Several rivers have burst their banks in North Queensland after a 4 days of heavy rain. Many areas have recorded 500 to 700 mm of rain during that time. This is the fourth serious flood event in the state in the last 2 weeks.

Australia's Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) said that the "flood situation has seen communities isolated, schools closed and highways cut, with overall flood impacts comparable to the February 2009 flood event."

A disaster declaration was issued on 09 March for the Hinchinbrook Shire Council Local Government area following flooding which has impacted homes and roads around Ingham and Halifax.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) swift-water crews were involved in two rescues in Halifax and Ingham.

Over 70 school children have been left stranded at an adventure camp site near Tully.

Catastrophe has hit the region's coastline with the fallout of the big freeze culling thousands of birds, scores of sea creatures and even a few seals.

Thousands of starfish, crabs, fish and sea birds have washed up dead in the wake of the Beast from the East - and experts are warning this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Shocking photographs revealing the sheer scale of the deaths on Suffolk and Essex beaches have emerged - with witnesses likening shorelines to graveyards.

Wildlife specialists believe last week's arctic blast froze food supplies for several species of sea bird and they flew to England to escape - only to find the Beast had followed them.

Suffolk-based naturalist Steve Piotrowski said: "It's a pretty drastic scene for wildlife and this is only the tip of the iceberg.

Dead gray whale found on Angel Island beach in California

dead whale
The body of a dead whale washed up on the shore of Sand Springs Beach at Angel Island State Park sometime Wednesday.

A team of eight scientists from the Marine Mammal Center, the California Academy of Sciences and UC Davis confirmed Thursday the cetacean is a 28-foot juvenile male gray whale.

The team performed a necropsy that revealed a significant lack of muscle tissue and blubber and they concludedthe whale died of severe malnutrition.

"This particular gray whale was likely in its first year of foraging on its own in the wild, and it's unknown whether this juvenile was following a food source into San Francisco Bay prior to its death," Dr. Padraig Duignan, chief research pathologist at the Marine Mammal Center said in a statement.

'One of the rarest clouds ever' forms over Nevada sky

Rare horseshoe cloud
© Weather Nation
It is called a horseshoe cloud... Because, well, it's shaped like a horseshoe.

Christy Grimes caught a glimpse of what the National Weather Service calls "one of the rarest clouds ever."

Grimes shot the photos near Battle Mountain Thursday and sent them to the National Weather Service office in Elko, Nevada.

So, with it being one of the rarest clouds, everyone is stuck wondering how the clouds form.

The Elko National Weather Service office gave this great explanation:
"An updraft pushes flattish cumulus clouds up and a horizontal vortex develops from differential updraft speeds.

As the vortex climbs, it gets caught in the faster horizontal winds aloft, and the middle part of the vortex catches the faster speeds with the ends being slower.

The result is that the center of the vortex pulls out ahead. Various time lapses can be found online."
So, if you ever see a horseshoe cloud, make sure to snap a photo, because you're one of the lucky ones.
