Third cat in Wyoming diagnosed with bubonic plague

A house cat in Wyoming was recently diagnosed with bubonic plague; it is now the third feline in the state found to have contracted the deadly disease in the past six months.

While the word "plague" conjures images of epidemics wiping out medieval communities in their entirety, the bacterial infection actually occurs naturally in wild rodents (and their fleas) in the western U.S. and rarely affects people, according to local health officials. Prairie dogs are common carriers of the disease.

The cat, named Kaycee, was "known to wander outdoors," representatives with the Wyoming Department of Health (WDH) said in a statement on Jan. 4. Kaycee's roaming habits likely exposed it to an animal that was already infected with the plague-causing bacterium Yersinia pestis, which is typically transmitted between animals through flea bites, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Once called "the Black Death" and "the great pestilence," plague emerged from Asia and decimated Europe during the 14th century, wiping out an estimated 33 percent to 50 percent of the population. Plague then traveled to North America and Australia in 1900, and today, plague is found on every continent except Antarctica, Live Science previously reported.

Norovirus outbreak sickens hundreds of cruise ship passengers and crew members

Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas

One of the world's biggest cruise ships, Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas, is returning to a Florida port a day early and giving passengers full refunds of their fare after 277 guests and crew members were hit with an outbreak of norovirus as it sailed to Jamaica.

Cruise line spokesman Owen Torres told The Associated Press, "We think the right thing to do is get everyone home early rather than have guests worry about their health."

He says the ship will return to Port Canaveral on Saturday. It sailed from there Sunday on a seven-day Caribbean cruise.

Passengers took to social media on Wednesday, tweeting they were forced to stay onboard after docking in Falmouth, Jamaica, for what was supposed to be a day of excursions.

Torres said returning a day early gives the cruise line "more time to completely clean and sanitize the ship" before it sails again.

Comment: From Britain to Egypt to the Americas, Norovirus and other reports of sickness due to contaminated food have been in the news a lot recently:

A massive swarm of locusts plagued Mecca, Saudi Arabia, earlier this week, prompting authorities at Islam's holiest site to launch a cleaning operation to remove them.

Videos posted to social media showed the insects swarming around cleaners and worshipers in the city's Grand Mosque, where millions of Muslim pilgrims congregate every year.

"Specialized teams have been directed to work in the fight to eliminate these insects," authorities in Mecca said, according to the Al-Araby Al-Jadeed news site.

Greenland Crater - The 12,000 year old comet that erased ancient civilization

Ancient Impact
© ScreenCapture/YouTube
NASA recently discovered of a massive, 19-mile (31km) wide crater, found hidden underneath Greenland's Hiawatha Glacier. This crater is the result of an asteroid impact, from a nearly 1 mile-wide mountain of iron, weighing somewhere around, get this, 11-12 BILLION tons, and was traveling at approximately 12 MILES per second - which is equivalent to more than 43,000 miles per hour - when it slammed into the earth some 12,000 years ago - And...with the mind-boggling force of essentially a 700-megaton bomb. And without a doubt, THIS is the reason why there is so much mystery and why we know so little about lost Ancient human civilization

Salmonella contaminated batch of roquette leaves prompts recall in France

rocket leaves
The Auchan brand has recalled several batches of rocket bags following the detection of salmonella. This infection results in gastrointestinal disturbances and fever within two days after ingestion of the contaminated products. When it is about fragile people (children, the elderly or the sick), the risk of dehydration can be particularly dangerous.

A control has highlighted Salmonella in bags of salad of the company Bonduelle Frais France, according to a statement of the Auchan group of December 21, 2018. Batches of 125 g of the brand Auchan brand (EAN: 3596710294947) with date consumption limit at 25/12/2018 and 28/12/2018 are therefore recalled.

Auchan is asking from those who bought the product to not consume it and return it to any Auchan store for the full refund.

They call her the "young miracle." A baby who was admitted to an Ebola treatment center just six days after birth has now recovered from the virus.

