Unleash the horde! Watch thousands of deer block Siberian road during migration

Deer
Screen grab from a Yamal-Region TV video
Indigenous deer herders in Siberia caused a rare congestion on a road when they had thousands of their animals cross it for about 20 minutes. Amused drivers seized the chance to film the unexpected procession.

The footage, obtained by RT's Ruptly was taken by a local journalist, who was returning from a fishing trip. It shows a huge herd of deer running by as the reporter sits stuck in his car. So many animals were passing by that the clip had to be sped up considerably to show them all in under three minutes.

A football game between two elite Ivy League universities froze for about an hour as a crowd of students and alumni staged a protest against investment in fossil fuels right on the playing field - and sparked an online outrage.

It was after the second quarter of the game at the Yale Bowl, New Haven, Connecticut, when scores of protesters from both colleges stormed the field, carrying banners and placards that accused the two prestigious universities of being "complicit in climate injustice" by investing in fossil fuel companies.

Missing Navy veteran found inside his own home had been dead for 3 years

Ronald Wayne White
Ronald Wayne White is seen in this undated family photo.
A Navy veteran found dead inside his apartment had been deceased for three years, and the case has left his grief-stricken family searching for answers as to how exactly this could have gone unnoticed for such a long period of time after they repeatedly reported his absence to the authorities.

Ronald Wayne White, who would have been 51 at the time of his death in 2016, worked as a defense contractor and traveled around the world for work. His body was found last week when the DeSoto Town Center Apartment complex were investigating multiple units of where tenants had not been using water. But when they forced the bolted door open to White's apartment during their investigations, they found him dead on the kitchen floor. The medical examiner estimated that he had been dead for three years, according to ABC News' Dallas affiliate WFAA.

"When the medical examiner told me three years, my knees gave away. Three years? And that's what I can't get past in my brain. I can't get past three years," his mother Doris Stevens said. "My biggest question is, how in the world could my son have been dead in that apartment and nobody knows anything?"

Stevens, who lives in Long Island, New York, said that her son had been in touch with her on a regular basis.

A Grieving son thanks Jordan Peterson in response to twitter attacks

The Rise of Jordan Peterson
I've struggled with anxiety my entire life, along with intermittent bouts of depression. One evening, when life had rendered me completely shell shocked, I asked my mom that age-old question: "What's the meaning of life?" My mom answered quickly, with a five-word response that was both simple and powerful: "how you treat other people."

This answer reminded me of a story Jordan Peterson told to his Beacon Theater audience. Peterson discussed the extremely dark places people can retreat to when they leave their suffering unchecked. However, many admirable people out in the world choose compassion over bitterness.

Peterson continues, sharing his experience with an outpatient he counseled at the Douglas Hospital in Montreal. The woman suffered mightily from a living environment tangled up in severe social anxiety, schizophrenia, alcoholism, and unemployment.

Israel cuts Palestinian farmers' access to their land behind separation wall with yearly quotas

Palestinian farmers, whose land ended up on the wrong side of Israel's West Bank separation wall, have had their access further restricted with yearly quotas. Those affected see it as part of a creeping theft of their property.

In the early 2000s, Israel began the construction of a long barrier between itself and the West Bank, saying it was a necessary temporary measure in response to the Second Intifada. Two decades on, the wall is still in place, and its impact on the life of Palestinian civilians is increasingly harsh.

Large sections of the separation wall have been built across land seized from Palestinian farmers, trapping some of their lots on the Israeli side. The owners now have to receive permits from Israel's Civil Administration in the West Bank to gain access to tend to the land. The rules on what kind of access can be granted have been recently tightened, the newspaper Haaretz reported.

The changes include a limit on how many times a farmer can travel through a wall checkpoint each year, depending on the type of produce he grows on his land. The quota is 40 times a year for olives, 50 times for figs, 30 for barley, and 220 for tomatoes or strawberries.

'Better red than dead': Lavrov remembers Soviet diplomat who turned cold-war slogan into UN meme

Sunday marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Oleg Troyanovsky, a sharp-witted diplomat who famously was painted red by Chinese protesters, only to snidely remark in response that it was better to be 'red than dead.'

Troyanovsky, the son of the Soviet Union's first ambassador to the US, picked his father's profession and represented his home country in several senior diplomatic positions. He served as the Soviet ambassador to Japan and China, as well as the envoy to the UN, a role that he held for a decade, starting in 1976.

The current Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov took the same role eight years after Troyanovsky left. Lavrov said he was lucky to work under his predecessor at the UN and recalled an anecdote from that time which showcases his sense of humor.

The Magadan region and nearby territories are the champions of Russia’s gold-mining industry. Last year some 37 tons of the yellow metal were extracted from local deposits.
Russian gold miners in the Far Eastern region of Magadan have extracted more gold than some countries' entire bullion reserves. They've mined over 40 tons of the precious metal since the beginning of 2019.

While there is still time before the end of the year, the figure can exceed 50 tons, the authorities of the rich gold-mining region said on Tuesday.

As of November 1, the gold miners had unearthed 40.23 tons of the commodity, a record amount in 40 years and seven tons more than at the same period last year. At the same time, nearly 560 tons of silver were mined in Magadan.

Students at Washington and Lee University want portraits of college namesakes removed from diplomas

george washington and robert e lee
Law students at Washington and Lee University are circulating a petition asking for the option to have portraits of the school's namesakes — George Washington and Robert E. Lee — removed from diplomas, so alumni can be "proud to prominently display" their sheepskin without the images that "some may find controversial or offensive."

What are the details?

The petition is not asking for a mandatory removal of the portraits, but requests that students be allowed to opt out. It argues, "Given the aftermath of the 2017 Unite the Right Rally in Charlottesville and the heightened awareness of making Washington & Lee an inclusive and compassionate environment to all students, we believe this request provides alumni the ability to honor their alma mater without the presence of the portraits that some may find controversial or offensive."

Hundreds of past and future graduates have signed the petition endorsed by several student groups and addressed to the school's administration and president. Some faculty members have also signed on.

Comment: What hypocrites! If these students with such high morals find the school namesakes so offensive, why have they elected to attend the university and partake of the generous endowment?

Pakistani govt. says all is fine while smog and pollution make Lahore look like 'the apocalypse'

smog pollution lahore
Pakistan may have a very different way of looking at air quality than the rest of the world—it revised its air quality standards to say levels that the rest of the world considers dangerous are just moderate—but that doesn’t mean Pakistani lungs can survive this.
All schools in Lahore will be closed tomorrow (Friday) because of "dense smog".

This includes both private and public schools. Schools in Gujranwala and Faisalabad will also remain shut.

The Punjab School Education Department has issued the notification for the closure and blamed it on the smog.

Air quality levels across the city are rising every day. People are filing petitions in the Lahore High Court and organising protests but the government says everything is fine. Pakistan may have a very different way of looking at air quality than the rest of the world — it revised its air quality standards to say levels that the rest of the world considers dangerous are just moderate — but that doesn't mean Pakistani lungs can survive this.

AirVisual.com and aqicn.org, two websites that measure air quality, have both declared that the air in Lahore is very unhealthy.

According to Pakistan's revised air quality standards, an index of 200-300 is 'moderately polluted', while the rest of the world considers this 'very unhealthy'.
