Loud house-shaking boom heard in northwestern Washington

A sonic boom from a plane? A stick of dynamite? Somebody blowing up old tree stumps? Something at the refinery? Blasting for a new logging road? Mount Baker getting ready to erupt? How about a UFO?

Plenty of theories were floated on social media Monday night and Tuesday morning about the cause of a large boom that was heard from Everson to Bellingham and west to Blaine around 7 p.m. Monday. According to reports, the boom shook houses, though no reports of damage were mentioned.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the only thing known for sure was that it was loud. The cause is still a mystery.

Southeast Michigan residents report hearing loud house-rattling 'boom'

Some people in Southeast Michigan have reported hearing a loud "boom" that they say sounded, and felt, like an explosion.

People living in and near Bedford Township tell 13abc they heard the loud noise just before 8:30 Sunday evening.

Some viewers say they believe it happened on Erie Road between Crabb and Minx.

A 13abc crew drove to the area and found a Monroe County Deputy patrolling the road.

That deputy told 13abc he was called to check out the sound, but hadn't found anything suspicious.

The law enforcement officer did say, however, that he felt his cruiser shake around the same time that noise was reported.

A bright meteor described as "bright and beautiful" streaked across the sky over New Jersey on Thursday.

"I was driving Route 206 North just south of the Somerville Circle just before 9 p.m., and I saw something streak across the sky, with a pretty bright ball with a long tail. Then it just went dark," Lorna Morehead of Bridgewater told New Jersey 101.5.

Reports to the meteor reporting website amsmeteors.org came from New Jersey and neighboring Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New York. In New Jersey, reports came from Keyport, Greenwich, Scotch Plains, Montclair, Lebanon, Manasquan, Rockaway, Franklin Lakes, and Springfield Township in Union County.

YouTube user 'Meteors' reported a bright meteor over Spain on April 16, 2018. It may have been produced by a fragment from an asteroid that hit the atmosphere at about 100.000 km/h. The event begun at an altitude of about 100 km and ended at a height of around 55 km. It was recorded in the framework of the SMART Project (University of Huelva) from the meteor-observing stations located at the astronomical observatories of Calar Alto (Almería), La Sagra (Granada), La Hita (Toledo) and Sevilla.

Dozens of people took to social media to express their shock at hearing a loud bang across Merseyside this morning.

The huge boom was heard as far and wide as Bootle and Wirral, with some New Brighton residents saying their homes shook.

One woman described how her neighbours had all peered out of their windows and left their houses to check for the source of the noise.

She said when she heard and felt the bang, she thought a car had driven into her home.

We dodged a bullet today. It came within one half of the distance to the moon.

I got this notice in email from NASA about a surprise asteroid that gave us only one day of warning passing halfway between the Earth and the moon. It was the largest known asteroid to ever pass that close to Earth in observational history.

SURPRISE ASTEROID FLYBY: With little warning, on Sunday, April 15th, a "Tunguska-class" asteroid about the size of a football field flew through the Earth-Moon system. 2018 GE3 was discovered just the day before as it plunged inward from the asteroid belt. A quick-thinking amateur astronomer in Europe was able to record a video of the asteroid as it flew by.

Comment: Whew! That was a close one! Is this a 'shot across the bow' from Mother Nature? Perhaps next time, or in the future, we won't be so lucky. Here's a few recent near misses:

Loud house-shaking boom in central Texas attributed to 2lbs of tannerite

Some Rogers residents said their homes were shaken and so were their nerves Thursday night after a loud boom happened sometime after 8:30 p.m.

Robyn Skrhak took to Facebook to ask her neighbors if they knew what happened. Some people said they heard it, while others said they felt it.

Skrhak thought something hit her house, she said.

Bell County Sheriff's Department Maj. T.J. Cruz said deputies were sent at about 8:44 p.m. to the area of an apartment complex on Rogers Cemetery Road for an explosion and possible grass fire.

Comment: We doubt that two pounds of tannerite could cause a boom that would shake homes. A close-range blast shown below didn't even shake the video recorder:

A bright green meteor fireball was observed and captured on camera as it streaked over Central Europe (Austria, S Germany, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia) at 18:49 UTC (20:49 CET) on April 8, 2018. The American Meteor Society (AMS) received 50 reports of the event (1336-2018) including numerous ones citing sonic booms and fragmentation.

According to Siol.net the event lasted about five seconds and was at least as bright as the moon. Meteorites may be possible.
