Federal authorities on Friday added seven yellow-faced bee species, Hawaii's only native bees, for protection under the Endangered Species Act, a first for any bees in the United States.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced the listing after years of study by the conservation group Xerces Society, state government officials and independent researchers. The Xerces Society says its goal is to protect nature's pollinators and invertebrates, which play a vital role in the health of the overall ecosystem.

The nonprofit organization was involved in the initial petitions to protect the bee species, said Sarina Jepson, director of endangered species and aquatic programs for the Portland, Oregon-based group.

Jepson said yellow-faced bees can be found elsewhere in the world, but these particular species are native only to Hawaii and pollinate plant species indigenous to the islands.

The bees face a variety of threats including "feral pigs, invasive ants, loss of native habitat due to invasive plants, fire, as well as development, especially in some for the coastal areas," Jepson told The Associated Press.

A vengeful deer attempted to enter a New Jersey woman's SUV after she struck the deer with the vehicle. The woman suffered a minor knee injury while kicking the deer away and police said the deer died due to injuries sustained in the crash.
A township woman who struck a deer while driving earlier this month had to kick the antlered buck to prevent it from jumping into her SUV after she pulled over on a Monmouth County road.

The woman's bizarre encounter with the deer was caught on a Howell police officer's dash camera.

Howell police Patrolman Nicholas Austin was driving on Oak Glen Road around 8 p.m. on Sept. 17 when he saw a deer cross the road several hundred feet in front of him, Detective Sgt. Christian Antunez, a spokesman for the Howell Township Police Department, said in a statement.

Not sure if a 2008 GMC Envoy driving in front of him struck the deer, Austin pulled over behind the vehicle to assist the driver, Ellen Sager.

As Austin pulled up, he witnessed the same deer run back across the road and try to enter the SUV after Sager opened the driver's side door.

A two-headed Texas rat snake has joined Cameron Park Zoo's collection, officials announced this week.

A McLennan County resident discovered the 8-inch-long rat snake at her home within the past two weeks when her dog started chasing something under her front porch, said Brian Henley, an amphibian and reptile care supervisor at the zoo. After looking for what her dog was after, the woman saw the two-headed creature and called the zoo.

"Her dog found it, and it was probably just recently hatched. It's probably only about 6 to 8 weeks old now," Henley said. "She brought it in, and we were really surprised by it, because as long as I've been here, we've never had a two-headed animal at this zoo. This is pretty exciting for us."

Cameron Park Zoo unveiled the new addition to great fanfare this week with social media posts, spokeswoman Duane McGregor said. The zoo plans to determine the sex of the snake and host a naming contest on social media, presumably for two names, McGregor said.

Katla volcano continues to tremble in Iceland with over 200 tremors in 24 hours

Seismic activity in Katla volcano, South Iceland, continues. No less than 200 tremors have registered there in the past 24 hours, Vísir reports. Three quakes in excess of magnitude 3 hit the volcano overnight, the largest one at 4:41 am, of magnitude 3.7. It was preceded by another one of magnitude 3.1 a minute earlier. The third one measured 3.2 at 2:43 am. All three were shallow. Sigurdís Björg Jónasdóttir, natural hazard specialist at the Icelandic Met Office, reported that the seismic activity was constant all night long.

"It's been very lively in Katla overnight, but the tremors are all shallow, and there hasn't been any eruption activity or glacial outburst flood activity, so those of us who are on call are relatively calm, since the situation effectively hasn't changed since yesterday," Sigurdís stated.

Katla volcano is located under the icecap of Mýrdalsjökull glacier. It last erupted in 1918, but has, on average, erupted twice a century.
