Toowoomba residents unfortunate enough to be caught outdoors yesterday were battered with cold winds reaching speeds of up to 56kmh.

Temperatures dropped to a low of 3.1 degrees while fresh winds brought the apparent temperature to a chilly -4.7 degrees.

Oakey had the coldest recorded temperature on the Darling Downs yesterday with a low of 1.3 degrees, although the winds were not as strong as they were in Toowoomba.

Oakey's apparent temperature reached a low of -3.7 degrees.

Toowoomba gardener Steve Ratcliffe from Rattyz Garden Maintenance said winter was a bad time to hold an outdoor job in Toowoomba.

"You never really get used to it," Mr Ratcliffe said about the cold weather. You just gotta rug up and tough it out."

Mr Ratcliffe said he was thankful his work day didn't start earlier than 8am as morning dew made it hard to start work in the garden during the early hours of a cold morning.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Michael Knepp said Toowoomba residents could expect similar weather conditions to yesterday over the next few days.

"The strong winds will continue, although yesterday was probably around as strong as it will get this week," Mr Knepp said.

"The next few days should be fine with cool mornings and winds will make it feel colder than it is."

Mr Knepp said temperatures in Toowoomba should range from a minimum of three or four degrees to a maximum between 14 and 17 degrees over the next few days.
