Best of the Web: Western cancel culture has gone nuclear in targeting an entire country

The West doesn't seem to have considered the campaign's collateral damage, or how persecution could be expected to promote peace

By now, we're all used to righteous people pitching fits and ganging up, mean-girl style, on those they feel have committed transgressions against the status quo. But amid the conflict in Ukraine, some are actually trying to deplatform the world's largest country by attacking anyone and anything even remotely associated with it.

Back in 2003, in the run-up to the Iraq War, when I was working in Washington, DC as the director of a think tank associated with the George W. Bush administration, I recall the moment when "French fries" were suddenly renamed "freedom fries" in the Congressional cafeteria. It was an attempt by the Republicans to stick it to the French, who had opposed the invasion of Iraq.

French products were also subsequently boycotted over Paris' refusal to support the US invasion, but such measures are almost quaint and sensible compared to the utter hysterical lunacy that's transpiring today, as Russia and NATO member countries face off over Ukraine.

Russia lashes out at 'illegal' Beijing Paralympics ban

In a stunning reversal, Russian and Belarusian athletes have been banned from the Winter Paralympic Games for their countries' roles in the war in Ukraine, the International Paralympic Committee said Thursday in Beijing.

The about-face comes less than 24 hours after the IPC on Wednesday announced it would allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete when the Games open on Friday, but only as neutral athletes with colors, flags and other national symbols removed.

The IPC received immediate criticism for its initial decision. It was termed a betrayal that sent the wrong message to Russia's leadership. The IPC also said it was evident that many athletes would refuse to compete against Russians or Belarusians, creating chaos for the Paralympics and damaging the reputation.

Comment: The pile on has begun as other sports organizations join the exodus, letting politics and perceptions guide their decisions:
The ban on Russian and Belarusian athletes from the Beijing 2022 Winter Paralympics is "illegal" and violates the principle of separating sport from politics, Russian officials have said.

IPC President Andrew Parsons:
"At the IPC we are very firm believers that sport and politics should not mix. However, by no fault of its own the war [in Ukraine] has now come to these Games and behind the scenes many governments are having an influence on our cherished event."
In a strongly-worded statement, the RPC said the organization and Russian athletes were being seen as culprits, when in reality they have done
"nothing that could in any way be interpreted as participating in the current political complications. On the contrary, in full accordance with the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), the RPC removed from its governing bodies any persons who had any relation to political structures.

"In this regard, the RPC considers the decision of the IPC illegal and reserves the right to defend the rights and interests of Russian Paralympic athletes in sports and other judicial instances.

"Of course, the RPC will continue to work on the development of domestic physical culture and sports among people with disabilities and the creation of all necessary conditions for this."
Reacting to the Paralympic ban, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called it
"horrible. This is a shame for the International Paralympic Committee. I can't say otherwise. Yesterday, one decision was made, today this decision was changed, so, of course, we strongly condemn the International Paralympic Committee."
Russian State Duma Deputy Boris Paykin, who is a member of the Committee on Physical Culture and Sport, said the country could organize its own event for Paralympic athletes.
"These days we are no longer surprised that politics has taken over sport and its most important principles. But the decision of the International Paralympic Committee, which only yesterday announced that Russians and Belarusians will be able to take part in the Beijing Games, but today in a cowardly way and under obvious pressure, is changing its position - this is the height of cynicism and double standards.

"Our Paralympic athletes are people of special courage, they have enough inner strength not only to overcome illnesses, but also to realize their potential in the sports arena... I think that for Belarusian and Russian athletes we should organize a sports festival here, in Russia."

But wait...there's more:
Video game giant EA Sports has removed Russian teams from its popular FIFA video game series, the company has confirmed.

Football governing bodies FIFA and UEFA are among the organizations to follow the IOC's calls, and Russia's sporting exclusion has now been extended to video games.

"EA Sports has initiated processes to remove the Russian national team and all Russian clubs from EA Sports FIFA products including: FIFA 22, FIFA Mobile and FIFA Online. We're also actively evaluating related changes to other areas of our games. We will keep our communities up to date on any actions taken, and thank players for their patience as we work through these updates."

Formula 1 falls in line:
Days after it was revealed that this season's Sochi Grand Prix was to be shelved following Russia's conflict in Ukraine, Formula 1 chiefs have announced that they have terminated their contract in Russia after determining that racing in the country is no longer viable.

The Russian Grand Prix was due to move to St. Petersburg in 2023, with this no longer happening despite it reportedly being one of the most financially lucrative races on the F1 annual calendar.

Russian President Vladimir Putin was key in establishing the race in 2014 in Sochi after the Winter Olympic Games were held in the region, but the decision means that F1 will now leave Russia for an indeterminate period.

