A young man was severely injured in an explosion in New York's Central Park, in which "his left leg [was] blown off," according to reports from the scene.

Emergency services were filmed at the scene along with a reported bomb squad and the NYPD counter-terrorism unit.

Journalist Sarah Maslin Nir reported running to the scene after hearing a "huge" explosion to find "a young man with his left leg blown off."

A call reporting a possible explosion came in at 10:53 am local time, according to FDNY, and the victim was found with a "partial amputation," reports PIX11 News.

Multiple eye witnesses reported seeing the man climb down from a rock structure and stepping on something that "exploded."

While other reports suggest a firework may have been to blame for the blast.

According to Maslin Nir, the young man was taken away by paramedics and the definite cause of the explosion is still unconfirmed.

The "explosion" coincidentally happened near the funeral for Elie Wiesel, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and Holocaust survivor.
