Awful weather conditions have returned to Poland, with frozen roads and railway lines. More than 20,000 people in Pomerania are without electricity after power lines snapped under the weight of ice.

Several roofs have collapsed under the snow.

Moscow has been hit with freezing rain which has made roads and pavements dangerously slippery.

It has also caused traffic chaos, with 2000 kilometres of traffic jams reported around the capital as people try to go shopping for next weekend's Orthodox Christmas.

On the Danish island of Bornholm in the Baltic sea one wonders why people are bothering to dig out their cars, as so much snow has fallen the authorities have given up clearing the roads. Wind has created huge snowdrifts, and three people have been reported missing. Most of Denmark has been hit, and the army has been mobilised to help.

Heavy snow in northern France had led to the second highest state of alert being broadcast. Several towns were cut off with impassable roads, and people had to wait until late on Saturday before tractors equipped with snowploughs came to try and force a passage. Flights were cancelled at Paris's two main airports.

In Italy it is rain causing the problems, with several villages in northern Tuscany cut off as roads were swept away in mudslides. Some 150 people are stranded and awaiting help.