The decision comes shortly after the FIA announced that it would continue to allow Russian drivers to compete in global motorsports, and represents a rare difference of opinion between Formula 1 and its governing body. Russian drivers such as Haas' Nikita Mazepin will be forced to race under a neutral flag.

It also comes days after the UK's national motorsport authority announced a ban on all Russian drivers.

However, this week the IOC - to which the FIA has official links - introduced a wave of new measures to punish Russian and Belarusian athletes, saying on Tuesday that
"event organizers not invite or allow the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials in international competitions... in order to protect the integrity of global sports competitions and for the safety of all participants."
Olympic champion cites 'gross hypocrisy' of sports federations:

The sweeping sanctions being placed on Russian athletes amounts to the "most disgraceful page in the history of world sports," former rhythmic gymnastics Olympic champion Alina Kabaeva has said.

Governing sports federations from football to canoeing have since heeded that call by either suspending athletes from the two countries altogether or insisting that they compete as neutrals.

Former Olympic rhythmic gymnastics all-around gold medalist Kabaeva described the situation as shameful, as she hit out at the measures and questioned why Russians were being punished for a military conflict when athletes from other nations had escaped anything similar in past years. The nine-time world champion told TASS;
"I believe there has never been a more disgraceful page in the history of world sports. The leadership of many international sports organizations has long been engaged in completely unsportsmanlike affairs under various pretexts. Now it is no longer hidden."

Home rental company Airbnb Inc on Thursday became the latest big global firm to halt operations in Russia as Western sanctions build against Moscow for invading Ukraine.

Chief Executive Officer Brian Chesky tweeted the suspension, which also includes Russian ally Belarus. It aligns his company with other major Western names including General Motors Co , Boeing Co and Alphabet Inc's Google.

"People are booking Airbnbs in Ukraine they don't intend to stay in just to help Hosts," Chesky added, noting a way some outsiders have found to send financial support to Ukrainians.

UK supermarket chain Sainsbury's is renaming its 'Chicken Kiev' products 'Chicken Kyiv,' to reflect Ukrainian spelling, and is also removing 'Russian Standard' vodka and Russian sunflower seeds from its shelves.

In a statement to UK media, Britain's second largest supermarket chain said that it stands "united with the people of Ukraine" and would donate £2 million ($2.64mn) to help those affected by the humanitarian crisis there. Sainsbury's didn't limit its support to donations, however, and also conducted a review of its product range.
"We have decided to remove from sale all products that are 100% sourced from Russia. This means that from [Friday] we will no longer sell two products - Russian Standard vodka and Karpayskiye black sunflower seeds. We are also re-naming 'Chicken Kiev' to 'Chicken Kyiv' and the new packaging will be available in the coming weeks." Russian: 'Kiev' to Ukrainian: 'Kyiv'
Another popular supermarket chain, Waitrose, told Metro.co.uk that it would not be renaming Chicken Kiev, which it also sells.

© ABC WashingtonA long line of trucks preparing to make its way into the D.C. region to protest mask and vaccine mandates was spotted in Hagerstown, Maryland.
A group of demonstrators similar to the Canadian truckers protesting COVID-19 protocols plans to keep "annoying" the Washington, D.C. area, but the group's exact plans appear fluid, The Washington Post reported.

The U.S.-based group, called the "People's Convoy" convened at the Hagerstown Speedway in Maryland on Friday, with roughly 1,000 cars in attendance, according to the newspaper.

The group said in a media statement last week that it is trekking across the country and demonstrating for "end the State of Emergency that led to overreaching mandates," referring to itself as "a peaceful and unified transcontinental movement."

New study finds Wuhan market likely origin source of COVID-19

Huanan Market in Wuhan.
© APTwo new studies have concluded that the Huanan Market in Wuhan that sold live animals is likely where the COVID-19 pandemic originated.
A market in Wuhan, China, that sold live animals likely was the point of origin for the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a pair of studies released Saturday.
"When you look at all of the evidence together, it's an extraordinarily clear picture that the pandemic started at the Huanan market," said Michael Worobey, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Arizona who co-authored both studies, told the New York Times.
The studies have yet to be published in a scientific journal.

Researchers analyzed data from a variety of sources to seek clues to how the pandemic began. They concluded it was present in live mammals sold at the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market in late 2019.
"The most probable explanation for the introduction of SARS-CoV-2 into humans involves zoonotic jumps from an as-yet-undetermined, intermediate host animal at the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market," says one study.

Comment: If we consider all the information available , it is obvious that this text is pure propaganda to try to deflect the focus about the real virus origin from the real source to China.

