Port of Spain - A mud volcano erupted in an oilfield area in Santa Flora, Trinidad Sunday, shocking area residents.

Trinidad Newsday reports that the mud volcano shot muck several feet into the air from two large craters lying in close proximity to a pumping jack in the Los Bajos Field located at Francis Trace.

Residents tell the paper they were awoken at 2 a.m. yesterday by 'a loud rumble and later discovered that a flat piece of grassy land on which they had walked and played the day before had been transformed into two mud volcanoes.' No one was injured but authorities moved to evacuate residents close to the area.

According to the Geological Society of Trinidad and Tobago, mud volcanoes are associated with quietly or explosively escaping methane gas.
