Garry Wilkinson captured the impressive photo last night to the south-west of Toowoomba.
The photo shows dark clouds looming over the city.
He snapped his photo from Glenvale just at the moment a huge bolt of lightning struck close to homes.
The Bureau of Meteorology had warned yesterday that storms could hit the city, but they bypassed Toowoomba, bringing hail to the east including Brisbane and Kilcoy.
Heavy rain did fall in parts of the city late last night.
The bureau's official gauge near Toowoomba Airport did not record any rain but wind gusts of up to 43kmh were recorded.
Today the bureau is forecasting partly cloudy weather with a high (80%) chance of showers, most likely during this afternoon and evening.
There is also a chance of a thunderstorm, most likely during this afternoon and evening, possibly severe.
Winds will be westerly 25 to 30kmh tending northwesterly 25 to 35kmh early in the morning then tending northerly 20 to 30kmh in the middle of the day.
Mr Wilkinson used a lightning trigger, which automatically takes photos when it senses a sudden increase in light.
"I usually expose for about one second, depending on the frequency of the lightning."
He captured the photo on his Nikkon D750 SLR about 9.10pm.
"I wouldn't have liked to be under that one, it was a fairly massive discharge."