US never stopped their biological warfare program and after the WW2 their biggest biolab was in Fort Detrick. All the data suggest the virus is man made in the US biggest biolab in Fort Detrick. In many occasions Chinese officials pointed that the US Army is responsible for the outbreak.

A lot of U.S. government funding has gone to the WIV over time, and how much of that supported gain-of-function research? According to Chinese experts no one has found the bat population that was the source of SARS2, if indeed it ever infected bats.

The US is the only country that has the "tree trunk" of all the varieties of the virus. And it may therefore be true that the original source of the COVID-19 virus was the US military bio-warfare lab at Fort Detrick.

In August 2019 CDC suddenly completely shut down Fort Detrick. Earlier, between 2005 and 2012 the US had experienced 1,059 events where pathogens had been either stolen or escaped from American bio-labs during the prior ten years.

Russia reacts to US senator's Putin assassination plea

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham pleaded on Thursday for "somebody in Russia" to "step up to the plate" and assassinate President Vladimir Putin, and who would thus do the country and the world "a great service."

The Russian ambassador to Washington has rebuked the remarks, calling them "unacceptable and outrageous."

The South Carolina senator advocated assassinating Putin during an appearance on Fox News, and cited historic examples of plots to kill famous political leaders, including Julius Caesar and Adolf Hitler.
Graham inquired:
"Is there a Brutus in Russia? Is there a more successful Colonel Stauffenberg in the Russian military? The only way this ... ends, my friend, is for somebody in Russia to take this guy out."

Comment: It is clear unhinged members of the US government have a drum to beat and an outcome to orchestrate - the opposite of governance.
US Senator Lindsey Graham has been driven crazy by the ongoing tensions between Moscow and the West, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov implied, following calls from the politician for the assassination of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"Not everyone can remain cool-headed these days, some [people] lose their senses," Peskov told a press conference, commenting on Graham's statements.

Peskov pointed to the "hysterical stirring-up" of anti-Russian sentiment in the US, calling it a "Russophobic meltdown" of sorts. Moscow has demanded an official explanation from the US over what it called de-facto advocating an act of terrorism.

Moscow maintains its military offensive in Ukraine is a "special operation" aimed at the "demilitarization" and "denazification" of the nation in the name of protecting the people of the two Donbass republics Russia has recently recognized.
Johnson, at least, suggested a trial first:
Britain's prime minister does not support the idea of trying to kill Russian President Vladimir Putin, a spokesperson for Boris Johnson said on Friday. Asked by reporters whether he agrees with US Senator Lindsey Graham, the spokesperson firmly rejected the idea:
"No. We stand with the Ukrainian people in demanding the immediate end to the Russian invasion. We have said before that Putin must be held to account before an international court for the horrific acts he has committed."
The open call for the assassination of the Russian president provoked fury in Moscow, with Russia's Embassy in the US strongly condemning such statements, as well as demanding Washington to hold the official accountable for his remarks. Russia's Ambassador in the US Anatoly Antonov said:
"The degree of Russophobia and hatred towards Russia is going through the roof in the United States. It is unbelievable that a senator from a country that preaches its moral values as a 'guiding light' for all of mankind could allow himself call for terrorism as a means to achieve Washington's goals on the international stage."

Reckless neocons want escalation with Russia in order to regain control of the GOP

F-22 raptor
© USAFF-22 Raptor
When you heard neocons calling for no-fly zones in Ukraine, know that part of their motivation is to regain relevance in their own party.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has brought Republican neocons out of the woodwork, agitating for escalation and U.S. military involvement. The same people who brought us the Iraq War and a 20-year occupation of Afghanistan that ended last year in an ignominious and chaotic U.S. withdrawal would now like us to go to war with Russia, a nuclear power, over Ukraine.

Why? Partly because they're reacting emotionally to the war, which is understandable up to a point. But mostly they would like to leverage a military conflict with Russia to regain control of the Republican Party, whose voters have become deeply disillusioned with foreign interventions — and with the neocons who peddled them to the American people.

Florida surgeon general on masks: It's a 'lie' they save lives, calls doctors who disagree 'zombies'

Florida Surgeon Gen. Dr. Joseph A. Ladapo
© Associated PressFlorida Surgeon Gen. Dr. Joseph A. Ladapo looks on before a bill signing by Gov. Ron DeSantis in Brandon, Fla.
Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo called the idea that masks saved any lives during the covid-19 pandemic "a lie, and it needs to stop and people need to unbelieve it."

Ladapo, who runs the state Department of Health, also said the vast majority of the medical community that supports masks are "zombies."

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Mayo Clinic and numerous studies all have found that masks are effective in limiting transmission of the virus. Highly protective KN95 and N95 masks are now recommended by the CDC against the more infectious omicron variant.

Comment: DeSantis answers his critics:
