Analysts say EU carbon tax more about political wrangling and increasing revenue than tackling climate change

The new European Commission president has been trying to make fighting climate change the hallmark of her presidency. However, her proposals could further split the bloc and backfire, hurting the EU itself, analysts believe.

Since taking office in December, Ursula von der Leyen has been pushing for the Green Deal, aiming to make Europe the "world's first climate-neutral continent by 2050." The approach includes tax on imports from non-EU countries with less-strict ecological rules. By doing this, Brussels claims it wants to prevent so-called carbon leakage, so importers from countries with "lower ambition for emission reduction" do not benefit from European producers abiding by strict green rules.

However, the move could be more about raising tax revenue for the EU and gaining political leverage than climate change, according to Richard Werner, university professor in banking and finance at Linacre College, Oxford. While the tax may not be implemented for many years, von der Leyen may currently use her warnings as part of the trade war between China and the US, he noted.

The green economy is the new black at Davos 2020

corn in snow
Green is the buzzword of the day. And it seems everywhere you turn today there are only two topics that matter โ€” Climate Change and impeaching Donald Trump.

Everything else has been put on the back burner, so to speak.

The annual convocation of oiligarchs known as Davos is underway and all that the dutiful media would report on was the intense focus on climate change.

President Trump, for his part, came into that room and did what he always does, step on the metaphoric duck and draw the ire of the globalist glitterati.

But nothing Trump said landed with any weight because The Davos Crowd is in the process of getting rid of America's Loki anyway.

The Green economy is being touted by everyone now. It was one thing when it began with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her insipid Green New Deal. When it was just her and the Justice Democrats pushing this it could be dismissed as a silly tactic to push the Democratic Party in the U.S. unacceptably left by a bunch of malcontent Bernie Bros.

But when it's every major central banker in the world, including heads of major Federal Reserve Banks, it is quite another. When Greta Thunberg is speaking at both the United Nations and Davos, you know this is official policy.

Putin calls for a new system guided by the UN Charter... But is it possible?

Putin and FDR
Anyone looking with sober eyes upon today's world and the feeble economic and geopolitical underpinnings holding the system together must accept the fact that a new system WILL be created.

This is not an opinion, but a fact. We are moving towards eight billion lives on this globe and the means of productive powers to sustain that growing population (at least in the west) has been permitted to decay terribly over the recent half century while monetary values have grown like a hyperinflationary cancer to unimaginable proportions. Derivatives speculation alone under the deregulated "too big to fail" banking system has resulted in over $1.5 quadrillion in nominal values which have ZERO connection to the real world (GDP globally barely accounts for $80 trillion). Over the past 5 months $415 billion of QE bailouts have been released into the bankrupt banks to prevent a collapse. So, economically it's foundation of sand.

Militarily, the west has followed the earlier Roman empire of yesteryear by overextending itself beyond capacity creating situations of global turmoil, death and unbounded resentment at the dominant Anglo American powers controlling NATO and the Military industrial complex. The recent near-war with Iran at the start of 2020 put the world on a fast track towards a nuclear war with Iran's allies Russia and China.

'Once in a lifetime opportunity for Israel': Netanyahu to join Trump in unveiling 'deal of the century' - Palestine not invited

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu and his rival Benny Gantz are to meet US President Donald Trump to finally unveil the 'deal of the century' peace plan. No Palestinian representative was invited, and a sovereign state looks unlikely.

"An opportunity like this comes once in history and cannot be missed," Netanyahu gushed as he accepted Trump's invitation to the White House on Saturday, praising the American as "the greatest friend that Israel has ever had." He boasted he would be "leaving for Washington with a sense of great mission, great responsibility and great opportunity - which will not recur - to ensure the future of Israel."

The latter part of the statement seemed clearly directed at Gantz and the voters Netanyahu has to convince that he is the only one who can secure Israel's future when he squares off against his rival in an unprecedented third election later this year. Beset by bribery and corruption charges, Netanyahu has repeatedly failed to form a government after the coalition led by his Likud party twice deadlocked with that of Gantz's Kahol Lavan party. The longest-serving PM in Israeli history has promised to annex the Jordan Valley and taken credit for various pro-Israel moves by the Trump administration, including recognizing Israel's occupation of the Golan Heights - illegal under international law - and moving the US embassy to Jerusalem.

The Democrats: Impeachment folly, Biden and the party's coming funeral

house impeachment articles senate parade
© Win McNamee/Getty ImagesArticles of Impeachment against U.S. President Donald Trump are formally carried through the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol by officials from the U.S. House of Representatives to the U.S. Senate on January 15, 2020 in Washington, DC.
As they like to say in the horror movie trailers: It... begins...! (Cue bassoons and waterphones.)

If last Wednesday's solemn and prayerful parade through the Capitol rotunda was the Democratic Party's funeral march, then impeachment starting this week may be the burial service. Central casting couldn't have found a more perfect funeral director than the grave and genteel Mitch McConnell.

