Four shelters have been opened for flood victims in Cihuatlán.
Faced with the flooding of homes and roads due to Tropical Storm Hernán, now downgraded to a tropical depression, municipal governments of Cihuatlán and La Huerta in Jalisco and Manzanillo in Colima have installed shelters to evacuate residents at risk.

In, the municipal government opened four shelters to house evacuees, Mayor Fernando Martínez Guerrero announced, and was preparing to declare a state of emergency Friday morning as clean-up begins.

The El Pedregal arroyo in Melaque overflowed its banks, causing heavy flooding, as did the Río Purificación. A sinkhole partially closed the Santa Cruz-Melaque highway and in Emilio Zapata the Cuixmala River breached its banks leading to the closing of Highway 200 in both directions.

Violent weather hammered Mallorca on Saturday, bringing down hundreds of trees and causing blocked roads and power outages.

Giant hailstones of up to two centimetres across pelted down on areas including Bunyola, Valldemossa, Soller and Escorca mid-morning before the storm moved on to Andratx, Calvia and Palma.

Several of the island capital's beaches had to be closed due to discharges of untreated waste water.

A waterspout, or tornado forming over water, wreaked havoc in the Serra de Tramuntana mountains. The tops of trees were torn off and there were landslides, leaving roads impassable.

Fear of flood looms large in the Mahanadi river system in Odisha following heavy rainfall in its upper catchment areas in Chhatisgarh and a rise in the water level of Hirakud Dam, a senior official said.

Five more people lost their lives in rain-related incidents in the state on Friday, raising the deaths to nine, while 415,817 people in 10 districts are affected, Special Relief Commissioner (SRC), PK Jena, said.

Forty of the 64 sluice gates of the Hirakud Dam, built across the Mahanadi near Sambalpur in Odisha, were opened by the authorities on Friday to discharge excess water.

The flood in the Mahanadi river system is likely to affect coastal districts such as Puri, Khurda, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur and Nayagarh, another official said.

Many other rivers are in spate submerging low-lying areas and snapping road connectivity.

Rare waterspout filmed off Southwold coast in Suffolk, UK

waterspout
A waterspout caught the attention of tourists and residents this weekend after it was spotted moving across the sea.

The weather phenomenon was filmed by Lisa Wroe, 49, from Flint in Wales, while on holiday on the Suffolk coast.

She had been visiting Southwold when the phenomenon was caught on camera.

"I was sat near the pier and it went very dark in the distance and started thundering," Ms Wroe told the PA news agency.

"I noticed out to sea what looked like smoke on the horizon. On closer inspection I realised the sea was being churned up directly underneath this long pointed 'arrow' coming out of the sky.

There is a direct relationship between high food prices and cargo theft. With the UK having its lowest crop yields in 40 years, summer snowdrifts in Russia, the global food landscape looks well under the rosy forecasts in the beginning of 2020. Are you ready for trucks to stop arriving at your supermarkets?

Lightning bolt kills 10 children in remote Uganda town

lightning
Ten children have been killed in a lightning strike in a remote Ugandan town near the Congo border, Ugandan police said Friday.

The children, whose ages ranged from 9 to 16, were sheltering from the rain in a grass-thatched house when the lightning struck Thursday evening. They had been playing soccer in a nearby field, said Josephine Angucia, police spokeswoman in Uganda's West Nile region.

Four other children were injured, she said.

Deadly lightning is commonly reported in the East African country during the wet seasons.

In some cases, children have been struck while in their classrooms. Many classroom blocks, especially in rural areas, are not equipped with lightning diverters.

Hurricane Laura's ferocious winds produced more damage than its storm surge as it pummeled portions of Louisiana. The storm left six people dead in Louisiana, including at least four from falling trees.

Laura came ashore as a Category 4 storm early Thursday near the Texas border, tearing off roofs while knocking out power to hundreds of thousands.

Laura, later downgraded to a tropical storm, was about 35 miles south of Little Rock, Arkansas, with sustained winds of 40 mph as of 7 p.m. CT Thursday. But it made landfall around 1 a.m. with sustained winds of 150 mph, devastating southern Louisiana communities for miles.

While there were widespread reports of wind damage, some communities were also beset by storm surge. US Coast Guard aerial video showed flooding in Cameron along the coast.

"There's a lot of damage. People are going to need a lot of help around here," Paul Heard, who survived the ordeal in Lake Charles, told CNN.

Heard left his house just as the storm was pulling part of the roof off around 1 a.m., taking shelter in his car, he said. As he watched from 25 feet away, he "could see my roof was heaving up and down several inches."
