fireball
The fireball was seen from many different areas of Cork last night

An unusual sight was spotted in Cork skies last night when a meteorite was filmed blazing through the sky before it had even gone dark.

Footage shared on Twitter last night shows the fireball blasting across the Cork skyline while it was still bright.

The video was taken in Ballinhassig at around 9:26pm with experts saying it would be unusual for it to be a meteorite so early in the night.

At first he team from Blackrock Castle Observatory seemed a little doubtful that it was a meteorite saying on Twitter "It's certainly possible. It seems very early for it to be quite so visible though."

However the experts then said that all though they couldn't be sure, it did appear that the fireball spotted in the sky was in fact a meteorite.

"We've had a number of reports of this object now. My best guess (Our astronomer is on leave today) would be a fireball. Basically a meteorite burning up in the atmosphere. Very cool capture!".
