Best of the Web: Putin says West trying to contain formation of multipolar world by activating old conflicts

putin
FILE PHOTO:
Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday that the West is trying to contain the formation of a multipolar world by activating old conflicts to preserve its hegemony.

Speaking at the 2022 Moscow Conference on International Security, Putin said the Western countries are striving to hold the countries and peoples in chains of the neocolonial order.

"Their (Western) hegemony means stagnation for the whole world, for the whole civilization, (it means) obscurantism, the abolition of culture, and neoliberal totalitarianism," he said.

In an attempt to preserve their domination, the US and its allies rudely interfere in the internal affairs of the countries, organize coups, civil wars, provocations, use blackmail, and pressure to subdue states to its will, Putin added.

"In these conditions, we have decided to conduct a special military operation in Ukraine in full compliance with the UN Charter.

Best of the Web: Betelgeuse blew its top in 'never seen before behavior of a normal star', NASA finds it 'bouncing' during its recovery

Betelgeuse
© Elizabeth Wheatley
Analyzing data from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope and several other observatories, astronomers have concluded that the bright red supergiant star Betelgeuse quite literally blew its top in 2019, losing a substantial part of its visible surface and producing a gigantic Surface Mass Ejection (SME). This is something never before seen in a normal star's behavior.

Our Sun routinely blows off parts of its tenuous outer atmosphere, the corona, in an event known as a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME). But the Betelgeuse SME blasted off 400 billion times as much mass as a typical CME!

Best of the Web: How Britain fueled Ukraine's war machine and invited direct conflict with Russia

soldiers
© unknownUK Chief of the General Staff Gen. Patrick Sanders visited Ukrainian soldiers training in the UK July 2022
Britain has played a key role in NATO forward troop deployments and training exercises on Russia's borders. With war underway, the UK sends billions in arms, special forces, and volunteers to ensure escalation.

In an effort to evade his domestic woes, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson — who may soon be replaced — has spent much time toing and froing to Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has described the buffoonish British PM as one of Ukraine's closest allies. If and when Johnson leaves office, he is tipped for a role as Ukraine Envoy.

The Johnson-Zelenskyy relationship contrasts sharply with Zelenskyy's experiences with French President Emmanuel Macron, who has warned the European Union (EU) and the US not to "humiliate" Russian President Putin and instead to seek diplomatic over military solutions to the conflict.

But Johnson's pastiche of Churchillian resolve has deeper roots in the Anglo-American alliance when it comes to Ukraine, and is heavily informed by Britain's membership of the US-led North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). His impulses are also dictated by Britain's post-World War Two-era role in the global order: to serve the interests of the US state. From 2015 to this year, the UK has trained over 22,000 Ukrainian military personnel as part of the Maritime Training Initiative and Operation Orbital.

Best of the Web: Lies, Damned Lies, & The January 6 Committee

The Select Committee to Investigate January 6 has adjourned for a well-deserved summer break. Misleading the public is exhausting work.

A careful review of the official transcripts of its eight long hearings shows the committee repeatedly made connections that weren't there, took events and quotes out of context, exaggerated the violence of the Capitol rioters, and omitted key exculpatory evidence otherwise absolving former President Donald Trump of guilt. While in some cases it lied by omission, in others it lied outright. It also made a number of unsubstantiated charges based on the secondhand accounts — hearsay testimony — of a young witness with serious credibility problems.

These weren't off-the-cuff remarks. Panelists didn't misspeak. Their statements were tightly scripted and loaded into teleprompters, which they read from verbatim.

Best of the Web: Alex Jones, Cass Sunstein, and "Cognitive Infiltration"

Alex Jones, Cass Sunstein
Late last week a Texas jury ordered Alex Jones to pay nearly $50 million in compensatory and punitive damages to the parents of a child killed in the Sandy Hook shootings, with two more trials still scheduled. These awards may be sharply reduced, but if they are not, the result will probably mean the destruction of Jones' media empire.

For decades Jones has been one of America's most prominent conspiracy theorists, and although I've never watched his show nor scarcely ever visited his website, under ordinary circumstances I would be quite sympathetic to his plight, given the tremendous record of dishonesty by his arch-enemies in the mainstream media.

From what I've read, Jones came to major national prominence in the early 2000s when he became a leading skeptic of the official 9/11 narrative, widely promoting public criticism of that official fairy tale when no one in the mainstream media and even few alternative journalists were willing to do so. I myself only became aware of these issues long afterward, and if I'd been listening to Jones at the time I would have learned some important facts years earlier.

