A young family holidaying in Port Douglas had the shock of a lifetime when they discovered a night snake sleeping beneath their two-year-old daughter's feet in her stroller.

Lauren Bailey, from NSW, was enjoying a walk with her children Max, 4, and Isla, 2.

They were staying in an apartment and the stroller had been parked in the stairwell overnight when the snake apparently decided to curl up for a rest.

Ms Bailey said the family had been out walking on Macrossan St for about half an hour and checking out the local stores when they stopped for ice cream.

"The snake was hidden underneath a clear rain cover for the stroller, and my daughter had her feet on top of that," she said.

"I had also taken the pump out of the bottom of the stroller, so I had my hand right next to it and sat down next to it to pump up the tyres.

"We stopped to buy an ice cream, I took the kids out of the stroller and the sky started to sprinkle so I took out the rain cover and saw the snake sitting right there.

"I thought it was a toy at first and asked a couple sitting nearby to have a look they shook the pram and told me that it was moving.

"As I couldn't get to my phone because it was in the stroller next to the snake, I went into Flight Centre to ask for help and the staff there were awesome."

The staff called the Wildlife Habitat immediately and told Ms Bailey she could wait in the shop with her children until help arrived.

About 10 minutes later a handler arrived and the snake was removed in front of a small crowd.

"Isla kept exclaiming to people nearby 'snake in our stroller'," Ms Bailey said.

"I was told the snake was a night tiger, which is mildly venomous for adults but more dangerous for kids.

"Isla is tiny and wouldn't even weigh 10kg so thank goodness she wasn't bitten."

The story had a happy ending, though. No one was hurt and the children were brave.

"I've had a couple of nightmares about it since, but the kids have been fine," Ms Bailey said. "Isla kept reassuring me afterwards by telling me that 'It's okay mummy, police man took snake away'."
