He may be the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, but those credentials were not enough to get him through the doors of a smart Nicosia night club this week.

After a hard day's diplomacy, followed by a few drinks with friends at the Corner Pub, Mirek Topolanek and his entourage decided to move onto a club, but the bouncer refused them entry after a "face control" test.

According to a report in Machi newspaper, the bouncer laughed-off Mr Topolaneks claim that he was the Czech Prime Minister and blocked the entrance to the club, thinking the party were playing a practical joke on him.

The charade went on for some time before the club owner was notified and finally let the party enter.

Topolanek is on an official visit to Cyprus.