Comment: While the author raises some good points about Cass Sunstein's approach to Psy-ops, and we agree with several of the author's insights about some Covid disinformation, he clearly misses some other rather crucial points around the subject.

Best of the Web: Moscow slams West's hypocrisy over Ukrainian grain, which is going to EU, not Africa

Not a single ship with Ukrainian grain has reached starving African or Asian countries, the Russian foreign ministry said

Russia's Foreign Ministry has expressed doubt about the sincerity of Western countries' global food security concerns, noting that grain-loaded ships from Ukrainian Black Sea ports are mostly heading to the West, rather than to starving African or Asian countries.

Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday, Ivan Nechaev, the deputy director of the ministry's information and press department, said that "so far not a single ship with grain has reached the shores of the starving countries of Africa or South Asia."

"They go mainly to Western ports, and the range of exported goods is mainly not wheat, but corn grain and sunflower oil, which casts doubt on the sincerity of these voices in the West that world food security depends on the 'grain deal'," Nechaev said, referring to the recent deal between Moscow and Kiev which allowed the resumption of grain exports from Ukrainian ports.

Best of the Web: The Six Degrees of Evil Kevin Bacon

six degrees kevin bacon boxer shorts
One of the biggest stumbling blocks to understanding the nature of human evil is the tendency to think everyone is the same: like you. Reading some of the socialist philosophers of past centuries, one can't help but smile at their quaint oversimplifications of human nature and naive utopianism.1 If only we could eliminate all private property, break the parent-child bond, and (in many socialist utopias) just share each other's wives (or better, get rid of "oppressive" marriage and just make women communal sexual property),2 well, then everything would be golden. All the world's evils would disappear (or at least be easily dealt with). Everyone would live in harmony, thinking the right thoughts (because parents and priests would have no influence on the children) and sharing all in a brotherhood of man (well, there might be a few holdovers who refuse to give up the old ways, but there's always slavery or death for them). Treat everyone the same, and everyone will turn out the same — the way we want them to.

It's kind of difficult to grok how men so seemingly intelligent could have been so profoundly stupid. It's like the story of Aristotle (probably apocryphal, but who knows), apparently convinced until the time of his death that men had more teeth than women. As Bertrand Russell once quipped, he could have cleared up this misconception very easily by simply asking his wife to open her mouth. You don't need to have had children to see it, but for those who have it's obvious that even from a young age, the same tricks don't work on everyone. There's a very simple reason: people are different. Some are so rebellious that even a heavy hand won't dissuade them from causing trouble; others so compliant that even the hint of a criticism is enough to change their behavior and inspire a lifetime of neurosis.

Dr. Ute Kruger
We have a problem.

Note:
This is written in honor of a dear family friend who pulled through her recent cancer with flying colors.

I hate the title of this post, but there was no other title for this post. We're at the point where information is coming through fast and furious, and while that helps push us to that tipping point we're all working towards, it comes with so much pain and suffering.

Chief of Pathology

Dr. Ute Kruger is a researcher and senior physician at Lunds University in Sweden. She's the Chief of Pathology, a field that she's worked in for the last 25 years, with a specialty in breast cancer diagnosis for the past 18 years. She's studied thousands of autopsies and breast cancer samples. She's extremely familiar with the industry and patient age, tumor size, and malignancy grade are all within her field of expertise and have had a natural rhythm throughout her career. That natural rhythm came to a halt in 2021 once the vaccine rollout began.

Best of the Web: Up to a foot of rain in less than 12 hours slams Illinois, another exceptional deluge

Illinois gets a foot of rain
Illinois gets a foot of rain
If it seems like a barrage of extreme rain events has been wreaking havoc across the country over the past week, you're not imagining things. The latest resulted from an overnight deluge in central and southeastern Illinois, with some areas registering 8 to 12 inches of rain in less than 12 hours.

It's the third 1-in-1,000-year rain event in the Lower 48 states in about a week.

The National Weather Service office in Lincoln, Ill., has received about 20 reports of flooding, mostly due to water inundating roads and intersections. Television affiliate WAND in Decatur, which is about 35 miles east of Springfield, reported cars submerged in high water with emergency crews involved in rescues. Minor flooding of several rivers has also occurred.

Flash-flood warnings have affected a large swath of central and southern Illinois from around Springfield to southeast of Effingham. That's where months' worth of rain has fallen because of a parade of thunderstorms. Many of them were "training" or repeatedly moving over the same neighborhoods.
