniable likeability... that is a quotient that is tracked and studied in all market analysis.... the 'pop' polls such as found in Hollywood to determine box office sales potential. You couldn't help but like Reagan, same as Marilyn, though that doesn't mean you could trust him, respect his opinions (the ole trickle down that continues to this day), policies or as he got older and the Alzheimer's showed through... the inconsistencies in his stories .... and his acting experience was well used in front of the press and cameras as they couldn't help but like the guy as well.... not so much as a group, but one-on-one, which is where the charisma factor in politics is best demonstrated for manipulation of the public. He didn't need to know what he was doing, and he seemed not to care much with his 'hands-off' style of delegation of authority... same as Bush Jr..... another 'useful idiot'. THey don't need do anything, quite the contrary, plans would and do go astray with they 'wake up' at all and start to think they actually run the show. They are useful puppets, and Reagan was a wonderful puppet.... starting his that desire to get ahead... not in acting as that charisma factor wasn't used well on film, it's always best in person, so you can't compare the illusion to the reality... you don't get the 'love' factor at a distance... but he got a taste of power in the union and then helping the FBI during that ole McCarthy era BS and from there, he was seen as useful and put on the corporate shelf for later possible use... these days, I'm sure he'd be asked to join the the same clubs George Clooney has been invited to. Hollywood was just the opening act.... 'out-town-tryouts' for the Reagan machine.... which can be utilized for any 'charismatic' puppet that shows promise.
He wasn't 'perfect' for most parts in Hollywood, but was for those parts in politics, especially DC, or East Hollywood with their award ceremonies ie elections. IMO, to understand Reagan, you have to understand his handlers, as Ron seemed like any other actor reading his lines, playing his part as directed to. He actually seemed to BELIEVE the lines given him... isn't that the best kind of 'useful idiot'? All his handlers need do was to prevent Reagan from gaining access to the truth, and handlers such as the CIA are great at doing just that. Reagans' childish beliefs in govt, church and state, rights etc made it easy to manipulate him and most puppets fall into this same category. Ignorance is easily protected, knowledge is the real threat, so just keep your 'package' away from 'dangerous' people, events etc. Keep your package away from the truth or anyone/thing that might allow it in.
Coincidental that he ended up with Alzheimers'? Seem symbolic, doesn't it? It. almost seemed like he might have been 'waking up' a little, so an assassin shows up.... reminds me of John Paul 2... implement the control protocol, and the puppet returns to sleep mode and the handlers resume complete control... essentially, though near the end with Gorbachev, you wonder if he was 'seeing the light' at least a little there, but by then, his handlers could use the disease card to encourage him to let them handle things he isn't capable of dealing with.... and his self-doubt would let them.