Of course, the Democrats have been screeching for new witnesses because Adam Schiff (D-CA) muffed his due diligence on the House side. The tactical fallback, courtesy of Lawfare, is to provoke a legal pissing match over executive privilege, which they hope to turn into a campaign ploy in the months ahead: Trump concealed the truth! This time, though, I doubt the Senate rules will give them a chance to run option plays from the Brett Kavanaugh playbook, flooding the end zone with obvious geeks and bottom-feeders of the Michael Avenatti species.

And, naturally, the witness question beats a path directly to the Bidens. Open that door and there is really nothing on God's green earth that will keep Hunter B out of the witness chair. In which case he will have to reiterate what he said in a TV interview a few months back โ€” they'll play the recording in-session โ€” which is that he got the $83-K-a-month do-nothing gig on the Burisma board-of-directors because he was the Vice-president's son. Or he can change his story and cast himself as a liar. It would not be necessary to call Joe Biden, just submit in evidence that recording of him bragging on how he strong-armed the Ukrainians to shut down their Burisma investigation by threatening to withhold a billion-dollar aid-and-loan package. Hmmmm. Sounds suspiciously like what Mr. Trump is accused of, absent evidence.

WikiLeaks editor: US says First Amendment doesn't apply to foreigners in Assange case

WikiLeaks editor-in-chief Kristinn Hrafnsson gave a brief statement to the press after the latest court hearing for Julian Assange's extradition case in London today, saying the Trump administration is arguing that the First Amendment of the US Constitution doesn't provide press freedom protection to foreign nationals like Assange.

"We have now learned from submissions and affidavits presented by the United States to this court that they do not consider foreign nationals to have a First Amendment protection," Hrafnsson said.

"Now let that sink in for a second," Hrafnsson continued.
"At the same time that the US government is chasing journalists all over the world, they claim they have extra-territorial reach, they have decided that all foreign journalists which include many of you here, have no protection under the First Amendment of the United States. So that goes to show the gravity of this case. This is not about Julian Assange, it's about press freedom."

Michael Bloomberg's crew of 'journalists' propagandize for more US aggression

This will be exposing typical U.S.-regime propaganda. That's propaganda favoring U.S. imperialism, which actually violates the intentions of America's Founders, and the spirit of the U.S. Constitution.

The U.S. regime's propaganda doesn't come from the Government directly, but instead from the 607 billionaires who control the regime, via their corrupt control over the successful politicians (in both Parties), financing their careers, and by their owning (and otherwise controlling) the regime's 'news'-media, which are privately owned and which carry the same propaganda as the Government's 'publicly owned' 'news'-media do โ€” all of America's mainstream 'news'-media being in favor of the U.S. Government's sanctioning (economic-blockading) and trying to overthrow by means of coup or sometimes outright invasion, countries (such as Iraq, Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Libya, etc.) that had never invaded, nor even threatened to invade, the United States. U.S. imperialism is commonly called "neoconservatism," but it is basically the same as other imperialistic regimes throughout history โ€” it is controlled by the given invading nation's aristocracy, which deceives in its propaganda regarding the reasons why "regime change" is supposedly needed in the targeted countries. By means of these lies, the nation's public are made willing to fund these invasions in their taxes and can even think that it is their patriotic duty, instead of being a massively criminal enterprise that they've been fooled into supporting with their dollars and sometimes with their very bodies.

Even if Tulsi Gabbard wins lawsuit against Clinton over 'Russian asset' smear, establishment Dems will stand behind Hillary

The gloves came off this week in the United States as Democratic presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard announced she would sue Hillary Clinton for suggesting she was a 'Russian asset.'

Clinton's conspiracy theory that Gabbard was in the employ of the Russians went something like this: somewhere deep behind the walls of the Kremlin, the Russians, trembling at the prospect of having to play 4D chess against the likes of old Joe Biden, came to the conclusion that Donald Trump would never emerge victorious in 2020 without a third-party candidate to play spoiler. Thus, as the story goes, the Russians began "grooming" one of the Democratic candidates for the role.

"I'm not making any predictions, but I think they [the Kremlin] have got their eye on somebody who is currently in the Democratic primary and are grooming her to be the third-party candidate," Clinton said in an interview with the Campaign HQ podcast. "She's the favorite of the Russians... They have a bunch of sites and bots and other ways of supporting her."

Disaster for Europe: Iran blasts EU for buckling to Trump & acting like 'strong man' against Tehran

Zarif
© REUTERS/Evgenia NovozheninaFILE PHOTO: Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif
Acquiescing to Washington's hardline stance on Tehran spells catastrophe for Europe, Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has argued, warning that there will be consequences for their u-turn on the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.

The decision by European signatories of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) to trigger a mechanism that could lead to UN sanctions against Iran is a "disaster" for Europe, Zarif said during an interview with Germany's Der Spiegel magazine. He claimed that, behind closed doors, European leaders have admitted that they dare not defy US President Donald Trump's unilateral decision to pull out from the accord and to implement sanctions.

The Europeans call us and say: 'We're sorry, we cannot do anything.' The Europeans can't buckle to Trump and then try to act like the strong man against Iran.