Congo's health ministry calls the baby the youngest survivor in what is now the world's second-deadliest Ebola outbreak.

The ministry late Thursday tweeted a photo of the infant, swaddled and with tiny mouth open in yawn or squall, surrounded by caregivers who watched over her 24 hours a day for weeks.

The baby's mother, who had Ebola, died in childbirth, the ministry said.

The infant was discharged from the treatment center in Beni on Wednesday. "She went home in the arms of her father and her aunt," the ministry said.

Earth's magnetic field may be headed for a cataclysm says latest French study

Earth's Magnetic Field
© NASA Goddard – CC BY 2.0
We've reported on Earth's magnetic field before, including studies claiming that the planet's poles may reverse at any time and studies saying that Earth is probably not headed for a polar reversal at all. At the heart of these studies is the undeniable, millennia-old weakening trend in the planet's magnetic field, which, depending on your point of view, is either a temporary phenomenon that will eventually reverse itself (as it has in the past), or the harbinger of a cataclysmic breakdown of the Earth's entire magnetic shield and a subsequent flip of the magnetic poles.

The most recent study from the EDIFICE project, a geophysical research initiative based in France, claims we're headed for a cataclysm. According to Dr. Nicolas Thouveny, one of the principal investigators for EDIFICE: "The geomagnetic field has been decaying for the last 3,000 years. If it continues to fall down at this rate, in less than one millennium we will be in a critical (period)."

Woman dies from brain-eating amoeba after using Neti pot with filtered tap water in Seattle, US

neti pot
A woman used filtered tap water in a Neti pot rather than saline, which doctors think led to her death.
A Seattle woman died from a brain-eating amoeba after she ran tap water through her Neti pot, according to a recent report.

The woman, 69, saw a specialist for a recurring sinus infection and was told to try running saline through her sinuses. But instead of using sterilized water or saline, she used tap water that had been filtered with a Brita purifier.

Doctors say that is likely how she contracted a Balamuthia mandrillaris, an amoeba found in soil and fresh water that can cause an infection of the central nervous system. Nasal irrigation, where someone tries to flush their nasal cavity to rid it of mucus and other things, has been linked to the contraction of another potentially fatal amoeba, which led doctors to make the connection.

Both are extremely rare, but the report, published in the International Journal of Infectious Diseases, said that it could happen to others.

Comment: Worryingly, cases of brain-eating amoeba seem to be in the news more often these days:

Did unknown strain of plague discovered in 5000 year old tomb wipe out Europe's stone age civilization?

© Karl-Göran Sjögren/University of GothenburgA young woman who died of an early form of plague was buried in this Neolithic grave in Sweden.
Nearly 5000 years ago, a 20-year-old woman was buried in a tomb in Sweden, one of Europe's early farmers dead in her prime. Now, researchers have discovered what killed her-Yersinia pestis, the bacterium that causes plague. The sample is one of the oldest ever found, and it belongs to a previously unknown branch of the Y. pestis evolutionary tree. This newly discovered strain of plague could have caused the collapse of large Stone Age settlements across Europe in what might be the world's first pandemic, researchers on the project say. But other scientists contend there isn't yet enough evidence to prove the case.

"Plague is starting to seem like it's everywhere," says Kyle Harper, a historian at the University of Oklahoma in Norman who studies how the disease affected human societies. Ancient plague genomes, such as the one in the new study, show "we have a really long history with this germ," he says.

Until now, the oldest known strain of plague came to Europe with the Yamnaya, herders from the central Eurasian steppe who swept into the continent some 4800 years ago. That was followed, several thousand years later, by the strain that led to both the Justinian Plague, which afflicted the Roman Empire in the sixth century C.E., and the Black Death, which killed half of Europe's population in the 1300s.

Comment: The evidence shows that plague along with changes to weather patterns, increased seismic and volcanic activity, and cometary bombardment, are part of a collection of disasters that relatively regularly visit our planet: And for more on the events that accompany plague, check out SOTT radio's: Behind the Headlines: Who was Jesus?
